3 Claims.
This invention relates to an improved holding device for receptacles and it has more specific reference to a simple and economical wire structure fashioned to serve as a detachable clamp and handle for cans and the like.
The purpose of the invention is to enable so called tins and cans to be salvaged in and around the home so that by attaching the improved holder thereto, the complete assembly constitutes a practical and convenient structure for handling liquids, whereby to provide a convenient drinking cup, or so-called dipper.
The specific details and features which serve to characterize the novel holder will become more readily apparent from the accompanying illustrative drawings.
In the drawings wherein like numerals are employed to designate corresponding details or parts throughout the views:
Figure l is a top plan view of an ordinary tin or can with the holder attached permitting the complete assembly to serve as a simple dipper.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view thereof.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the plane of the line 33 of Figure 2.
Figures 4 and 5 are perspectives of the essential details forming the unique wire holder.
The novelty in the present application resides, not in the combination of the can and holder but rather in the construction of the wire holder itself and the description and claims will be so worded. As a matter of convenience however, the receptacle and can is denoted by the letter A.
The wire holder is made up of two essential or complemental parts namely, the retaining clip 6 shown in Figure 4 and the complemental handle equipped can encircling or clamping device shown in Figure 5. The part illustrated in Figure 5 is formed from a single length of wire of appropriate tensile strength. It is bent to form a split clamping ring I to embrace or encircle the can, said ring being provided with a two part handle 8 and said handle being associated with an underlying stabilizing means to be hereinafter specifically described.
One end of the wire is indicated at the point 9 and this particular end portion of the wire is bent upon itself to form a stabilizing frame or brace l 0. That is to say, the wire is fashioned to form a triangular portion ll below which is a loop 12. Extending from the free end of the loop the wire is bent laterally as indicated at I3 to provide a horizontal brace arm M. This brace arm is bent laterally upward as indicated at l5 and then laterally to one side as indicated at [5 to form a portion of one of the handle forming members or arms ll. The wire beyond the inner end of this arm is formed into the split can or receptacle encircling clamp or ring I and is then directed back in spaced relation to provide the remaining handle member or arm 18. The extremity of the wire, that is the other end of the wire, is wrapped around adjacent portions at the juncture of the parts l5 and I6 as indicated at l 9. This double arm part I1 and I8 forms the complete handle or carrier 8. The inner ends of the arms I! and I8 are formed with bends 20 which function as detents for the slidable retaining clip 6. This clip is also formed from a single piece of wire, one end of which is bent to provide a hook 2| and the other end to provide a similar or complemental hook 22. These two hooks engage with the bends or detents 20 in an obvious manner and the remaining portion of the wire is bent down to form a leg 23 which terminates in an eye 24 slidable along the brace arm l4. Obviously, by compressing the arms I! and I8 together, the hooks 22 and 2| can clear the detents 20 allowing the clip 6, as a unit, to be slid to the outer end of the handle and this permits the radial expansion of the clamping ring I so as to allow it to be applied to the can or removed from the can as the case may be.
Particular novelty will be found in the arms El and I8 cooperating with each other to define the handle 8 and provided with bends 2t serving as detents for the hook portions 2i and 22 of the slidable retaining clip 6. Additional novelty is predicated on the loop l2 and triangular frame H cooperating in providing a foot or stabilizing element to bear against the can and to render the structure, as a whole, rigid and dependable. The rod portion l4, however, forms an important part of the bracing means and also constitutes a track to accommodate the eye equipped leg 23. All of these parts have been carefully selected and formulated to promote the requisite coaction of features with the result that an unusually simple and efiicient device characterized by practical facility is provided.
It is thought that persons skilled in the art to which the invention relates will be able to obtain a clear understanding of the invention after considering the description in connection with the drawings. Therefore, a more lengthy de scription is regarded as unnecessary.
Minor changes in shape, size and rearrangement of details coming within the field of invention claimed may be resorted to in actual practice, if desired.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
l. A can holder and carrier of the class de scribed, comprising a split ring having spaced members providing a handle, a substantially triangular frame located within the diameter of said ring disposed at right angles thereto and constituting a stabilizing foot and designed to bear against the can above and below the ring portion, and a bracing wire connected at one end with said stabilizing foot and at its opposite end with the outer end of the handle.
2. A can holder and carrier of the class described, comprising a split ring having spaced members providing a handle, a substantially triangular frame located within the diameter of said ring disposed at right angles thereto and constituting a stabilizing foot and designed to bear against the can, a bracing wire connected at one end with said stabilizing foot and at its opposite end with the outer end of the handle, the inner ends of said handle members being provided with detents, and a slidable retaining clip provided with hooks releasably engageable with said detents, said clip being further provided with a depending leg having an eye slidably mounted on said bracing wire.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a wire clamp and carrier for cans and the like formed from a single length of wire, one end portion of the wire being bent upon itself to provide a vertical stabilizing foot to bear against the can, that portion of the wire adjacent said foot being extended at right angles to provide a bracing rod, and the next adjacent portion of the wire being bent to provide a pair of spaced expansible and contractible members constituting a handle and a split ring to embrace the can centrally of the stabilizing foot.
