Description

Jan. 21, 1936. 1.. c. LINDSVEY 2,028,461
SWIMMING GLOVE Filed June 26, 1934 ATTOR N EY Patented Jan. 21, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to swimming gloves, and its general object is to provide a glove of the web type, which is capable of presenting maximum water resistance when spread or extended for that purpose, and minimum resistance when folded, with the result the glove will materially increase the speed of the swimmer and with very little effort in that the action of the glove is auto-- matic, merely by the spreading and folding of the hand of its user.
A further object of the invention is to provide a swimming glove that is light in weight, can be fixedly associated with the hand of the user with out fear of casual displacement or removal therefrom, is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and extremely efficient in use and service.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction. and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a rear View of the glove which forms the subject matter of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view thereof with the web carrying arms in full and dotted lines.
Figure 3 is a detail view of the web spreading device.
Figure 4 is an edge view thereof. 7
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference numeral l indicates the body of my glove which as shown is provided with a curved outer end, and a straight inner end. The body has secured thereto in any well known manner, such as-stitching or the like, finger and thumb forming portions 2 which are of a size and secured together to provide a hand portion 3, the latter being likewise secured to the body and has secured to the irmer end thereof a collar 4 which provides a wrist portion. e
The above described elements may be forme from any well known materiaL such as sheet rubber or cloth fabric, or a combination of both,
' and the edge of the body I may be reinforced by a hem or the like 5, but in any event it will be apparent upon inspection of Figure 1, that the body I provides a web for the glove, between the fingers and thumb, as well as laterally of the hand portion, and for distinction the lateral web portions are indicated by the reference numeral 6, as they are a very important feature of my I glove.
The wrist portion 4 may not be in the form of a collar to completely encircle the wrist, but in any event the wrist portion has secured thereto loops 1 for the purpose of receiving a wrist encircling strap 3, the latter including a buckle 9 having the usual tongue to be received in openings of the strap for fastening the glove about the wrist of the wearer, as will be apparent.
Secured to the strap 8 is a strip of material It which is preferably formed from metal and is shaped to provide a fiat intermediate portion to receive the strap 8 and channeled end portions II that extend beyond the wrist portion for the purpose of pivotally receiving the inner ends of arms I2 which are likewise channel shape in configuration for the purpose of receiving and having secured between the parallel portions thereof the inner edges of the lateral web portions 6 as clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawing. The arms l2 have their pivotedends loosely mounted within the channeled end portions to allow easy movement thereof on their pivots, so that when the glove is in use and the user spreads his hand, the arms will extend outwardly in alignment with the strip ill, to hold the lateral web portions spread accordingly, in order to present maximum water resistance, which is present due to the cooperation of the web portions l3 between the fingers and thumb. However, when the user folds his hand, the arms l2 will be moved on their pivots for disposal at an angle to the strip ID to present minimum water resistance.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire itto be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is:
A swimming glove comprising a body,'hand receiving means secured to the body and including thumb and finger portions, said means being secured to the body in a manner to provide webs between the'thumb and finger portions and laterally of saidmeans, a Wrist portion secured to the hand portion, a strap including a buckle and cooperating with the wrist portion for securing the glove to the hand of the user, a strip secured to the strap and having channeled end portions, and channeled means having one of their ends received in the channeled end portions for pivotal movement, and said channeled means receiving the inner free edges of the lateral webs in the channels thereof with the edges secured therein so that said channeled means will hold the lateral webs in spread or folded positions upon movement of the handof the user accordingly.
