Description

DEVICE FOR CURLING HAIR 7 Filed Oct. 18, 1934 Patented Sept. 24, 1935 UNITED STATES oFFicE 14 Claims.
' My invention relates to'hair curlers and refers particularly to hair curlers adapted for the winding, of hair thereon and to be retained in position upon the head until a curl, or wave, is produced thereon.
The device of my invention is so constructed that the ends of the hair are firmly clasped thereon to allow of the winding of the entire hair strand around it, coupled with means for maintaining the hair in wound position and means for preventingthe accidental dislodgment of the device from the wound hair. r
The advantages of my device will be evident upon a consideration of my specification and its accompanying drawing, in which similar parts are designated by similar numerals.
Figure 1 is a top plan of one form of my device.
Figure 2 is a side view of the device of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a bottom view of the device of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is an enlarged section on the line 4-4 of Figure 1. I
Figure 5 is a section on the line 5-5.of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a section on the line 6 6 of Figure 4.
Figure 7 is a perspective view of the retaining member and spring member of the device shown in Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4.
.Figure 8 is a perspective View of the inner terminal of the clamping member.
Figure 9 is a perspective view of the two extended fixed arms of the device.
Figure 10 is a section similar to Figure 6 taken through a modified form of my device. 7
The particular form of my device shown in Figures 1 to 9, inclusive consists of a base or supporting member,- having the cylindrical side 15 and the end cover It; The upper face of the base has an elongated slot l1 and the under face thereof having anelongated slot [8.
A locking member i9 is pivotally attached to the base side it: by means of a pivot 20 and is capable of placement within the slot I8. The free end 21 of the locking member I9is turned upon itself to form a hook-like terminal which is passed through the slot 22 of the slidable sleeve 23.
Positioned within the open end ofthe base is a retaining member 24, having the recesses 25, 26
- and 2'! and the aligned openings 28, 28.
' hair around the arms 29, 39 and 3|.
the retaining member 24, and is pivotally attached thereto by the pin 33 passed through the holes 23, 28 and holes in two downwardly extended ears 3d, 34 of the arm 3!.
V A resilient spring member 35 having the recess 5 35 and the upwardly extended terminal 31 is frictionally held within the retaining member 24 by inserting the arms 38, 38 within the recesses 25 and 26. The terminal 31 of the spring is so positioned that in normal position it presses upwardly 10 against the end 32 of the clamping arm M with such force as to cause the arm 3i to have a pressure abutment against the upper faces of the arms 29 and 35 as shown particularly, by the full lines in Figure 4. 15
The pressure abutment between the clamping arm and the fixed arms may be accomplished by other constructions, and by the use of other forms of springs such as coil springs.
The operation of my device is as follows:-- 20 The sleeve 23 is moved outwardly and the arm 19, is shown in 19 in Figure 2. Pressure is then exerted upon the member 32 causing the clamping arm 3i to assume the position 3!- as shown in Figures 2 and 4. A strand of hair is then given 25 a few turns around the arms 29 and 30 and the pressure released from the member 32, thus allowing the arm 3! to abut upon the thus wound hair with sufficient force to hold it in place. The entire device is now revolved thus winding the 30 When the entire strand is thus wound or wrapped around the arms, lower arm. I 9 is moved into the position shown in Figure 4, and the sleeve 23 moved inwardly into the position shown in Figures 1, 2 3 5 and 3. The sleeve thus acts to force the arm I9 against the wound hair, holding it in compressed condition free from unwrapping and at the same time prevents the device from slipping from its operativeposition. 7 v
The modified form of my device shown in Figure 10 is the same as that previously described except that the two arms 29 and 3!! are replaced by a single arm 39 passing through a centrally positioned slot in the retaining member 26 and 4 5 ticularly disclosed and described as these are given simply as a means for clearly describing the device of my invention.
