Description

Feb. 11, 1936. L. H. DYER 2,030,366
HAND 'BAGGAGE Filed June 27, 1954 IN VEN TOR.
Patented Feb. 11, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Application June 27,
1 Claim.
This invention relates to hand baggage, bags or the like, having a body, with an opening, and a pair of handles, one on each side of the opening.
Hand baggage of this type, is open to the objection, that when carried, it is frequently carried by only one of the handles, putting an undue strain on that handle, and also upon the fastenings which are relied upon to close the opening.
One object of this invention, is to overcome this objection.
This and further objects will more fully appear from the following specification and accompanying drawing, considered together or separately.
In the drawing Figure l is a perspective view, of a hand bag, showing one embodiment of my invention, in closed condition, with the two handles secured together;
Figure 2 is a similar view, of the same, but with the handles separated, but with the opening closed; and
Figure 3 is a similar view, of the same, but with the handles separated, and the bag opening open.
In all of the views, like parts are designated by the same reference characters.
The body I of the bag or other baggage, may be made of any size, shape or material.
It has an opening 2, so that the interior may be reached, for putting in or taking out articles.
This opening is closed by a slide fastener 3, of the well known type.
The handle members 4 and 5, are attached to the body, one on each side of the opening. They are so designed, and proportioned, that when the opening 2, is closed, the two handle members may be grasped by one hand, and the bag thereby carried.
A second slide fastener 6, is located outside of the first named fastener 3, but is attached to and passed over the two handle members, so as to connect them together. When so connected, they in eifect become one, and distribute the weight of the baggage between them, and keep 1934, Serial No. 732,616
the baggage from becoming open by stress.
The two slide fasteners are shown, as each extending to the extreme ends of the opening, but this is not necessary, as either or both of the slide fasteners may be shorter, so that in the aggregate they will unite the two edges of the opening, and at the same time unite the two handle members. When so made, it is necessary that both fasteners begin at one extremity of the bag opening, either both at the same extremity, in which event, either one may stop at the further part of the handle members, and. the other continue to the extremity of the opening, or if they begin at opposite extremities of the opening, either may stop before reaching the other extremity of the opening, so long as both handle members are secured together, and the opening closed completely. The two slid fasteners may be arranged, so that the actuating device, with which each is provided, may both move in the same direction to open or close them, or may be arranged, so that one moves in one direction, and the other in the opposite direction. This application for patent, is a modification of an application for patent filed by me January 6, 1934, Serial Number 705,488.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and. desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
Hand baggage, having a flexible bag, an opening therein, said opening extending across the greater portion of the bag, a pair of handle members, one on each side of the opening, and extending beyond the edges of the opening, but
occupying less length than the entire opening,
a slide closure fastener, secured to the free edges of the opening, on each side of the bag, beyond the points of attachment of the handle members, and also to the abutting edges of the handle members, and a second slide closure fastener, inside of the first mentioned closure fastener, for closing that portion of the opening not closed by the first mentioned closure fastener.
