Description

H. E. WALTER.
' HANDBAG HANDLE. APPLICATION FILED OCT. 12, 1920.
Patented Apr. 5, 1921.
' IIVVE/I/TOB f/ZMGE ,5. VMQLZEE By W5 Arron/ms HORACE EVERETT OF RICHMOND,
VIRGINIA.
HANDBAG-HANDLE.
, Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 12, 1920. Serial No. 416,373.
To all 'wkhm it may concern Be it known that I, HORACE E. Warren, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Richmond, in the county of Henrlco and State of Vir inia, have invented a new and Improved andbag-Handle, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descr ption.
This invention relates to improvements in hand bag handles and particularly to that form of handle which comprises two members and is commonly known as a split handle.
With this type of handle the two members are secured on opposite sides of the mouth of the hand bag, and when the bag is set down they tend to fall apart or away from each other. It is a source of great inconvenience to travelers, especially when they are carrying more than one bag, to plck up a hand bag which is equipped with the usual form of split handle.
It is an object of my invention, to provide means for removably locking the two handle members of a split handle toi gether.
A further object is to provide a looking or fastening "means which may be readily attached, which will be practical in use, and will not'ten'd to increase the cost of the hand ba .%Vith these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hand bag' with whi h my improved handle is e loyed.
ig. 2 is a top plan view of the .hand bag, and illustrates diagrammatically the method of separating the handle members when they are in locked position.
Referring in detail to the drawings, .1 represents a conventional type of hand he wherein a pair of substantially U-shaped handle members 2 and 3 are employed and secured to the bag at opposite sides of the therefore,
hinged frame 4, which forms the mouth of t e bag.
The members 2 and 3 are identical and present a pair of opposed flat inner faces 5 and 6 which are brought together when the handle members are used to lift the bag.
I have illustrated loops 7 of leather or some similar material sewed to the outer faces of the bag at each side of the mouth thereofand buckles 8 connecting the loops 7 with the extremities 9 of the handle members 2 and 3. It is to be'understood, however, that the particular methodv of securing the handle members to the bag is immaterral. y invention resides in the provislon of a pair of snap fastener members 10 and 11 in the opposed faces :5Jal'1d 6 of the handle members I have illustrated the female element 10 of the to the handle member 2, and the male .element l1 fixed to the handle member. 3.
It will thus be readily seen that .by snappin the fastening members together the ban is members are prevented from falling away from each. other when the bag is set down.
Although I have illustrated a snap fastener for accomplishing this object, it is obvious that various other fastening devices might be employed with equal success to removably lock the handle members together.
To unlock the handle members when it is desired to open the bag, it is merely necessary to insert the thumb and forefin er between the members spreading or orcing them apart as shown clearly lnFig. 2.
Various slight changes and alterations might be made in the general form of the parts described without departing from my invention, "and hence I do not wish to limit Patented Apr. 5, 1921.-
