Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 20,376, dated May 25, 1858; Reissued June 27, 1865, No. 2,016.

To all whom it may concern.'

Be it known t-hat I, AUSTIN S. SMITH, of Lawrence in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Article of Manufactu1e--viz., a Combined Rocking-Chair and Cradle; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a side view of my improvement when used as a chair. Fig. Q, is a plan or top view of ditto. Fig. 3, is a section of the lower portion of one of the legs of ditto. Fig. 4 is a detached plan of the rockers with a section of the legs of the chair attached showing the relative position of the rockers with the body of the chair when the device is used as a cradle.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

This invention consists in a novel way of attaching the rockers to the legs of the chair, and using in connection with said mode of attachment an adjustable back and foot rest, the rockers being provided with rollers.l and the whole arranged as hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby an ordinary rocking and invalid chair is obtained capable of being converted by simple adjustment of parts, into a cradle.

To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it. y

To construct this invention an ordinary rocking chair A, may be used, its back B, sawed otf near the seat C, and also detached from the arms D, the side pieces a, a, of the back connected by a proper joint o, to the back part of the seat C. To the front part of the seat C, and at each side a bar E, is attached, and between the lower parts of said bars a foot rest F, is secured, said footrest being merely a fiat board or plate provided with a tenon c, at each end which fits in the bars E, the foot rest being provided at each end with a stop c. The upper ends of the bars E, arevconnected by pivots or bolts cl, to the outer or front ends of levers G, and the opposite ends of these levers are pivoted to the back B, at e.

From the above description it will be seen that by moving the back B, the bars E, E, and foot rest F, will also be moved, the foot rest rising as the back is thrown back and falling as the back is moved forward. The back and foot rest may be secured at any desired point by means of pins f, which pass through the levers G, into either of a series of holes g, made in braces z, of the arms D.

II, H, represent the rockers which are not directly attached to the legs ax, as usual. The rockers being secured by pins z', in sockets j, which are allowed to turn freely on the legs like swivels, see Fig. 3. The sockets may be constructed of bent plates provided with shanks to tit in the legs and turn therein similar to caster shanks. They may be arranged however in any proper way. To the back part of each rocker H, two rollers 71:, 7c, are attached, the edges of the rollers projecting a short distance below the rockers, see Fig. l.

From the above description of parts it will be seen that the back B, and foot rest F, may be adjusted as may be required, the back being more or less inclined and the foot rest correspondingly raised and lowered, and in case an invalid is occupying the chair and desires to be conveyed from one place to another the chair may be tilted back and rolled on the rollers 7c, la. By turning back the back B, the foot rest rising and occupying the position shown in red, Fig. l, a body or receptacle will be formed for a cradle, and by detaching the front part of one socket from its socket and the back part of the other from its socket and turning said rockers and securing the detached end of each in the socket which formerly held its fellow, the rockers will have a transverse position relatively with the back B, as shown in black Fig. 4, but more particularly in red Fig. 2, and a cradle will be obtained. The chair is exceedingly simple and any rocking chair may be at a small expense converted into the combined adjustable rocking and invalid chair and cradle.

I do not claim separately the adjustable back, nor the adjustable foot rest, for they have been used and arranged-in Various Ways; but,
