"- PETERS, PHOTQLITHOGHAPHER. WASHING UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. PHILLIPI, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUNG-WRENCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 203,496, dated May 7, 1878; application filed March 15, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
for operating the same; and I do hereby de-- clare that the following description of my said invention, taken in connection with the accolnpanying sheet of drawings, forms a full, clear, and exact specification, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has special reference to wrenches for operating and extracting barrelbungs and it consists in the peculiar arrangement of parts and details of construction, as hereinafter first fully set forth and described, and then pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereinbefore mentioned, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved bung-wrench. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sec- .tional elevationin line X X of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan of the same. 7
I Like letters of reference indicate corresponding partsdn all the figures.
A is the bung patented by Geo. H. Phillippi, assignor, &c., on the 28th day of August, 1877, No. 194,721. It does not differ from that in operation, but varies somewhat in the details of construction, the screw-bolt D having a circular head, E, provided with indentations F, by means of which said bolt is turned with a wrench, consisting of two jaws, G G, pivoted together on their upper end, and spread apart by a spring, H, interposed between said jaws. The upper extremities of these jaws are provided with a bail or handle, J, and their lower end is formed into a socket, I, Fig. 3, having'projections K fitting the indentations F on the bolt-head E. The jaws G are made parallel sidewise, and tapering on the opposite sides, and upon them is placed a handle-socket, L. This handle-socket slides upon the jaws, and, on account of its being made to fit the jaws on the smaller end, draws said jaws together when slid toward the socket I.
The notches or indents F in the bolt-head E, of which there may be any desired even number, do not extend over the entire edge of To apply my wrench andinsert the bung into a cask, the wrench is first placed over the head E, and then the handle-socket L pushed toward the socket I. This will draw the jaws together to tightly embrace said head, when the bung is put into the bung-hole and the wrench turned by the bail J or handles M to expand the rubber O. l The socket'handle, be-
ing now moved toward the bail J, will allow the jaws to open by the action of the spring H, when the wrench can easily be removed.
To withdraw a bung from a cask, the handle or wrench is affixed to the bolt-head E in pre-' cisely the same manner as that heretofore described, and the bolt D inturned sufficiently to allow the rubber O to contract, when it can be readily pulled out of the bung-hole by the bail J of said wrench. j
I do not claim the peculiar construction of the bung illustrated in the drawings, nor the bolt D, such being the subject of. a separate patent; but
What I do claim, and desire to secure to me by Letters Patent of the United States, is
The bung-wrench hereinbefore described, consisting, essentially, of the two tapering pivoted jaws G G, having the cylindrical socket I, provided with projections K on one extremity, and the bail J on the other end, and the sliding handle-socket L, said socket I being adapted to fit the notched head of the bolt D, for unscrewing and extracting the same, substantially in the manner as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have hereto set my hand and affixed my seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
o. w. PHILLIPI. [L. s.]
