Description

@6360 MP, 1935. Q R Es 2,923,901
CHILDS STEP FOR USE IN COMBINATION WITH TOILET STOOLS Filed July 30, 1954 IN VENTOR.
E3- I ES'LEIL ERH UEE W ATTORNEY.
Patented Dec. 10, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CHILDS STEP FOR USE IN COMBINATION WITH TOILET STOOLS 2 Claims.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a portable step for use in combination with toilet stools that permits children of tender years to use the stool without aid.
5 A further object of my invention is to provide a toilet stool step for children that may be left in operative position without interfering with the use of the toilet by older individuals.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a toilet stool step for children-that provides a suitable and comfortable support for the feet of the user while sitting on the stool.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a toilet stool step that is safe and does not easily upset.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a toilet stool step that is sanitary and easily kept clean.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a childs step for use in connection with toilet stools that is economical in manufacture and durable in use.
These and other objects will be apparent to those skilled in the art.
My invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the various parts of the device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my toilet stool step ready for use.
Fig. 2 is a front view of my device in proper operative position relative to a toilet stool.
Fig. 3 is an end view of the step adjacent a toilet stool.
Ordinary toilet stools are not adapted for the use of children, due to their height. Heretofore, the general practise is to use other means until the child can at least walk, after which he is lifted upon and down from the usual adult size toilet stool. This is quite a frequent task and therefore objectionable. Mere benches or like placed in front of the toilet stool in order that the child may serve itself are also objectionable, as such means do not provide a foot support at each side of the stool, but is entirely forward of the stool and subject to upsetting when the child stoops to sit upon the toilet stool. I have overcome all such objections by providing a bench step that is not treacherous, but one that successfully serves the child and instils confidence in the child that he can use the toilet stool without aid.
Referring to the drawing, I have used the numeral In to designate an ordinary toilet stool of the bowl type having a seat H and lid l2. It is in combination with such a toilet stool that I use my device and which I will now describe.
My bench step consists of a top portion l3 and end leg members M, as shown in the drawing. 5 These leg members extend downwardly and outwardly in order to give the device stability and eliminate any danger of upsetting by the weight of the child upon one end portion of the device. To further promote the stability of the step the leg members at each end of the step spread relative to each other in order that they will extend beyond the vertical side edge planes of the top portion l3. However, one of the most important features of my device is a slot opening l5 cut in one side edge portion of the top l3, as shown in Fig. 1. This slot opening I5 is designed to loosely embrace the lower forward portion of the toilet stool, as shown in Fig. 2 and Fig. 3. By this construction the bench step will (when in 3;) proper operative position) be in front of the toilet bowl and at each side of the toilet bowl. When in such position the weight of the child when stooping to sit on the stool and when arising will be at points near the center of the bench 7;; step. Also, the portions of the top 93 at each side of the seat ll will provide proper support for the feet at all times. The slot opening l5 will permit the bench step to assume a position well to the rear and out of the way of mature .33 persons using the stool. The slot opening will also, by loosely embracing the toilet stool, make the bench step almost upset proof.
The numeral [6 designates a covering over the top of the top I3. This coveringl6 should be of 3.3 water-proof material such as rubber, composition, or like, for sanitary reasons and for providing a non-slip footing for the user.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a highly desirable bench step for chil- -1 dren and one that permits the child to stand close to or over the toilet stool.
Some changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of my improved childs step for use in combination with toilet stools without departing from the real spirit and purpose of my invention, and it is my intention to cover by my claims any modified forms of structure or use of mechanical equivalents which may be reasonably included within their scope.
I claim:
1. In combination with a toilet stool, a bench step comprising an elongated top portion designed to have its length extend transversely of 55 i id the toilet stool and having a slot opening in one of its side marginal edges for the reception of the forward portion of said toilet stool, and a supporting leg element at each end of said top portion extending downwardly and outwardly to points beyond and outside of the vertical planes of the ends of said top portion respectively.
2. In combination with a toilet stool, a bench step comprising an elongated top portion de- 10 signed to have its length extend transversely of
