This invention relates to a combination container for paste or the like and a, brush for applying the paste, a portion of the brush serving as a cover for the container, when the device is not in use.

One object of this invention is to provide a combination brush and paste box in which a portion of the back of the brush, is made to serve as a tight fitting cover for the paste box, when the latter is not actually in use. I I

Another object of this invention is to provide a device of the'type just described in which there is provided an ancillary handle serving as a convenient means of holding the paste box when in use, and also serving as a portion of the device which retains the brush in place upon the top of the box, so as to cover the latter when not in use.

Still another object of this invention is to provide a device of the type described in which an empty paste box may easily be discarded and replaced by a full box.

Yet another object of this invention is to provide a combination brush and cover which can be expeditiously placed upon a box of paste, so as tightly to seal the same, without the need of tightening screws or the like.

A further object of this invention is to provide a device of the character described in which resilient means are provided for maintaining the cover portion of the brush and the top of the v 7 Claims, (Cl. 15258) paste .box tightly pressing against one another,

so as to prevent undesired evaporation of liquid from the paste, when the device is not inuse.

A still further purpose of this invention is to provide a combination brush and paste box, wherein a recessed portion of the back of the brush is designed to function as a cover for the box, when not in use, and in which such recess is provided with one or more resilient sealing rings, so that exact parallelism between the cover and the box is not essential in order to secure an air-tight seal.

Still another purpose of this invention is to provide acombination device of thecharacter above described, in which the sealing of the paste box by the portion of the handle serving as a cover can be readily accomplished without the need of using more than one hand, is firmly maintained without the need of fastening screws or the like, and in which it is possible to disengage the box and the cover, when desired, quickly and easily.

Still further objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art. from the following specification and from the hereunto annexed drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a side elevation of one form oi the device of the present invention, the twomajor elements being shownseparated for purposes ,of clarity, and the handle being partly broken away to show the sealing cover;

Referring now to Figures 1 m3 inclusive, the paste box is shown at it), It is provided with a peripheral groove Il', near the upper edge of the box. The handle 20 of the brush element maybe constructed of any shape suitable for grippingby the hand, and of any suitable material, such as plastic or a metal which will not easily oxidize or corrode. Near one end of the handle are pro vided, upon one side thereof, the usual bristles 2|. These may be of any material and shape suited to be used with the paste employed in a givenin stance. The other side of the handle, at a point opposite the bristles, is recessed as indicatedat character or operation of the invention. Inc'as'e of any particular shape of box, the portion l2 of the box-holder and the recess 22 of the brush handle will merely be made of a contour corresponding to that exhibited by the box. The upper end of recess 22 is lined with a resilient ring or washer, 24, of rubber or other similar material. This allows an air-tight seal to be made between the upper edge of box l and the cover portion of the brush.

For proper maintenance of the seal of the box when not in use, brush 20 is provided with alcohing portion 25, as shown in Eigure .2. 6. A combination according to claim 4, inwhioh saidlocking means comprises a slotted member,

externally situated upon said brush handle, 70 whereby a portion of said, resilient box'handle may be forced within the slot of said member, by flexing of said resilienthandle towards thebrush handle.

7.;A combination according to claim .4,.in which said locking meanscomprisestwo substantially parallel inverted U-shaped members, formed integrally with said resilient handle and extending in a direction towards said brush handle, when the two handles are approximated, said brush handle being provided with a suitably shaped aperture into which said U-shaped members can readily enter .by flexing of said resilient handle towards said brush handle, and also being provided With projecting body portions extending in the plane of the brush handle and transversely to the greater length thereof, into said aperture, whereby said U-shaped members may be locked with said projecting portions, so as to be locked within said aperture, after the force producing said lateral flexing has been terminated.
