This invention relates to an improved tailors chalk Sharpener, and has for one of its principal objects the provision of means whereby pieces of chalk, such as those ordinarily used by tailors and which are relatively flat and wide, can be conveniently sharpened along their marginal edges with a minimum expenditure of time and trouble.
' One of the important objects of this invention is to provide a tailors chalk Sharpener which comprises, in a unitary device, means for posi tively and accurately sharpening tailors chalk or the like, and which will, at the same time, automatically collect the shavings or waste material scraped from the chalk in the sharpening operation.
Another important object of the invention is to provide, in a tailors chalk Sharpener, means for automatically positioning the chalk in the sharpener so that the proper sharpening operation will automatically take place, thereby eliminating waste and also producing a better result'in less time.
A still further important object of the invention is to provide a chalk Sharpener of the class described which shall be compact, simple of operation, and which can be easily hung on the wall or other convenient position for use and which, furthermore, can be readily detached from said wall whenever desired for the purpose of emptying the same of accumulated shavings or scrapings.
Other and further important objects of the invention will be apparent from the disclosures i in the accompanying drawing and following specification.
The invention, in a preferred form, is illustrated in the drawing and hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improved tailors chalk Sharpener of this invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical section of the same taken on the line 2 2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the device.
As shown in the drawing:
The reference numeral I0 indicates generally the casing of the improved tailors chalk sharpener of this invention, the same preferably comprising a housing which can be made of metal, cardboard, wood or some composition, and which is preferably in the form of an elongated rectangular parallelopipedon as shown. One of the walls is preferably provided with an extension I2 through which is an opening I4 whereby the same may be readily hung on a wall or the like.
The front face of the casing I0 is provided with 5 a vertical slot I6 extending from a point approximately one-fourth of the distance from the bottom up to the top thereof, this slot being of a width sufficient to allow of the insertion of the edges of an ordinary piece of chalk such as used 10 by tailors for marking clothes or the like. The slot I6 is provided with an angular in-turned wall I8 (Figure 3) which wall preferably comprises an integral extension of the front and other walls of the casing I0. This in-turned wall 15 extends to the rearward inner corner of the casing lil, thereby being pressed in desired position.
Mounted in the angularly in -turned wall E8 at a point approximately one-half way the length of the slot I6 is a cutting blade or the like 20 which 20 is positioned in a substantially horizontal plane as illustrated and which passes through the wall I8 and into the mounting or support 22 as best shown in Figures 2 and 3.
The inwardly turned wall I8 is cut off at a 25 slight angle at its lower end as best shown at 24 in Figures l and 2, and the space below the lower end of this wall is for collecting accumulated scrapings or shavings which will drop to the bottom of the casing in the chalk sharpening opera- 30 tion.
In order to empty this powdered chalk, the device is removed from its support and inverted, whereupon the shavings will drop past the support 22 for the blade 20 and will pass outwardly 35 through a slot 26 formed in the cover 28 of the housing as best shown in Figures 2 and 4.
It will be evident that herein is provided a simple, compact, yet quite efficient device for sharpening tailors chalk or the like which shall 40 be extremely simple of operation, economical to manufacture and which will eliminate the trouble and mussiness ordinarily attendant upon the sharpening oi such chalk. This sharpening op" eration has, in the past, been accomplished by means oi a pocket knife or the like, and the scrapings either allowed to fall to the floor or otherwise so manipulated as to be dropped into an-open box orv some other similar receptacle, all 50 of which caused considerable annoyance, and the sharpening operation itself was subject to many disadvantages, the chief of which are inaccuracies and waste. By the use of this invention, the proper edge is immediately placed on the chalk, 55
the scrapings are automatically collected and can be readily disposed of When convenient.
I am aware that many changes may be made and numerous details of construction Varied throughout a Wide range Without departing from the principles of this invention, and I, therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted hereon otherwise than as necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
A chalk Sharpener, including a casing having a slot in its face, and a sharpening blade positioned behind the slot, one of the outer Walls of the casing being in-turned at an angle adjacent the slot to form a further wall therefor, and also providing a support and proper angular positioning means for the sharpening blade, and additional supporting means for the blade in said Wall, together with means at the bottom of the casing for collecting scrapings and shavings, and additional means for emptwng said scrapings from the casing, said last-named means includ- 10 ing a slot in the top of the casing.
