Description

R. T. EMERY.
TRUNK BAND- APPLICATION mm MAR. I3, 1920.
,PatentedSpt. 21,1920.
. INVENTOR ATTORNEYS RALPH TELLEB, EMERY, or CLEVELAND, OHIO.
TRUNK-BAND.
To all whom it may concern):
Be it known that I,.RALrI-r T. EMERY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State-of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Trunk-Band, of which the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription.
This invention relates to improvements in trunk bands, an object of, the invention being to provide an arrangement of bands or straps preferably of bendable metal, al-' though, of course, they may be of other material which can be positioned around a trunk and securely looked in place, and
when in such position will operate to strengthen the trunk and prevent injury thereto as well as prevent opening of the trunk by unauthorized persons.
A further object is to provide improvements ofv the characterstated, which can be manufactured and sold at a reasonably low price, which will not disfigure' the trunk and which will most efiiciently perform the functions for which they are intended.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating my improvements in position on a trunk;
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of my improved arrangement of bands;
Fig. 3 is'a fragmentary detail view showing the connection between two of the bands crossing each other; and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged view in section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
My improved device comprises preferably four bands 1, 2, 3, and 4. The bands 1, 2 are adapted to be positioned transversely around a trunk 5 and the bands 3, 4 are adapted to be positioned longitudinally around the trunk 5. The bands 1, 2 and 3, 4 are parallel to each other with the bands 1, 2 positioned at right angles to the bands 3, 4 and said pairs of bands are spaced apart the desired distance in accordance with the size of the trunk to be secured.
It will be noted particularly by reference to Fig. 2 that while the bands 1, 2 and the bands 3, 4 are parallel to each other, the
Specification of Letters Patent. Patentqgd Sept 21, Application filed March 13, 1920. Serial No. 365,414. I
ends of the pairs of bands are not in aline ment rem. reason which will hereinafter appear.
To removably couple the bands 3, 4 to the bands 1, 2, I preferably provide slots 6 in the bands 3, 4 receiving headed rivets 7 fixed to the bands 1, 2 and the slots 6 are made with enlarged ends 8 for the passage of the heads :of the rivets 6 to allow the bands to be disconnected so that they can be packed and stored in relatively smallspace.
The band 1 is provided at one end with a staple 9 and at its other end with a hasp 10. The band 2 is likewise provided at one end with a staple 9 and at its other end with a hasp 10, but the staple and hasp are positioned on the ends of the band 2 opposite to the arrangement of staple and hasp on the band 1. The bands 3, 4 are provided with slots 11' in their ends to receive the staples 9 of the bands 1, 2 when the bands are posi tioned around the trunk as shown in Fig. 1,
and padlocks 12 are positioned through the ends of the bands are then positioned around 7 over the staple 9 of the band 2 and secured by its padlock 12. v
It will thus be noted that the longitudinally positioned bands 3, 4 are locked to the transversely positioned bands 1, 2 so that the cover 13 of the trunk 5 cannot be raised even though its lock 14 be out of order, and
furthermore, the trunk will be strengthened against strains and stresses in all directions so as to prevent injury to the trunk by rough handling in transit. p v
The bands 1, 2,3, and 4 are preferably of metal and are as light in weight as possible while I believe metal would be the preferred material to use, my invention is, of course, not limited to the use of metal as I may employ any other material in the construction of the bands.
Various slight changes might be made in consistent with strength and durability, and
the general form and arrangement of parts bands being removably connected to both members or" the other pair of bands at their intermediate portion, staples and hasps on the opposite ends of one pair of bands, the other pair of bands having slots in their ends to receive the staples, and the ends of the bands having slots adapted to be locked between the ends of the bands having staples and hasps adjacent oppositely disposed corners on the upper side of the trunk.
