- UNITED STATE 5.. PATENT oF IcE.
P nt s. MOQUIRK, or AUDUBON, IowA.
GOLF BAG.
Application filed June 29, 1925. I Serial' at. 40,345.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHIL S. M QUIRK, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Audubon, in the county of Audubon and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Golf Bags and I do declare the following to be. a full, clear, and exact description of the, 111VI14 tion, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains'to make and use the same. i
My invention relates to improvements in golf bags, and one object thereof is to provide a unique form of closure for the upper end of the bag, including a sleeve to surround the upper portion of said bag, said above referred to, may be applied to the.
lower end of the bag when its use is not 'desired at the upper end thereof. 7
With the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and c'laiined, thc de-' scription being supplemented by the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a golf bag improved in accordance with my'invention.
Figure 2 is a partial side elevation showing the closure applied to thelower' end of the bag.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the closure detached from the bag.
In the drawing above briefly described,
the numeral 1 designates a conventional golf.
near lts upper end, a staple'below the handle,
bag having the usual carrying handle 2 near its upper end and provided also with a shoulder strap 3 and a ball pocket 4. The numeral 5 designates aclosure for the upper end of the bag 1, said closure having a downwardly projecting sleeve 6 to surround the upper portion of said bag. This sleeve is formed with a longitudinal slot 7 to receive the handle2 and the upper portion of the strap 3, and provision is made for securing the sleeve to the bag, at opposite sides of said slot. 'In the present showing, links 8 are disposed at the "lower corner portions of the sleeve 6, at opposite be opened byv edges of the slot 7 and I have'shown these links carried'by the ends of a strap 9 which I is secured to the lower end of said sleeve. The, two links 8 are adapted for passage over a staple or the like' lO carried by the bag 1, under the handle 2, and a padlock 11 is provided for engagement with the sta-pletov eifectievly lock the closure in place upon the bag, preventing unauthon ized persons from opening the latter.
Preferably, whenthe closure is not in use,
the sleeve 6 is placed over the lower end of thebag 1 as shown in'Fig. 2 and the staple. 8 ay then be swung overan additional staple 10 ,"and held in place by the lock 11. -When the device is applied to the bagin this manner, it is not only entirely out of the way, but it forms an effective reinforcement for the bottom of said bag.
When either applying or "removing the sleevefi, the slot 7 permits expansion thereof, so that frictional contact with the bag is relieved and the operation may be easily performed. i Preferably, the leather with suitable reinforcing stays, such as those indicated at 12 in dotted lines. is to be understood however that the invention'is, not restricted to the useof stays, nor to the use of any particular materials.
Iclaimz" u 1 j 1. A golf bag having a carrying handle near itsupper end, a staple below the handle,
aclosure for the upper end of said bag I v so closure is formed of having a downwardly projecting sleeve to I surround the upper portion of said, bag,
said sleeve having a longitudinal slot which opens through its lower end to receive said handle, and a pair of links engaged over the staple for connecting the edges of said slot with each other under said handle.
2. A golf bag having a carrying handle aclosure for the upper end of said bag having a downwardly projecting sleeve to surroundv the upper portion of said bag, said sleeve having a longitudinal slot which fixedmy signature. PHIL 'S; MCQUIRK.
