Description

Patented Sept. 17, 1935 U N 'l' Zlg.
ATNT GFFICE Claims.
My invention relates to a swab holding device for use on mops.
Among the objects of my invention are to create a swab holding device in which the swab is 5 pinched between the holder and the handle of a mop so as to prevent the swab from sliding in the swab holder; to provide a swab holding device in which the swab holder is pivotally mounted through the handle and xed thereon against loss;
v to so create a swab holding device pivotally mounted through the handle of a mop that the swab may be more easily removed or replaced; to provide an adjustable locking means whereby any variation in the handle caused b-y expansion, conl5 traction or other factors may be met and the rigidity of the structure maintained; and such other objects, advantages and capabilities as will later more fully appear and which are inherently possessed by my invention.
20 While I have shown in the accompanying drawing a preferred embodiment of my invention yet I wish it understood that the same is susceptible yof modication and change without departing from the spirit of my invention.
25 Referring more particularly to the drawing: Fig. 1 is a front elevational View; Fig. 2 is a side elevational View of my invention in open position; Fig. 3 is a plan sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
30 The preferred form chosen to illustrate my invention comprises a handle I and a swab holder II for removably holding a swab I2.
My swab holder II is preferably constructed of a single piece of wire and is pivotally mounted 35 through the handle I 0 by `anchoring portion I3. At substantially right angles to the anchoring portion I3 my swab holder II has a long leg ii running substantially `parallel to the handle It of the mop when my mop holding device is in closed 40 position. Adjacent the end I5 of the handle It my swab holder II forms a loop- It and then continues to form a second leg II shorter in length than the other leg It so that when the swab holder I I is swung out of its closed position 45 at substantially right angles to the handle the shorter leg Il will form an opening I3 between it and the handle Ill suflicient for the insertion or withdrawal of the swab I2. I prefer that the lower portion I9 of the handle I0 have cutout 50 portions 2|] and 2| in which the legs I4 and I'I lie when the swab holder II is in closed position. Said cutout portions 20 and 2l being preferably substantially the same depth as the thickness of the legs I4 and I1 so that when the swab holder 55 Il is in closed position the legs I4 and I'I lie for the legs I4 and Il on that side of the handle 5 I0 where the pressure comes when the mop is in use.
The fulcrum point I3 is spaced from the end of the handle so that when the swab holder l I is closed the gap or opening 25 between the end of 10 the handle Iii and the loop I6 is slightly less than the thickness of the swab I2 to produce a pinching effect thereon. I preferably construct the bottom end I5 of the handle It with a convex surface 25 so as to permit free passage of the swab 15 until the maximum pinching point is reached.
A ring 2l slidable on the handle E0 is adapted to slide over the legs I4 and Il of the swab holder II so as to keep the swab holder in closed fixed position.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
l. A swab holding device comprising an elongated handle, and a swab holder having a loop extending beyond and across the end of said handle, said loop continuing to form a pair of legs extending substantially parallel along the opposite sides of said handle when the swab holder is in closed position, one of said legs bent substantially at a right angle and extending transversely through said handle to form a pivot therein, the other of said legs having a free end so that upon the swab holder being swung away from the axis of said handle, a swab may be inserted or withdrawn to or from said loop.
2. A swab holding device comprising an elongated handle, and a swab holder having a loop extending beyond and across the end of said handle, said handle having a pair of oppositely disposed cutout portions beginning above the pivot of the swab holder and continuing to the end of the handle, said cut out portions forining ledges, said loop continuing to form a pair of legs extending substantially parallel along the opposite sides of said handle and lying within said cutout portions and against said ledges when the swab holder is in closed position, one of said legs bent substantially at a right angle and extending transversely through said handle to form a pivot therein, the other of said legs having a free end so that upon the swab holder being swung away from the axis of said handle, a swab may be inserted or withdrawn into or from said loop.
3. A swab holding device comprising an elongated handle, and a swab holder having a loop extending beyond and across the end of said handle, said handle having a pair of oppositely disposed cutout portions beginning above the pivot of the swab holder and continuing to the end of the handle, said cut out portions forming ledges, said loop continuing to form a pair of legs extending substantially parallel along the opposite sides of said handle and lying within said cut out portions and against said ledges when the swab holder is in closed position, one of said legs bent substantially at a right angle and extending transversely through said handle to form a pivot therein, the other of said legs having a free end so that upon the swab holder being swung away from the axis of said handle, a swab may be inserted or withdrawn into or from said loop, said loop spaced from the end of said handle so that the gap therebetween is slightly less than the thickness of the inserted swab for producing a pinching eiect thereon.
4. A swab holding device comprising an elongated handle, and a swab holder having a loop extending beyond and across the end of said handle, said handle having a pair of oppositely disposed cutout portions beginning above the pivot of the swab holder and continuing to the end of the handle, said cutout portions forming ledges, said loop continuing to form a pair of legs extending substantially parallel along the opposite sides of said handle and lyin(T within said cutout portions and against said ledges when the swab holder is in closed position, one of said legs bent substantially at a right angle and extending transversely through said handle to form a pivot therein, the other of said legs having a free end so that upon the swab holder being swung away from the axis of said handle, a swab may be inserted or withdrawn into or from said loop, and a ring slidable on the handle, and adapted to slide over the legs when the same are lying within the cutout portions and against the ledges so as to lock the swab holder in closed position.
5. A swab holding device comprising an elongated handle, and a swab holder having a loop extending beyond and across the end of said handle, said handle having a pair of oppositiely disposed cutout portions beginning above the pivot of the swab holder and continuing to the end of the handle, said cutout portions forming ledges, said loop continuing to form a pair of legs extending substantially parallel along the opposite sides of said handle and lying within said cutout portions and against said ledges when the swab holder is in closed position, one of said legs bent substantially at a right angle and extending transversely through said handle to form a pivot therein, the other of said legs having a free end so that upon the swab holder being swung away from the axis of said handle, a swab may be inserted or withdrawn into or from said loop, said loop spaced from the end of said handle so that the gap therebetween is slightly less than the thickness of the inserted swab for producing a pinching effect thereon, and a ring slidable on the handle, and adapted to slide over the legs when the same are lying within the cutout portions and against the ledges so as to lock the swab holder in closed position.
