LORENZO oon, AND MILTON H. LUOE.
CARRIER AND HANDLE THEREFOR.
Application filed. June 19, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LORENZO L. Loon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carriers and Handles Therefor; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, ref erence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to carriers and particularly to portable receptacles for papers, merchandise, and the like.
The invention resides in providing a novel handle arrangement for the carrier and while the invention is capable of a multitude of applications, I have shown it as applied to a leather case and for the purpose of disclosing a comprehensive conception of the invention, I will hereinafter refer to it in connection with a leather case, although this term is used in its broadest sense to include receptacles of any kind to which the invention is applicable, or to parcel carriers as well.
In the drawings,
Figure I is a perspective view of a leather case to which my invention is applied.
Fig. II is a fragmentary perspective view showing the handle members separated, and
Fig. III is a crosssectional view through the handle when the members are secured together.
Referring now to the drawings by numerals of reference:
1 designates a case provided with a closure flap 2, carrying a latch member 3 to engage a keeper in the lock 4 of approved construction. The handles are here shown as consisting of two members designated 5 and 6 respectively. and they form part of a leather loop consisting of a band 7 looped over the case and secured thereto by the loops 8. The handle members are diametrically opposite one another and the handle 6 is formed by folding over a part Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 16, 1920.
Serial No. 305,386.
of the strap or loop 7 about a felly or core 9 and sewing the edges 10 and 11 together.
The complementary handle member 5 consists of a channeled or grooved body secured to the strap 7 by rivets or other suitable fastening means, indicated by the reference numerals l2 and 13. The complementaiy member is preferably made of a sheet metal core 14:, covered with leather and provided with arcuate terminals 15 and 16 to engage the strap when the complementary member 6 is received in the groove of the member 5.
When access is to be had to the case or receptacle 1, the members will be separated as shown in Fig. II, but when it is desired to carry the case, the member 6 will be received in the grooved member 5 which constitutes the grip for the handle so that only one grip will be presented to the person carrying the device.
Liability of the handle member 6 becoming accidentally separated from the memher 5 during transportation will be avoided by the arcuate fingers 15 and 16, which act as keepers for the handle 6 by bearing upon the strap 7 as will be apparent by reference to Fig. I.
With a carrier such as disclosed in my invention the entire weight is carried by the strap or band 7 so that liability of the bandle tearing loose from the case will be eliminated and since the entire weight is supported by the band or strap 7, there will be no excessive strains upon the case 1 as would occur if the handles were fastened to the top of the case.
In so far as the handle or grip feature of the invention is concerned, however, the invention is also applicable to that class of cases in which the handles would be secured by short straps sewed to the sides of the case or to some other convenient portion thereof.
lVhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:
1. A carrier having a handle consisting the fingers bear upon the carrier to lock the second mentioned member in the groove.
2. A carrier having a handle consisting of two members, one of which is of channel form and provided With pointed, outstanding fingers et its respective ends, the other member being receivable Within the channel and having a part thereof extendible beneath the fingers whereby the two parts of the handle are locked together. 10
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
LORENZO L. LUCE.
