S. W. WILLEY GARMENT HANGER Fi led Jan. 22, 1935 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented July 30, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention appertains to new and useful improvements in garment hangers.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a garment hanger which will permit garments, especially ladies dresses to be hung without the likelihood of the same easily slipping off.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a coat hanger which can be easily stamped from sheet metal and constructed at low cost.
These and various other important objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent to the reader of the following specification.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 represents a side elevational view of the hanger.
Figure 2 represents a sectional View taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 represents an end elevational view of the hanger.
Figure 4 represents a plan View of the upper section of the hanger before it has been completely formed and attached to the lower section.
Figure 5 represents a fragmentary plan View of the upper section immediately after it has been stamped.
Figure 6 represents a sectional view taken substantially on line 6-6 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals designate like parts, it can be seen that in Figure 5 the upper section 6 is provided with a pair of struck out tongues having their free ends disposed in opposite directions. The intermediate portion of this strip 6 is provided with an opening 8 for receiving the shank 9 of the hook ID. The strip 6 is formed with a laterally disposed'plate H adjacent the free end portion of each of the tongues l and in completing the hanger, these plates H are bent inwardly under the strip 6 so as to underlie the tongues I in substantially the manner as shown in Figure 6. A corrugated rubber cover is placed around the end of each of the tongues 1, this resilient plate or pad 5 is denoted by numeral l2 and is intended to prevent the slipping off of articles which are placed over the tongues 1. It will be observed that each of the tongues 1 is bulged as at l3 to increase its tension.
The lower section of the hanger is denoted by numeral l4 and is constructed in a similar manner by having the plates Iii-I5 bent under the free end portion of the struck out tongues i6 which are covered with corrugated resilient pads 6 ll. These tongues I6 have bulges I 8 therein to increase the tension thereof. One end of the lower section I4 is hingedly connected as at IE to one end of the upper section 6. The other end 0f the lower section I 4 is formed with a semi- 10 cylindrical formation 20 for'receivin'g the rolled inturned end portion 2i of the opposite end of the upper section 6. In other words there is sufficient spring tension in the semi-cylindrical formation 20 to receive by spring snap action the 15 rolled end portion 2| of the section 6.
Ladies skirts can be placed over the section l4 and to make the use of the device more convenient, the section 14 may be swung downwardly so that the section can be inserted through 20 the garment in any manner desired.
The tongues and l 6 can be lifted and snapped over ladies garment supporting straps in fact any pieces of garment, or when the garment is placed over the tongues it is substantially prevented 5 from slipping off of the rubber pads l1.
While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size, materials may be resorted to without departing from 30 the spirit or scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Having described the claimed is:
In a garment hanger, a shoulder conforming 35 member, a clamp device on each shoulder portion of the said member, each of the said devices consisting in providing the shoulder conforming member with a lateral plate-like portion bent downwardly and under the corresponding shoul- 40 der portion of the member to provide a seat, and a clamp member struck from the shoulder portion proper, said shoulder conforming member being of spring material, said clamp members being adapted to clamp a garment between itself and the said seat.
