Description

v. c. GROTE,
APPLICATOR L Filed Dec. 10, 1934 Patented Dec. 10, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in an article of manufacture and particularly to an article in packaged form for stopping runs in hosiery.
In hosiery, particularly silk and lisle, whenever a tear is made therein, usually the slightest tension or stretching of the stocking will cause a run therein. Heretofore it has sometimes been customary to apply a liquid solution, usually carried in a bottle or a like container, to the stocking around the hole caused by the tear, or if a run has already started, it is applied to the bottom and top of the run, to keep it from running further.
The main objects of this invention are to provide an article of manufacture in packaged form,
for stopping runs in hosiery; to provide a smallpacket of convenient size and shape and ready for instantaneous use; to provide-a packet containing a plurality of individual applicators hav ing a substance on one end thereof, which when moistened, will stop runs in hosiery, when applied thereto; and to provide an article of manufacture which is simple in construction and operation, and inexpensive to manufacture.
An illustrative embodiment of this invention is shown in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device showing the cover in opened position and exposing the individual applicators.
Fig. 2 is an edge view of the packet with the cover shown in closed position.
Fig. 3 is a front view of the same shown partly in section.
Referring in detail to the drawing the packet comprises a one piece protective covering of cardboard or like material, having a front cover I, a back 2 and a flap 3.
A strip of unitary material 4 such as heavy cardboard or the like, is secured, within the covering between the back 2 and flap 3, and is fastened thereto by means of a staple 5 which extends through the flap 3 and the back 2 to hold the strip of material 4 in position within the covering.
The unitary strip of material 4 is divided into individual applicators 6 by being cleft endwise of one end before insertion into the covering. The strip is punched as at 1 adjacent the fastened end, so as to establish the breaking point and permit the ready removal of the individual applicators. Each of the individual applicators is provided with a substance 8 which is soluble gum or the like forming a head on the applicator, which head when moistened will become an adhesive, and when applied to a hole or tear in a stocking will prevent the hole or tear from running or if a run has already-started prevent it from running further.
It can readily be seen that two or more such unitary strips 4 may be used in one packet, and that the front, back and inside of the protective covering may be used, ideally, for advertising or the like and as the packet is inexpensive to manufacture it may be given away as an advertising medium.
It is to be further understood that this use of the packet is not to be limited to its use on hosiery but may be applied to almost any material where runs are present.
Although but one specific embodiment of this invention is herein shown and described, it will be understood that details of the construction shown may be altered or omitted without departing from the spirit of this invention as defined by the following claim:
I claim:
As an article of manufacture, a unitary strip of material cleft endwise to form a series of individual applicators, a soluble adhesive substance on one end of each of the individual applicators adapted to adhere to hosiery and stop runs in hosiery when moistened and applied to the hosiery and a protective covering for housing said strip and applicators.
