This invention relates to a locking bar and plate structure adapted to be used in conjunction with the plunger of a switch operating mechanism and it consistsin the novel provided at the ends or" the slot with recesses. larly disposed end portions areprovided and are adapted to tit snuglyv against the end edgesof the slot and enter the recesses and completely fill the same whereby surfaces of the lugs define end surfaces of theslots and other surfaces of the lugs lie in the same plane as those in which the side surfaces of the bar lie. 7

As illustrated in the accompanying drawings the switch operating mechanism is indi cated at 1 and is provided with the usual plunger bar 2. The said operating mechanism is connected by means of a rod 4 with a switch tongue 5 located adjacent a track rail 6 in the usual manner. The bar 7 is thread-. ed at its, inner end as at 9 and nuts 10are screwed upon the'saidthreaded end and en'- gage against the sides of an eye carried by the cross rod 8 as best shown in Figure 1 of the drawings. The bar 7 is provided at its lower side and in the vicinity of its outer end'with a slot-12 and at its upper side with a slot 13. The slots 12 and 13 do not register I with each other transversely of the bar. Angle lugs 14 are fixed against the end walls oith'e slots 13 andthe said angle lugs are formed from case hardened metal as for instance steel and the lugs 14 are adapted to receive one of the lugs 3 of the plunger 2 between them. The outer end of the bar 7 threaded as at 15 and a platemember 16 is applied to the side of the bar 7 and is v provided with a fork 17 which receives the threaded portion 15 of the'bar 7. The lugs 24 are of the same form as the lugs 14 hereinbefore de scribed and are made of case hardened material as for instance steel. The upper and lower edges of the lock bar 7 and the plate 16 registerwith each other and the lugs 1 1 are located at the opposite registering edges of the said parts from the edge thereof at which the lugs 2 1 are located so that the lugs 14 receive between them the plunger 2.
The lugs 14 and 24 being of hard material prevent the parts from wearing and conse quently the locking device is strong and durable and will serve for a miximum length of time. I
The lug 3 is part of the usual switch operating mechanism and it is carried by the usual plunger bar 2. The bar 2 passes trans versely of the bar 7 and plate 16 which in turn are provided with recesses which receive the lugs 14 and 24 and which constitute the subject matter of the present invention. The bar 7 and the plate 16 may beprovided with any number of recesses and by shifting the plate with relation to the said bar certain of the said recesses may be brought into register with each other and when these recesses register the bar 2 is located in them. The present invention shows one method only of mounting and using the lugs 14 and 2ain recesses of a bar 7 and plate 16. The invention may be used to advantage in conjunction with other devices without departing from the spirit thereof as expressed in the claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed is 1. In a mechanism as described a bar member provided at its longitudinal edge with a slot and having at one side and at the ends of the slots longitudinally disposed recesses and lug members of relatively hard material having angularly disposed end portions, one end portion of the lugs bears against the end edges of the slot and the other end portions of the lugs entering the adjacent recesses and completely filling the same.
2. In a mechanism as described, a bar member provided at its edge with a slot and at its side and at the end of the edge with a recess, a lug member of relatively hard material having angularly disposed end portions, one end portion of the lug being disposed transversely across the bar and with a surface in contact with the end edge of the slot, the other end portion ofthe lug member entering the recess and having surfaces in contact with the surfaces of the recess and completely filling the recess, said lug member having other surfaces which lie in the same plane as those occupied by th side surfaces of the bar member.
