Objects of the present invention are to effect an economy in the production of leather Welting for Goodyear shoes; to provide for producing from a single strip of leather of rectangular cross section two Goodyear Welt strips of greater aggregate over all width than the width of said strip, thereby effecting a saving in stock, and to provide when the rectangular portions are filled in as hereinafter described two pieces of Goodyear Welting having all the essentials of regular Goodyear stock, except that one piece is colored and finished on the grain side and the other on the esh side to simulate a grain nsh.
To this and other ends hereinafter set forth or appearing the invention, generally stated, comprises a split leather Welt generally rectangular in cross section and having a. marginal bead also rectangular in cross section, and a strip lling the space provided adjacent the bead and the face of the Welt and secured to the face of the Welt, said Welt having a stitch groove of which one Wall is provided by the bead and the other Wall is provided by the strip.
The invention alsoI comprises the improvements to be presently described and nally claimed.
In the following description reference Will be made to the accompanying drawing forming part hereof and in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective View of a Goodyear Welt embodying features of the invention.
Figure 2 is a cross sectional View illustrating the derivation of a part of the Welt shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a view illustrative of a stage in the manufacture, and
Figure 4 is a cross sectional view of Figure 1. Referring to the drawing, l is a leather Welt generally rectangular in cross section and hav- 5 ing a marginal bead 2 also generally rectangular in cross section. This leather Welt can be made by cutting or splitting a strip a of leather along the line b Which produces two such Welts. 3 is a strip filling the space provided by the bead and it is permanently secured to the face of the Welt. The strip 3 may consist of leather or other substances and it may be cemented or glued to the Welt l. There is a stitch groove d of which 15 one Wall is provided by the bead 2 and of which the other Wall is provided by the strip 3.
The composite Goodyear Welt is for all essential purposes of shoe making a regular Goodyear Welt. 20
I claim:
For use in making Goodyear Welt shoes, a tWopiece leather Welt generally rectangular in cross section and having a marginal bead also generally rectangular in cross section, in combination 25 with a strip filling the space provided adjacent the bead and the face of the Welt and secured to the face of the welt, said Welt provided With a stitch groove ofwhich one Wall is provided by the bead and the other Wall is provided by the 30 strip, the Welt being for all essential purposes a regular Goodyear Welt.
