Description

L. W. P. GRAY & T. S. JOHNSON.
Bale-Tie.
Patented April 23.1878.
WI- JES ELS.
N. PETE-HQ, FHOYO UTHOGRPM ASH NGTON D C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEONARDIS W. I. GRAY AND THOMAS S. JOHNSON, OF NEW ORLEANS, LA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BALE-TIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 202,719, dated April 23, 1878 application filed February 11, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LEONARDIS W. P. GRAY and THOMAS S. JOHNSON, residents of the city of New Orleans, parish of Orleans, and State of Louisiana, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Bale- Ties; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and correct description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in a combination of two metallic plates, each provided With a rectangular slot for the reception of the opposite ends of a bale-band, as will hereinafter be described.
On the drawing, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the two sections. Fig. 2 is a side view of the device and bale-band, the latter before being finally secured to the former; and Fig. 3, a perspective view ofthe device with the ends of a band secured therein.
Our device, as above stated, is composed of two sections, A B, each provided with a rectangular slot, 0 d, the former slot made a little Wider than the latter section, which, in the practice of the invention, is inserted therein; but which, however, is prevented from passing entirely through the same by reason of its side projections e 6. These are pressed from the body of the plate, as shown, in order to enable the two sections to be brought together and assume parallel positions. The slot in the section B is made a little wider than an ordinary bale-band, and the section A is preferably made with end hooks f 9, though they may, in the manufacture of the device, be omitted, if so desired.
The application is as follows: One end of a band is first bent into an oblate hook, which is made to engage the band-seat h of the section B, the said section having been first inserted in the opening of the section A, as shown in Fig. 2. The opposite end of the band is then passed around the bale, and the section A raised clear of the section B, so as to permit of the aforesaid end of band being passed upward to the opening 01, through which it is drawn either by hand or by means of a tightening device. During the process of drawing in the slack of the band the hold upon the section A is released, thereby allowing it to slip down over the hanging section B and against that end of the band which is being drawn through the same, causing the aforesaid end to be bent back at this point of contact over the band-seat z the moment the bale is released from pressure, the said bending being insured by the tendency of the section to be drawn in opposite directions by reason of the friction on their under or rather inner sides.
Having described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A bale-tie composed of two sections, A B, each provided with a rectangular slot, and the latter section with side projections, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto signed our names.
L. W. P. GRAY. T. S. JOHNSON.
In presence of- J. O. HUBBELL, P. I. FINNEY.
