Abstract
401,606. Shoe welting. BARBOUR, P. E., 176, Adams Street, Quincy, Massachusetts, U.S.A.-(Assignee of Vizard, W. C. ; 179, Green Street, Brockton, Massachusetts, U.S.A.) May 23, 1933, No. 14890. Convention date, Feb. 3, 1932. [Class 17 (ii).] A beaded welt comprises a flap slit from one face of the body stock and turned to stand up therefrom and a relatively stiff right angular section integral with the edge of the flap and pressed against the flap to anchor it in upstanding position. A fillet 10 of double width is first cut by removing a strip 12 centrally from the grain side. This strip may be used for stitchdown welting. A following cutter makes a central longitudinal cut into the web 24 to divide the fillet into two parts 16. Each strand 16 is then cut longitudinally as shown at 25 in Fig. 2 by a right angular blade to form a bead body 20 and a grain flap or bead cover 22. A sewing groove 26 is also formed at this stage. The bead 20 is then lifted and the inner faces of the parts 22, 24 and shelf 30 are coated with cement. The bead 20 is forced down on to the shelf 30 and is then consolidated by moulding rolls which force the flange 24 into the corner 33 and shape the bead as desired. The bead may be ornamented e.g. by making a chain stitch seam on the grain side of the bead cover 22 before cementing, or in the manner described in Specification 237,496, [Class 17 (ii), Boots and shoes, Construction of].
