Description

Dec. 10, 1935. RALLY 2,023,900
LIP SHIELD Filed Oct. 24, 1931 INVENTOR. F 5 5 JEANNE Y. RALLY ATTORNEY Patented Dec. 10, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to a lip shield.
It has been found that at the present time when it is a prevalent custom for women to rouge their lips and to thereafter dress or try on dresses of designs which necessitate that they should he slipped over the head of the wearer, the dresses are often soiled by the rouge. This is especially true in women's apparel stores where ready-to-wear dresses are offered for sale and are tried on by the general buying public. As a result it has been found that large items of over-head are incurred by the proprietors of these establishments due to the expense of dry cleaning these dresses before they may be sold, and in some instances an additional loss when it is necessary to lower the sales price of the dress after cleaning. It has also been found that in theatrical work and motion picture production the costumes are often soiled by lip rouge incident to the putting on and taking off of the costumes, and that the make-up of the lips is in some instances spoiled as the cloth of the dress brushes across the lips.
It is the principal object of the present invention, therefore, to provide a simple sanitary lip shield which is decidedly inexpensive, making if feasible to individually provide lip shields which may be discarded after use and which device may be easily placed over the mouth of a person and temporarily held either by pressure of the lips or the teeth, to cover the lips, protecting the rouge upon them and preventing the rouge from being smeared upon articles of wearing apparel which are slipped over the head of the wearer.
The present invention contemplates the provision of a shield member preferably formed of thin fibrous material, such as paper or the like, and which shield member is molded to cover the lips of the wearer and is provided with a bite portion by which the shield may be temporarily held in position.
The invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawing, in which:-
Figure 1 is a view showing the application of the invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged view in perspective show-- ing the front of the lip shield.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged view in perspective showing the rear of the lip shield.
Fig. 4 is a view in transverse section through the lip shield as seen on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a view showing the blank from which the shield is made.
Fig. 6 is a view in front elevation showing a modified form 01 the shield.
Fig. '7 is a view in transverse section through another modification of the shield in which a breathing duct is provided.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, l indicates the blank from which a lip shield II is made. This blank as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawing is substantially circular and is folded along a central fold line I2 indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 5, and which extends diametrically across the blank. Arcuate fold lines l3 and I4 are 10 formed upon opposite sides of the central fold l2 and intersect each other and the center fold line l2 at the circumferential edge of the blank and upon diametrically opposite sides of the vertical median line thereof. 5
It is desirable that the blank shall be molded so that it will substantially conform to the contour of the lips and mouth of a wearer. The blank when molded will have a vertical sectional formation substantially as indicated in Fig. 4 of the drawing, where it will be seen that the arcuate segments l5 and I6 occurring upon opposite sides of the center fold line l2 will be folded upon each other to form a substantially rigid bite l'l which extends horizontally of the lip shield and can be held by the lips when inserted between them or if of greater length can be gripped by the teeth.
Upon opposite sides of the bite I! the blank will form convexed segments 18 and I9 which will cover the upper and lower lips of the wearer.
The exact diameter of the blank from which the structure is made is not material as it may be increased to any size suitable for satisfactorily covering cosmetics on the face and to be held by the lips or the teeth of the wearer. Such a structure is indicated in Fig. 6 of the drawing where the blank is made with additional wings 20 and 2| which extend upwardly at opposite sides of the nose and cover rouge on the face. It may also be desirable to provide the shield with ventilation perforations 22 to prevent perspiration on the lips and to facilitate in breathing.
In Fig. 7 of the drawing a modification of the device is shown in which a convexed lip shield member 23 is provided and from which a breathing tube 24 extends. This tube having a central opening through it which also passes throughthe shield 23 and makes it possible to hold the shield in position by the tube and to prevent breathing discomfort to those who might have difficulty in breathing with their lips closed.
The lip shields as shown in the present drawing may be made of any desirable material such as card board, metal, celluloid or rubber. It is,
however, most desirable from a practicalstandpoint to form the shields of heavy paper properly treated, which would be light-in weight and inexpensive, so that in ladies apparel shops it would be desirable to make a supply of shields available in the same manner as paper drinking cups are now provided, so that these shields could be discarded by an individual after they have been worn.
It will also be understood that material may be properly treated so that there will not be any objectionable scent or taste to the shield.
It will thus be seen that the device here disclosed is decidedly simple in its construction and mode of application, and will effectively. shield the race of the wearer and protect the makeup thereon as well as protect garments from this make-up when the device is used while trying on or taking 011 garments.
While I have shown the preferred form of my invention, as now known to me, it will be understood that various changes may be made in combination, construction, and arrangement of parts by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of my invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
A lip cover to prevent smearing 0r garments with lip cosmetics and consisting of a blank 0! light material formed to provide a member adapted to be held in the mouth or between the teeth of the user, and a pair of lip protecting members attached to said holdable member and adapted to be disposed one each before one of the users lips for precluding contact of garments with the lips, particularly when the garments are passed 15 over the users head, the lip protecting members being *of generally curved cross sectional outline with the edge portions extending towards the wearers face to effectively coverthe lips and to preclude catching of garment parts on said 9;
members.
