WHEELBARROW FOR COAL TRUCKS Filed Oct. 16, 1953 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented Aug. 27, 1935 UNITED; STATES PAT ENT. OFFICE 2,012,356 7 p 3 I V WHEELBARROW FonooAi.- TRUCKS r I s Q 2 James BremnenDetroit, r Application October 16, lcsaserial No.i693,76o
3 Claims. (01.280 52) Q It is obviously a well known fact that the customary construction of wheel barrows provides the arrangement whereby a number of heads of the bolts used project'through the metal bottom of the bed of the wheel barrow'which causes thereby'a decided obstruction to the use of the shovel in contact with the bed in the ordinary use of the same. occasioned by this obstruction greatly retards the work of the operator, and in this manner and which is'increas'ed by the number of wheel barrows being employedjithe delay. resultant from this. difiiculty mounts to costly and useless expe'nse fo'r'the coal dealer. 15
This difiiculty is also very injurious tothe edge oi the shovel, as the same .continuouslycontacting thejbolt heads the edge becomes nicked and otherwise rendered rough and uneven.
The primary'object of my invention is to incorporate certain features in the construction of this type of wheel barrow whereby the bolts of the construction are arranged sothat their heads do not project through the bottom ofthe bed and are likewise not visibly within the, bed, thereby effecting a perfectly smooth obstructionless sur-' face, which admits ofthegrapid anduninterrupted operation. of the'shovel upon this surface.
It is needless to state thatthe difiiculty caused by the obstructing bolt heads is.entirely overcome as result of my improvement and discovery.
The invention possesses further advantages, all of which will be clearly revealed during the course of the following detailed description, illustrated throughout the accompanying drawings, 'and more fully pointed out in the appended claims.
With reference to-the drawings, which illustrate Figure 4 is a partial side elevation ofa wheel barrow for coal, indicating a similar view of a modified form of my invention.
Figure 5 is a bottom or underneath view of the complete wheel barrow, indicating the invention thereupon. t
Figure 6 is a transverse section taken substan- For this reason the difficulty I may upon line 6- 6 of Figure 1, of the modified "form of the invention.
Figure '7 is a partial bottom viewjof the wheel vention. v I
. Preparatory to disclosing the invention in detail barrow-indicatingthe modified form of the inthereof, iti's to be understood that throughout the disclosure the letters will refer to the'various withthefinvention, while. the numerals will designate the elements concerning the invention proper. The invention comprises transversely arranged channel members indicatedat l, 2 and 3 respect ively, and which are secured to bottom A of bed,
B in the spaced apart relation by meansof preferably a welding process. i v Openings 4, are provided in eachof the channels 2 and 3 so as to accommodate b lts 5;-for
channel I, bolts 6 forchannel 2 and bolts! for channel All of said bolts have the usual nut and. washer as indicated, f
Inasmuch as channel members and {are rigidly secured to'bottom A and-beinghtransversely arranged, the advantage derived'therefrom is that said bottomis greatly strengthened lelrhentsof the wheel barrowin coordination 1 Referring to Figure 3 it. isclearlyobserved'that by this reinforcement, and for this'reaso'n the bottom will withstand much hard wear and abuse,
and will give decidedly more service than the ordinary method of construction of this type of wheel barrow. Y s
In Figure 1, it. is clearly seen also that bolts I and 2 pass through blocks C and also through handle bars D, and in this manner body B is rigidly retained with said handle bars, efiecting thereby a substantial construction.
The forwardportion of body B is'also substantially supported by virtue of vertically arranged braces 9, one end of which is secured to channel member 3 by means of bolts .1 respectively, and the opposite end thereof being secured to the forward, portion of respective handle bars .D by bolts In as indicated. j
Again referring to Figure 3, the object of slot 8 of Opening 4 is to'permit the replacing of either of bolts 5, Band 1 with new bolts when same become corroded or otherwise unreliable. This arrangement being necessary in View of the permanent engagement of channel members I, 2 and 3 with bottom ,A of body B. It is understood of course that said bolts are provided with a square neck which is adapted to engage slot 8 and remain in this relation until removed. To remove the bolts the nut therefor is disengaged and'the head of the bolt is shitte d to opening 4, which is slightly larger than said head thereby permitting same to drop through the opening. The head of the new bolt is likewise inserted into said opening and shifted so that the neck of the ;-b olt --will-engage slot 8 and permanently remain therein.
Anotheradvantage of the'invention is the pro-- vision of gate I I, which is adapted topivotally en! gage the forward portion'bfbody B by means of I .baIIOWfRartioulafly when the coal is well piled f upon the same. ,Spring l3 admits of gate l i being readily opened when required but will retain the gate'normally closed.
While the primary intention of the invention is to provide means for eliminating the necessity of having ,thebolts pass through bottom A, by pro-,
viding channels as described, the invention seeks to cover any method where members are arranged t ansverse f bod and. p ovi any form of recess to accommodate the bolt heads.
Beferringparticularly to Figures 4, 6 and 7, a
mo fied fo m o t e inv n io i i l r I this form theinvention seeks to cover a longitudinally arranged method, which comprises ,metal i) memb'ers 1 5 for the rear and, i6 for the front. Said members are Ladapted'to conform to blocks C and handle bars D respectively and are secured to these members by bolts l'l withthe usual nuts andwashers therefor as shown. U members are preferably welded to bottom A of body B and thetop portion ofsaidmernbers being neatly recessed into bloclgs C respectively. In this manner the invention seeks to cover any method by'lon- I gitudinal arrangement'for this purpose. I i I-Iavingthu's described my invention, what' I a m s ew s 1. Ina wheelbarrow, a pair of handle bars, a ground engaging wheel supported'by the forward en porti f the han bar a b ks arranged longitudinally on the handle bars, channel members extending transversely across the bottom of the body and being weldedthereto, the upper edges of the blocks being notched to accommodate said channel members so that the upper faces of the blocks engage the bottom face of the body, leg members, bolts extending through the bottom of the channel members, blocks, handlebars andleg members respectively to secure the parts in a rigid assembled position, nuts threaded on theilower e'ndsof the bolts.
2. 'In a wheelbarrow, 'a pair of handle bars, a ground engaging wheel supported by the forward end portions of the handlebars, a body, blocks arrangedllongitudinally on the handle bars, channel members extending transversely across the :bottom of the body and being welded thereto, the
Hupperedges of.the;blo ,cks being notched to accome facesbf the blocks engage the bottom face of the bo,dy, l,eg members bolts extending through the bottom of the channel'members, blocks, ,han-

In a wheelbarrow, a pair of handle bars, a
ing transverselyacross the bottom of the body and being welded thereto at the intermediate portion and rear portion thereof, respectively, the upper edges of the 'bloc'ks'be'ing notched to accommodate said channel members so that the upper faces of the blocks engage the bottom face of the body, leg members, bolts'extending through the bottom of the channel members, blocks, handle bars and leg members respectively to secure the parts in a rigid assembled position, nuts threaded on the lower ends of the bolts, anadditional channel member welded transversely to the bottom of the forward end portion of the body, vertically disposed braces secured at their lower ends to the forward ends of the respective handle bars, the upper ends of the braces being disposed laterally for disposition against the bottom of the front channel member, and securing means extending through the base of thefront channel member and the laterally disposed upper ends of the braces.
