Description
Patented Mar. 28, 1939 PATENT OFFICE TAILORS CHALK SHARPENE-R WITH RE- PLACEABLE. BLADE Vincent Rago, Chicago, Ill.
Application September 29, 1937, Serial No. 166,349
3 Claims.
This invention relates to an improved tailors chalk sharpener with replaceable blade, and the present invention constitutes an improvement H over my previous Patent No. 2,022,299 on Tailors chalk sharpener dated November 26, 1935, and also my patent on Tailors chalk sharpener, 0. dated September 28, 1937.
One of the principal objects of this invention is to provide an improved chalk sharpener of this type wherein the shavings scraped off by the sharpening blade will drop automatically into the bottom of the attached container which also constitutes a blade support.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a raised rim around the back and sides of the sharpener to insure against any of the shavings getting out or falling on the clothing being marked.
A still further object is the provision of means whereby the sharpening blade comprises and can be replaced by practically any standard make of razor blade.
Another important object of the invention is the provision of adjusting means for the blade holder whereby the chalk sharpening effect can be varied as desired.
Another and still further important object of the invention is to provide a tailors chalk sharpener which is simple yet effective in operation,
and a device that can be positioned in any con venient place.
Other and further important objects of the invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the accompanying drawing and following speci fication.
The invention, in a preferred form, is shown in the drawing and hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved tailors chalk sharpener of this invention.
Figure 2 is a detail bottom View of the blade holder and adjacent framework.
Figure 3 is a front detail view of the assembled blade holder and blade.
Figure 4 is a side view of the structure of Figure 3.
Figure 5 shows the blade holder with one part removed and with the blade positioned on a pair of supporting pins.
Figure 6 is a side view of the structure of Figure 5 and showing the same positioned in its framework and also illustrating details of the blade adjusting elements.
Figure 7 is a sectional view showing one end support for the framework of Figures 2 and 6, and illustrating adjacent portions of the casing.
As shown in the drawing:
The reference numeral I0 indicates generally the casing of the sharpener which acts as a con- 5 tainer for shavings and which is also the support for the blade holder framework. The casingis preferably made of sheet metal, but can be made of any suitable material such as a synthetic resin, wood or cardboard cut to shape and then folded 10 into the box-like form illustrated.
The ends of the box are provided with inner abutments I2 which are either integral, welded or glued in position depending on the material of the casing. On these abutments l2 rests the 15 bridge-like structure or open framework it which,
in turn, has the blade holder composed of two parts l6 and I8 adjustably positioned in it. Between these two parts It and ill of the blade holder, the blade 29 is held firmly. The effective 20 height of the blade holder can be adjusted by means of the screws 22 which are threaded into part l6 of the holder and work in the slots 26. The blade holder part I6 is maintained in proper upright position in the framework by means of 5 two sets of parallel ridges 24 preferably formed integral with the framework and on opposed inside faces thereof, as best shown in Figure 2.
Opposed grooves 2'! are provided in the holder parts I6 and l 8 for a more positive gripping of the 30 blade 20'.
The bridge or framework may be of metal, wood or composition or combinations thereof and may be of one or more parts.
A new blade can be inserted in the holder when- 5 ever desired by removing the screw 28 which allows the plate It to be taken off. The blade fits over the projecting pins 39, and the plate I8 is then replaced in proper position, and the screw 26 is reset. The pins and screw holes are arranged 40 to fit ordinary razor blades. The bridge 14 is held firmly to the abutments I2 by screws 32. Positioned on the bridge adjacent both sides of the blade 20 are platforms 34 of suitable material to which the chalk will not adhere. 45
The dull chalk is held by its ends in one hand, and at the desired angle is moved back and forth over the edge of the blade, which projects slightly above the level of the platforms 34, approximately one sixty-fourth of an inch. The platforms also 50 serve as a level for properly aligning and tapering the effective sharpened edge of the chalk.
The platforms do not extend to the ends of the framework and neither do they extend up to the blade, thereby leaving openings for the shavings 55 to fall through. The raised rim 36 around the sides and back of the casing l0 prevents the shavings from flying outside the box, and the cutaway portion in the front allows sufficient space for the hands of the operator.
It will be evident that herein is provided a tailors chalk sharpener which constitutes a distinct improvement over prior devices in that a better support and more capacious and efiicient receptacle are provided, and additionally, a deflnite adjustment for the cutting or sharpening blade is readily available to the operator. Furthermore, the device can be economically constructed, is not cumbersome, and efiectively prevents spillage and consequent disorder.
I am aware that many changes may be made and numerous details of construction varied throughout a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I, therefore, do not purpose limiting the patent granted hereon otherwise than as necessitated by the prior art and appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A chalk sharpener, including an open-top casing, a framework therein bridged from one end of the casing to the other, a sharpening blade positioned in the center of said framework, operating platforms adjacent the blade, said platforms being foreshortened to leave openings in and around the blade and framework for automatically dropping scrapings to the bottom of the casing.
2. A chalk sharpener, including an open-top casing, a framework therein bridged from one end of the casing to the other, a sharpening blade positioned in the center of said framework, operating platforms adjacent the blade, said platforms being foreshortened to leave openings in and around the blade and framework for automatically dropping scrapings to the bottom of the casing, and means for adjusting the efiective height of the blade with regard to the platforms and framework, said means comprising a support for the blade, parallel ridges in the framework for receiving the blade support and adjusting screws and slots in the support and framework, respectively.
3. A chalk sharpener, including an open-top casing, a framework therein bridged from one end of the casing to the other, a sharpening blade of standard razor blade type positioned in the center of said framework, operating platforms adjacent the blade, said platforms being foreshortened to leave openings in and around the blade and framework for automatically dropping scrapings to the bottom of the casing, and means for adjusting the effective height of the blade with regard to the platforms and framework, said means comprising a'support for the blade, parallel ridges in the framework for receiving the blade support and adjusting screws and slots in the support and framework, respectively, and means for positioning said standard razor blade in said support.
