FOLDABLE CHILDS COMBINED LADDER AND AUXILIARY TOILET SEAT Filed March 2, 1929 l rarx rf f y 12m fave 276w:
Patented Nov. 26, 1929 UET URBAN A. KEPPINGER, OF PORTLAND, OREGON Application filed March 2, 1929. Serial No. 343,988.
The primary object of my invention is to provide an auxiliary toilet seat for young children adapted to be set on the usual seat of toilet fixtures, and provided with a ladder having steps up which the child may climb to seat himself, without assistance from anyone. Further, to include in the ladder a footrest so arranged as to insure that when the child has placed its feet on such rest, it will assume the most hygienic position inducing action of the bowels. Further, to provide the auxiliary toilet seat with arms to hold the child from falling ofi.
A further object of my invention is to promote the training of the child to take care of itself. In this respect the climbing up the steps of the ladder of my auxiliary toilet seat, in order to use the latter, appeals to the playful nature of the child and thus facilitates its training.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a foldable combined auxiliary toilet seat and ladder of simple and inexpensive construction, and of light weight, which may be easily carried about, and folded up and put.
away when not in use; and which will occupy very little space when in used and which also may be readily and quickly set up.
A still further object of my invention is to provide an auxiliary toilet seat adaptable to all heights of standard toilet fixtures, without previous adjustment or alterations.
I attain my objects in a foldable combined ladder and auxiliary toilet seat, comprising an auxiliary toilet seat hinged at its front end to the upper end of said ladder, the sides of the ladder extending above said toilet seat, a back hinged to the rear end of said toilet seat, arms pivota-lly secured at their opposite ends to the upper ends of the sides of the lad der and the sides of said back and the joints connecting the parts being adapted to permit the folding of the toilet seat and the back thereof in parallel relation, one over the other, against the rear side of the ladder.
The details of the features and construction of my invention, and the mode of using the same are hereinafter fully described with ref erence to the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 shows a perspective view of the usual standard toilet. seat and my supplementary seat arranged thereon;
Fig. 2 shows a longitudinal vertical section of my seat, removed from the toilet seat;
Fig. 3 shows a similar section to Fig. 2 except that my seat has been folded;
Fig. 4 shows a fragmentary perspective View of my seat taken from the rear;
Fig. 5 shows certain details of construction of the back of the seat and the fastening means employed; and
Figs. 6 and 7 illustrate in fragmentary sections, further details of construction.
With reference to the figures, my invention comprises an auxiliary seat section a, the center of which has been cutaway as at o, to conform tothe shape of the adult toilet seat 0, but of proportionately smaller dimensions. A back cl is hinged to the rear of said seat section by means of angle irons e and staples or eyes f Side arms 9 are hingedly connected at their rear ends to theback d by angle irons k and pins 2', and at their forwards ends to parallel spaced members by pins j. The members j are hingedly connected below their upper ends to the front portion of the seat section at in in a similar manner to the other hinged connections.
Transverse sections Z are secured between the members j thus forming a ladder or steps. A supplementary section m is hinged to the top section or step Z as at n, which when run folded forms a foot-rest, so that the child will naturally assume a hygienic position.
in the use of my toilet seat as illustrated by Fig. 1, the seat when unfolded is arranged on the adult toilet seat with the step sections resting on the floor and when removed is folded as illustrated in Fig. 3. 7
Rubber buttons or the like are provided on the underside the seat section a to prevent the seat from slipping or moving laterally off the adult toilet seat a, and friction pads g or the like are provided on the ends of the members which rest on the floor to prevent he steps from slipping.
By these means, I provide supplementary toilet seat for young children to assist in the training of them in proper habits, Which at the same time is perfectly safe in that there is no danger of them falling off due to the arms and back. 7
Also, the parts all being hinged provides a foldable seat, which is also adjustable to Varying heights of adult toilet seats.
I claim:
1. A foldable combined ladder and auxiliary toilet seat, comprisinga ladder havinga 10 series of steps, an auxiliary toilet seat hinged at its front end to theupper end of said ladder, the sides of the ladder extending above said toilet seat, a back hinged to the rear I end of said toilet seat, arms pivotally selb cured at their opposite ends tothe upper ends of the sides of the ladder and the sides of said back and the oints connecting the parts being adapted to permit the folding --of the toilet seat and the back thereof "in parallel relation, one over the other, against the rear side of the ladder. s
2. A foldable combined ladder and auxiliary toilet seat, comprising a ladder having a series of steps, an auxiliary toilet seat hinged at its front end to the upper end of said ladder, the sides of the ladder extending above said toilet seat, angle irons secured to the lower end of the back, the free end of such angle irons provided with an eye, a staple inserted through such eye and secured in the front end of the toilet seat, arms pivotally secured at'their opposite ends to the upper ends of the sides of the ladder and the sides of said back and the joints and angle irons connecting the parts being adapted to permit the folding of the toilet seat and the back thereof in parallel relation, one over the other, against the rear side of the ladder.
