Description

W. KENNISH. Insect Powder Gun.
No. 202,830. Patented April 23, 1878..
NJETERS, PHOTO-LITHOGFIAPNER, WASnmsYoN D c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM KENNISH, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN INSECT-POWDER GUNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 202,830, dated April 23, 1878; application filed February 4, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM KENNISH, of the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Insect Powder Guns, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
The object of my invention is to invest an ordinary commercial insect-powder package with the function of a gun or bellows.
This I accomplish by constructing a cylindrical box of paper or other suitable material, A, Figures 1 and 2, with an elastic top, E, secured to the box by a ring, B. I also furnish a conical spout, O, to the box, through which the inclosed powder is ejected.
In the drawing accompanying, Fig. 1 is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 a section of the gun.
The conical spout C is made of the same material as the box A, and is fastened to it by an adhesive substance. It is closed to the passage of the powder until required to be used, when the point at F is cut off by a sharp knife or scissors. The conical form of spout 0 gives opportunity to regulate the size of the orifice by cutting off more or less, as desired.
The object of the spout being closed is to thereby entirely inclose the insect-powder, and to prevent it absorbing moisture from the air, which would cause it to cake or become hardened, and thus useless for the purpose required.
The elastic cover is formed bylaying on the top rim of the box a circular piece of indiarubber sheeting about a quarter of an inch larger in diameter than the box, and permanently fastened to it by a ring of paper or other suitable substance, B, which is pressed down over the rubber and secured by adhesive gum. It is not intended that the cover shall be removed, the gun having performed its full service when it has expelled its inclosed powder.
The operation of expelling the powder is performed by depressing the elastic top E by the thumb, which condenses the air inclosed in the box, and blows out the powder at F.
I claim- The closed conical spout C, in combination with the cylinder A, provided with an elastic top, substantially as and for the purpose described.
WILLIAM KEN NISH.
