STEPHEN W. ALLEN AND ISAAC COOK, OF TONIQA, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOOT-UPPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 202,393, dated April 16, 1878; application filed March 19, 1878.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that we, STEPHEN W. ALLEN and ISAAC 000K, of Tonica, in the county of La Salle and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boot Uppers, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a front perspective view of the vamps and front leg of a boot to which our improvement has been applied. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the same, taken through the line a: 00, Figs. 1 and 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish boots which shall be so constructed that they will not wrinkle, which will not shrink will enable the leather to be cut with very little waste, and which will not need to be crimped.
The invention consists in boot-uppers, in which the forward part of the leg is made in two pieces, seamed to each other at their forward edges, and seamed at their lower ends with a lap-seam to the Vamps, as hereinafter fully described.
The forward part of the leg of the boot is made in two pieces, A B, which are seamed to each other at their forward edges. The lower edges of the pieces-A B are sewed to the Vamps G with a lap-seam, so as to have 'a smooth inner surface to bear upon the foot.
This construction enables the pieces A B O to be so out as to fit the foot accurately, and thus avoid the wetting and stretching of the leather necessary in crimping, and which weakens the leather, and renders it liable to wrinkle and shrink.
This construction also enables the leather to be cut with less waste, and all parts of the boot to be made of a more uniform thickness, than when the Vamps and front leg are out in one piece. The rear part of the leg and the quarters are made in the usual way.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Boot-uppers in which the forward part of the leg is made in two pieces, seamed to each other at their forward edges, and seamed at their lower ends with a lap-seam to the Vamps G, substantially as herein shown and described.
