IMPROVEMENT IN HAVERSACKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 201,537, dated March 19, 1878; application filed November 7, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JosEPE H. LAii/nsEET, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Combined Clothes -Bags and Haversacks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon.

Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a vertical cross-section of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section thereof.

This invention has for its object the improvement of haversacks for tourists and soldiers. The object of the invention is to devise a sack of such a construction that it will form a convenient receptacle for clothes, provisions, knife and fork, and other articles.

The nature of the invention consists in certain combinations of parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth.

In the annexed drawings, the letter A designates my improved clothes-bag and haversack, made of canvas or other usual fabric. The clothes-bag B is formed by sewing a piece of material, a, to the edge of a piece, b, which is of sufficient length to form the outside portion both of the clothes-bag and provisionreceptacle C, the said piece, a having been folded over upon itself and stitched through, inside of the fold,to form the ends and bottom of the sack, as 4shown at o.

That portion bl of the piece b which forms the outside of the provision-receptacle is of less width than the outside of the sack B, the two parts being connected by an intermediate fold, b2, that covers both the sacks aforesaid. The bag Bis closed by a ilap, C', rigidly sewed to the fold b2, and secured to the piece a by means of a strap, d, having spaced buttonholes formed therein, secured to the ilap, and

a button, d', secured in any suitable manner to the part a aforesaid.

The sack C is of the general form of a rectangle, and is formed by means of a continuous strip of material, e, of rectangular form, stitched to the lateral and bottom edges of the portion b1, and a square of material, e',

stitched tothe outer edges of the gussetstrip e. Upon the inside of the sack C receptacles f are made by sewing the strips of materialv g to the inside of the gussets e, in which a knife and fork are designed to be placed.

Exterior to the sack C is a pocket, h, formed by sewing a square of material, h1, to theoutside of sack G-that is, to the square c-a sin! gle seam, h2, serving to secure the squares e h1 to the gusset-strip e. This pocket h is designed to receive a plate or other like article, provisions being stowed in the sack C.

Exterior to the pocket h a second pocket, l, is made by folding a piece of material, m, over upon itself and running a seam, t', around three sides, inside of the fold. The edges-of the folded portion are then sewed to the square hl, forming a wide receptacle adapted to receive a frylpan having raised sides.

The pocket l is prevented from sagging by means of a strap, s, and button, respectively, on the pocket h and the outside of the pocket l.

The edges of the outside b of the bag B and sack C are bound with leather or other suitable material, a, for protecting the outside seams.

It will be seen that I have constructed a device combining the advantages of' a light knapsack andfhaversack, having appropriate places for clothing, provisions, and table and kitchen furniture in quantity suflicient for tourists or soldiers in light marching order, the whole being protected by the fold b2 aforesaid.

When suitably packed, the haversack and clothesbag are united at their lower portions by a buckle and strap at each end.

This device is suspended over the shoulder across the body by means of an adjustable strap, p.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is e 1 The combined clothes-bag and haversack, consisting of the clothes-bag B and the provision-sack C, united by the fold b2, and provided with inside sheaths f, an exterior pocket, h, for a plate, and a pocket, Z, gusseted to the out-side thereof, as and for the purpose specified.
