IMPROVEMENT IN SIPHONS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent N o. 201,134, dated March 12, 1878; application filed I January 23, 1878.
siphon which will be simple in construction,
and which will be automatically opened and closed by means of a valve pivoted to alange attached to the longer arm, and provided with a iioat, all arranged and adapted for the purposes hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a siphon constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the iloat and valve, with the latter closed on the mouth of the inlet-arm; and Fig. 3 shows the oat elevated and the valve opened.
a is the siphon-tube, bent'in ordinary form, so as to provide the short arm a and the longer arm a2, as shown. Near to the open end of the shorter arm al I attach a suitable flange or support, b, which extends outward a sufficient distance to afford facilities for attaching the valve c. The end b1 of the siphon-tube projects below this ange, as shown. The
valve c is provided with an arm, c1, which is pivoted to a lug, c2, affixed on the under side of the iiange b. The lug c2 is made long enough so that when the valve cis on the end of the siphon the arm c1 will rest in a horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 2. The arm c1 is pivoted eccentrically, so that the valve c, which is placed on the shorter end, will be held against the end of the tube by the greater weight of the longer end, except as otherwise hereinafter explained. On the longer end may be attached a weight, d, if desired, in order to make it act with greater promptness. e is a float or buoy, made of cork or other light material, and attached by a stem or support, el, to the outer end; and on the upper side of the longer part of the arm c it is so attached that when the arm cl is in a horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 2, it will be above the plane of the mouth of the arm al ofv the siphon a. f is a reservoir, and is designed to hold water, in which the outlet end of the siphon may be kept constantly immersed, as shown; and it has an outlet, f', from which the water Hows when the siphon is in operation.
The operation of this device will be readily understood. The siphon is filled by any ordinary means, and the open end of the shorter arm placed in the water that is to be drawn off. The water, acting on the iloat e, will raise it and lift the valve o off the end of the pipe, as shown in Fig. 3. When the water has been lowered near to the end of the pipe the float will fall with the water till the valve will rest firmly against and close the tube, as shown in Fig. 2, and stop the ow. When the water in the tank rises so as to lift the float the valve will be opened, and the liow of water through the siphonwill' immediately commence.
I am aware of the existence of the patent to A. M. Ramey, January 21, 1877, and I do not claim the invention set forth in his specification; but
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
In combination with the siphon a, the rocking bar cl, pivoted intermediately between its ends to the lug c2, and having on one end the valve c and on its opposite end the oat e, supported on the stem or arm c1 'above the plane of the mouth of the inlet-arm al of said siphon, substantially as and for the purposes set fort-h.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature'in presence of two witnesses.
