Description

Nov. 5, 1935. OLJACO'BSEN I 2,019,679
CENTRIfUGAP PUMP Filed July 1 2,, 19:55 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 INVENTOR. crsrsuv dncossc'u' HATTORNEK'I- Patented Nov. 5, 1 935 umrao MATES CENTRIFUGAL PURE Oystein .llacobsen, Dayton, Ohio, assignor to The Duriron (Company, Ina, a corporation of New York Application July 12, 1935, Serial No. sees? @Jlaims. (Gl.13--iiii3) m to the pressure developed in the volute and resulting from the operation ofthe pump. One embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a vertical section through the pump.
Fig. 2 is'an elevation of one side of the pump. And Fig. 3 is a partial elevation of the other side of the pump.
Referring to the drawings, l and 2 are parts of the pump casing, the part i being provided with the volute 3, and the part 2 having the inlet connection t leading to the eye of the pump. Mounted in the casing is the runner or impeller 5 having the usualradial passages 6 discharging to the volute, the runner being driven by the shaft 1 which carries .at its other end a pulley (not shown) or other suitable driving means. The volute discharges at 8 into the outlet passage 9 which is connected with the usual discharge pipe (not shown). The base casting it of the pump is provided at its right hand end with a base plate ll integral with such casting and having at its edge the flange it which fits around-a ring or flange l3 carried by the part i of the pump casing. The base plate M is provided with the vertical slot M which may be from one-eighth to one-quarter inch in width, and extends down to the circular opening through which the stuffing box and shaft project.
When the bolt is tightened, the spring in the base plate, incident to the use of the slot M, permits the flange l2 to apply compressive force on'the ring l3, so that the casing part l carrying the 45 volute is reinforced against breaking strain incident to pressure generated in the volute by the -55 flange of the base plate ii and a clamping ring Provision is made for clamping the base 40 plate onto the ring 63 by the use of the bolt it.
it, which engages the face of the part 2. The casing part i carrying the volute is thus placed under compression in two directions by the action .of the bolts 85 and ll, ll, ll, etc. and danger of fracture incident to pressure generated in the d volute is reduced to a minimum, even in those cases in which the alloy of which the casing parts are formed is relatively weak and brittle. The danger of breaking the pump in handling is also reduced to a minimum by the expedient as above it) set forth.
What I claim is:
1. In combination in a centrifugal pump, a casing having an inlet eye at its center and a volute around its periphery, a runner mounted in the i5 casing provided with a drive shaft, 2. ring rigid with the casing projecting laterally from one side thereof adjacent the periphery of the casing and the volute, a supporting base for the pump provided with a slotted base plate having a flange 2o fitting around said ring, and clamping means for partially closing the slot in the base' plate to cause the flange thereof to apply compressive force upon said ring and to the entireside wall of the casing inward ofthe volute.
2. In combination in a centrifugal pump, a casing havingan inlet eye at its center and a volute around its periphery, a runner mounted in the casing provided. with a drive shaft, 2. ring rigid with the casing projecting laterally from one side 3 thereof adjacent the periphery of the casing and the volute, a supporting base for the pump provided with a slotted. base plate having a flange, fitting around said ring, and a clamping boll extending transversely of the slot in the base plate 35 and adapted to partially close said slot to cause the flange thereof to apply compressive force upon said ring.
3. In combination in a centrifugal pump, a casing comprising a part having a volute around the 40 outer portion, and a cover plate provided at its center with an inlet, a runner mounted in the casing provided with a drive shaft, a ring rigid with the casing part projecting laterally from one side thereof adjacent the periphery of the casing and said volute, a supporting base for the pump provided with a slotted base plate having a flange fitting around said ring, clamping means for partially closing the slot in the base plate to cause the flange thereof to apply compressive force upon said ring, a clamping ring engaging the outer face of the cover plate, and bolts extending from the periphery of the clamping plate to the flange of the base plate outside the periphery of the casing for applying compressive force to the casing in a lateral direction and clamping the casing parts in assembled relation.
I m pump provided with a slotted base plate having a flange fitting around said ring, a clamping bolt extending transversely of the slot in the base plate and adapted to partially close said slot to cause the flange thereof to apply compressive force 5 upon said ring, and a set of clamping bolts in parallel withthe axis of the pump for clamping the base plate to the casing.
5.11; combination in a centrifugal pump, a
casing having an inlet'eye at its center and a volute around its periphery, a runner mounted in the casing provided with a. drive shaft, a. ring rigid with the casing projecting laterally from one side thereof adjacent the periphery of the casing and the volute, a supporting base for the pump provided with a slotted base plate having a flange fitting around said ring, a clamping bolt extending transversely of the slotln the base plate and adapted to partially close said slot to cause the 10 flange thereof to apply compressive force upon said ring, a handling link on said bolt, and a. set of clamping bolts in parallel with the axis of the pump for clamping the base plate to the casing I and for applying compressive force to the casing-15 in a lateral direction,
