My invention relates to new and useful im- :provements in furm'tura-and more particularly to a structure in which a lavatory basin and a dressing table or the like :are combined.

The invention consists in the improved construction and combination of parts and their ag- =groupment in cooperable relation, to be more fully described hereinafter, and the novelty of which 'will be particularly pointed out and distinctly claimed.

The rear vertical edges of the side walls terminate in inward directed opposed flanges I5, I6, respectively, thez'co-rner between flange t6 and wall 8 receiving a vertical channel memberI'I having its web secured to -the flange I6 and one of its forward directed flanges lying against and secured to the wall 8. The channel member extends upward through an aperture the top walls of cabinets 5 and 6 and terminates some distance above the top wall to provide a support, see Fig. 4. The front vertical edges :of the side walls have inward and forward stepped portions I8 providing front wall'portions which terminate in rearward directed parallel flanges I9 defining the side edges or faces of a drawer and a door opening for the main cabinet. Within the cabinet and extending from front to rear thereof, there is a liner of sheet-metal having side walls alined with and joining the flanges I9 and having a top wall 2I abutting the top wall 9, the bottom edges :of the walls 20 being secured to the base portions 12, 1.3, :as "at 122. The cabinet is reinforced'by verticallyspaced substantially horizontal spacer members :23 positioned between the side walls of the liner and the side walls of the cabinet. Themembers .23 are preferably in the form of. channels having their flanges directed'upward, one flange of each member being secured, .as at .24, directlyto the .wall 1 or 8 and the other flange being secured by longitudinal clamping strips '25 toathe adja: cent liner wall 20. The cabinet has "a bottom wall- 25,'having'depending side :flanges I I which are secured to theliner walls 20. At its front edge :the wall :26 is turned downward and then rearward, as at 28, to join with a base portion 29, which is stepped downward-and rearward in conformity with the base portionssi z; I:3, to which it is joined at its side edges. The main *cabinet is divided internally by a partition :30 into an upper drawer compartment and a lower shelf compartment. A door or :closure member 31 carried by hinges .32. secured to :one :of the flanges I9 serves to close the front of the shelf compartment which contains one or mores'helves 33. The rear vertical edges of the liner sidewalls 'ZII are turned outwardly, as at 34, substantially in the plane of the rear flanges 15,..116. The back or rear-of the cabinet 5.is closed by zajwall ,oreplate member 35 which is secured to .zoutturned liner portions 34 and is alsosecured' at itsfventiealzside edges tothe flange I5 and the :channel :member I'I, respectively, see Fig. 5. The platemerriber extends-above the cabinet topxwall 9 and serves :as the rear wall for the supplemental :cabinetL-G,
69, side walls I0, and a rear wall H being joined at its top edge to a flange 36 depending from the top wall 31 of cabinet 6, and at its side edges to the side walls 38 of the cabinet 6. The side walls 38 have inturned flanges 39 at their bottom edges which rest upon and are secured to the top wall 9. Within the cabinet 6 there is a supporting member 40 secured to the top wall 9 and having upstanding longitudinal flanges 4| which are turned outwardly into engagement with the side walls 38 to which they are secured. The flanges 4| carry longitudinally extending horizontal drawer guides or rails 42 which are vertically adjustable, see Fig. 7, and which are rigidly secured in position by screws 43. A drawer 44 is positioned within the cabinet 6 and has side guiding members 45 which engage and hook over the top and bottom edges of the rails 42 to slidably support the drawer. The drawer compartment in cabinet 5 has horizontal guides or rails 46 which are vertically adjustable and which are held against movement by screws 41 passed through the liner side walls 20 and screw-threaded into backing strips. Within the compartment is a drawer 48 having rigid'therewith side guiding members 49 extending longitudinally of the drawer and which ride on the rails 45, preferably being bent or hooked over the top and bottom edges thereof. Each of the drawers may be provided with a pivoted locking dog 49 cooperable with a notch 49 in the topface of the guide rail to normally prevent the drawer from being accidentally withdrawn entirely from its cabinet.
The mirror I has a surrounding frame 50 which receives the mirror glass 5| which is secured in place by a backing plate 52. The frame 5%] is rigidly secured to the channel members I! by supporting plates 53 which overlap and are fixed to the frame and the members ll by screws 54. The frame 50 extends between and substantially engages the inner side walls of the cabinets 5, 5, the lower mirror frame member 55 having its lower edge in a. plane slightly below the plane of the top walls 9, 9', see Figs. 3 and 4.
The main cabinets are rigidly jointed together at their bottom portionsby a horizontally extending iron angle bar 58 having end flanges 51 abutting the base portions l3, I3 to which the flanges are secured by bolts 58 or the like. The main cabinets are also rigidly jointed together at their upper portions by a supporting means, preferably in the form of a substantially horizontal framework which is substantially rectangular in plan view. The framework includes side frame members 59, preferably iron angle bars secured to the walls 8, 8' and extend forwardly from :the rear edge of the cabinets, each having a wide top flange 68 and a depending flange BI. The flanges 6| are secured to the cabinet walls .8, 8 by bolts 62 which arethreaded into reinforcing plates 63 secured to the inside faces of the walls 8, 8. The flanges are rigidly joined at their front ends by a downwardfacing channel iron or bar member 84, and at their rear ends by an iron angle bar 65 havingv a depending flange substantially in the plane of the cabinet rear walls.
This framework supports the basin 4 which is preferably of cast ceramic material having a top wall 61 through which an integral depending bowl 68 opens. "The basin has a front apron or wall which join the top wall along their top edges and each other at their vertical end or side edges to provide a. substantially rectangular basin. The
basin also has bottom wall portions 12 which overlie the horizontal flanges 5!] and which are joined to the apron and, to the side and rear walls. The bottom wall portions are each provided with front and rear elongated apertures or slots 13 which aline with apertures 15 through the flanges 88. Adjustably screw-threaded through the apertures 1'5 there are supporting sleeve members 16 having top recesses 11 in which are positioned annular cushion blocks 78 of rubber 01' the like on which the bottom wall portions seat. Ihe basin is clamped rigidly to the supporting framework by bolts and nuts 19 extending through the basin bottom wall and the sleeve member 75, the bolts preferably having cross-bar heads to pass through the slots 73, the heads being turned to lie across the slots after insertion. The space between each of the cabinet side walls 8, 8 and the adjacent side edge of the basin top wall and apron is closed and sealed by a strip member 88. Each of the members Whats a horizontal top portion, a vertical front portion and a short rearward extending bottom portion, and is preferably in the form of a hollow metal moulding, substantially quarter round metal, having an underturned lip or edge 8| and a vertical flange82, see Fig. 4. The underturned edge BI engages the top basin wall and the apron and lies under the front portion of the basin bottom wall. The vertical flange 82 lies against the cabinet side wall and is fixed throughout its length to the edges of a plate member 83 which extends substantially from front to rear and from top to bottom of the basin. The moulding 8D terminates rearwardly at and in abutting relation to the mirror frame which overlies the rear edge portion of the basin top wall. The plate member 83 has, at its rear vertical edge, a lateral flange 84 which engages the basin rear wall and by its resilience tends to pull the plate member 83 rearwardly so that the vertical portion of the underturned edge 8| is held tightly against the side edge of the front apron. The bottom edge of the plate member 83 is also provided with a lateral flange 85'which engages the underface of .the basin bottom wall and which by its resilience acts to pull the plate member 83 downward and the .horiz'ontal'top portion of the underturned edge 8| tightly against the side edge of the basin top wall. The flange 85 terminates at its front end, as at 86, substantially at the rear end of. the rearward extending bottom portion of the moulding 80, see Fig. 3. The vertical flange 82 is. urged into tight engagement with the cabinet side wall by resilient means 81,,preferably, a pad or slab of sponge rubber or the like which lies between the basin side wall and the plate member 83. The joint between the basin and the cabinet side walls is thus closed and sealed by means permitting relative movement between the. parts which may occur from expansion and contraction or from other causes. The moulding 80 also-accommodates for and conceals slight irregularities in the size of the basin casting. a
The basin-i has on its top wall 61 and preferably substantiallycentrally of the rear edge of the bowl 68, a protuberance 88, preferably cast integral with the basin and having a portion or lip 89 which overhangs the rear edge of the bowl. Theprotuberance 88 comprises an inlet conduit member and extends rearward of the rear wall 89 of the bowl. Through the protuberance 88 there is a conduit or passageway 90 which at its inlet end opensv downward through the basintop wall in back of the bowl rear wall and which at its outlet endop'en's downward and forward into thebowl; The inlet end of 'conduit 90 receives a pipe 9i 'whi'ch'is sealed in the bore of the conduit-by a compressed rubber sleeve 92 orsthe like, and which is threaded at its other end into a T-fit'tin'g 93. The 'arms'of the fitting 93 are connected by branch conduits to hot and cold water control valves 94, of which but one is shown, having supply pipes 95. The bowl has a drain or discharge outlet passage 96 in its bottom wall which is connected to a discharge or drain pipe -97. The outlet '96 has a valve 98, preferably of the po -up; type controlled by a cam 99 on a shaft "I00 iiournaled through the wall of thepipe .i The bowl'rear wall '89 has an overflow passageway I01 therein which opens at its inlet end,- "as at 1'02, through the top portion of the front face of the wall 89" into the bowl beneath the cve'rhangin'g lip 89. The other end of the overflow passageway I 0 I dischargesinto the outlet passage 96 beneath the valve 98 so as to by-- pass the excess water around the valve and to prevent the water level rising in the bowl above the overflow-openingtfl-l The control valves 94 'areoperable by hand- -grips or handles I03 carried by the apron :69 and projecting from the front face thereof. The handles I03 are fixed to shafts I04 'journaled in apertures through the apron and extend rearward beneath'the basin top wall where they are-joined rigidly with the stems of valves '94. The valve '98 is preferably controlled a pull wire I05 connected at one end to a lever arm'on a valve operating cam shaft I80 and at its other end connected to a lever arm "I06 in rear of the apron. The arm I06 is fixed on a shaft I06 which is journaled through an aperture in the apron and which is provided in front of the apron with an operating handle I01. This mechanism for controlling the valves 94 and "98 forms part of my copending application, Serial No. 602,413, filed April 1, 1932; so that more detailed description thereof is not necessary herein.
The drain pipe 9! is concealed by a panel member I08 which extends between the cabinet side walls 8, 8" and has rearward extending side, top and bottom flanges I09. The member I08 'fits within a substantially U-shaped frame having side frame members IIO joined by a bottom frame member III. The frame members H0 and III have at their inner marginal edge a continuous rearward offset portion or flange III providing a'seat for the rear edge of the flange I09. The frame members I'I0 are rigidly secured to the side walls 8, 8.. The member III seats on a base portion I I2 to which it is secured by clips,I I2 or the like, the portion H2 being stepped downward and rearward in conformity with the portions- I3, I3. The ends of the portion I'I2are provided with rearward extending flanges II3 which are secured to the portions I3, I3 by bolts or the like H4. The lower edge portion'of the panel member I08 is provided on its rear face with clips II 5 which engage over the top edge of the frame member III to hold the bottom edge of the panel member in position. The panel member is held. at its top which lies closely adjacent the underside of the basin by screws H6 or the like threaded into the flanges I I I of the vertical side frame members I I0. Another panel member In is provided which conceals the basin supporting means and the underside of the basin. The member III has upward extending side flanges I I8 which abut the cabinet side walls and has a depending flange I I9 at rear edge which extends downward behind the panel member I08 "and engages the rear faces of the flanges I I I so as to close the horizontal-space between the panel members. A screw -or the like I 20-ispreferab1y provided for securing the members I 08 and II! together, the screw being threaded into the flange I I9 so that the flange "is pulled tightly against the frame members. member I I7 is inclined slightly in a forward and upward direction and at its front edge has an upturned fiangeIZI which lies against the front flange of the channel member to which it is secured by one or more screws H2 or the like. The top edge of the flange "I has a rearward -extending lip I23 which extends between the basin and the channel member and which prefer-'- ably engages the top face of the channel mem-'- ber 54'. I
The structure is preferably wired for electricity and has a conduit outlet or junction box 'I'Z I mounted on the rear angle-iron 5'6. From the box I24 sheathed or armored wiring 1'25 leads to outlet sockets I26 preferably supported in the side walls of the supplemental cabinets '8, 6", see Fig. 4.
The elements comprising or making up the mirror, the supporting members or cabinets and the basin supporting means, respectively, are preferably joined together by spot welding or the like, except as is otherwise specified for the joints between particular elements or parts.
The structure is assembled as follows; The main cabinets 5, 5 carrying the supplemental cabinets 6, 6' are connected rigidly together by the basin supporting framework and by the base member H2 and angle-ironSB. The basin I has the strip members 80 applied thereto and is then positioned between the cabinet walls 8, "8 and upon the supporting framework with the basin bottom wall portions I2 resting upon the resilient cushioning member 18. If necessary, the sleeve members I6 are screwed downward to provide space above the basin top wall to set the mirror I in position. The mirror is now placed between the side walls 8, 8 with its rear face substantially flush with the rear walls of the cabinets and is then rigidly clamped in position by the plates 53 and screws 54. Any space or crevice between the top wall of the basin and the bottom mirror frame member 55 is nowtaken up by adjustment of the sleeve memberslfi, and if after tightening the nuts and bolts I9 the joint is not tight, any crevice will be eliminated by further adjustment of the sleeve members. The sleeve members also serve to permit the basinto be set level on the supporting framework and provide means for overcoming differences in depth of the basin side walls, which may occur in mass production of the cast basins When the basin and mirror have been set in final position, the panels I08 and I I! are put in place and secured by the fastening screws. The completed furniture structure is now ready for installation in a room or other compartment when the inlet and outlet piping may be connected to supply and discharge mains and the wiring electrically connected to a. supply circuit at the box I24. Certain novel features of construction and arrangement disclosed in common herein and in my prior copending application Serial No. 602,413, filed April 1, 1932 and not claimed herein, are claimed in said copending application. Certain other novel features of construction and-arrangement disclosed in common herein "and "in said application,
Serial No. 602,413, of which the present application is a continuation in part, are claimed herein.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:--
l. A structure of the character described, comprising laterally spaced supporting members-supporting means extending between and rigidly securing said members together, a basin positioned between said members and carried by said supporting means, and resilient means interposed between each of said supporting members and the adjacent portion of said basin.
2. A structure of the character described, comprising laterally spaced supporting members, supporting means extending between and rigidly securing said members together, a cast ceramic basin positioned between said members and carried by said supporting means, resilient means interposed between each of said members and the adjacent portion of said basin and means securing said basin to said supporting means.
3. A structure of the character described, comprising laterally spaced sheet metal cabinets, cross bars extending between and rigidly securing saidcabinets together, a basin positioned between said cabinets and carried by said cross bars, and resilient means interposed between each cabinet and. the adjacent portion of said basin.
4. A structure of the character described, comprising laterally spaced supporting members, a basin supported by and between said members, a mirror frame at the rear of and adapted to engage the top' face of said basin, means rigidly securing said mirror frame to and supporting said mirror frame from supporting members, and means to adjust said basin vertically for engagement of said basin with said mirror frame.
5.. A structureof the character described, comprising a cabinet, a supporting member spaced laterally from said cabinet, a basin positioned between and supported by said cabinet and said member, the top wall of said basin being below the top wall of said cabinet, and means sealing the joint between said basin and said cabinet.
6. A structure of the character described, com prising .a cabinet having a vertical side Wall, a supporting member spaced laterally from said wall, a basin positioned between and supported by said wall and said member, a sealing strip closing the'joint between the top face of said basin and prising laterally spaced supporting members, supporting means fixed to and extending between said members to rigidly connect'said members together, a basin having a top wall with a depending bowl having a bottom wall, and means clamping said bottom wall to said supporting means.
8. A structure of the character described, comprising laterally spaced supporting members, sup porting means fixed to and extending between said members to rigidly connect said members together, a basin having a. top wall with a depending bowl and having a bottom wall, means clamping said bottom wall to said supporting means, said bowl having a waste outlet and a waste pipe connected to said outlet, and a panel extending between said members to conceal said pipe.
9. A structureiof the character described, comprising a cabinet having a top wall and a side wall, a supporting member spaced laterally from said cabinet, a basin positioned between and supported by said cabinet and said member, said basin having a top wall and a depending front apron, a bowl opening through said top wall and depending therefrom rearward of said apron, the top wall of said basin being belowthe top wall of said cabinet, and a sealing strip closing the space between said side wall and the adjacent edge of said apron and between said side wall and the adjacent edge of said basin top wall.
10. A structure of the character described, comprising a cabinet having a top wall and a side wall, a supporting memberspaced laterally from said cabinet, a. basin positioned between and sup-.- ported by said cabinet and said member, said basin having a top wall and 2. depending front apron, a bowl opening through said top wall and depending therefrom rearward of said apron, the top wall of said basin being below the top wall of said cabinet, a sealing strip closing the space between said side Wall and the adjacent edge of said apron and between said side wall and the adjacent edge of said basin top wall, means holding said strip in engagement with said side wall, and means holding said strip in engagement with said apron and said basin top wall.
11. A structure of the character described, comprising laterally spaced supporting members, a substantially horizontal framework fixed to and extending between said members to rigidly connect said members together, a basin having a top wall and a front apron depending therefrom, a bowl opening through said top wall and depending therefrom to a point below said apron, a panel extending rearward from the front of said frame and beneath said bowl and cooperating with said apron to conceal the underside of said bowl, said bowl having a waste outlet and a waste pipe connected thereto, and a panel positioned in front of said pipe and meeting said first-named panel to conceal said pipe.

A structure of the character described, comprising a cabinet having a top wall and a side wall, a supporting member spaced laterally from said side wall, a basin having a top wall and a. bowl opening through said top wall, side walls depending from said basin top wall, a. horizontal framework rigidly joining said cabinet and said supporting member and carrying said basin, a plate member positioned between one of said basin side walls and said cabinet side wall, a sealing strip secured to said plate member and overlying a side edge of said basin top wall, a resilient flange on said plate member engaging the bottom face of said one basin side wall and urging said strip into engagement with said basin top wall, and resilient means interposed between said plate member and said one basin side wall and urging said strip into engagement with said cabinet side wall.

A structure, of the character described, comp-rising a cabinet having a top wall and a side wall, a supporting member spaced laterally from said side wall, a basin having a top wall and a bowl opening through said top wall, side walls depending from said basin top wall, said basin having a front apron, a. horizontal framework rigidly joining said cabinet and said supporting member and carrying said basin, a plate member positioned between one of said basin side walls and said cabinet side wall, a sealing strip secured to the top and front edges of said plate member and overlying a side edge of said basin top wall and a side edge of said apron, a resilient flange on said plate member engaging the bottom face of said one basin side wall and urging said strip into engagement with said basin top Wall, a resilient flange on said plate member engaging the rear face of said one basin side wall and urging said strip into engagement with said apron, and resilient means interposed between said plate member and said one basin sidewall and urging said strip into engagement with said cabinet side wall.
14. A structure of the character described, comprising laterally spaced supporting members, a basin member having a substantially fiat top wall and a bowl depending from and opening through said wall, means securing said basin member between said supporting members, said basin member including a wall member depending from the forward edge portion of said basin member and extending between said supporting members, a closure plate extending between said supporting members and rearwardly beneath said bowl from the lower edge of said wall member, a conduit member opening into said bowl and depending therefrom, and a panel member extending between said supporting members rearward of said wall member to conceal said conduit member.
15. A structure of the character described, comprising laterally spaced cabinets, a basin member positioned between said cabinets and having a depending front wall extending between said cabinets, a closure member extending rearward from the lower edge of said wall and beneath said basin member, a cross-frame member extending between and secured to said cabinets adjacent their lower edges, a panel member extending between said cabinets and joining said closure member, and means securing said panel member to said cross-frame member.
16. A structure of the character described, comprising laterally spaced supporting members, supporting means fixed to and extending between said members to rigidly connect said members together, a basin mounted in said structure between the upper portions of said members and having a top wall with a depending bowl and a Waste outlet connection to said bowl, said supporting means including a part extending between said members beneath the front portion of said bowl and at a level above the bottom of the bowl, and a wall concealing said outlet connection, and comprising a front portion in front of said part and a lower rearwardly extending portion beneath and adjacent the bowl and a portion depending from the rear edge of the first mentioned portion.
17 A structure of the character described, comprising laterally spaced supporting members, supporting means fixed to and extending between said members to rigidly connect said members together, a basin'mounted in said structure between the upper portions of said members and having a top wall with a depending bowl and a waste outlet connection to said bowl, said supporting means including a part extending between said members beneath the front portion of the bowl at a level above the bottom of the bowl, other supporting means fixed to and extending between said members located adjacent the rear of said structure and at a lower level than said basin, and a wall concealing said outlet connection and comprising an uprising front portion in front of said part and a lower rearwardly extending portion beneath and adjacent the bowl and a portion depending from the rear edge of the first mentioned portion, and connected adjacent its lower end to said other supporting means.
18. A structure of the character described, comprising laterally spaced supporting members, supporting means fixed to and extending between said members to rigidly connect said members together, a basin mounted on said supporting means and having a. top wall with a depending bowl and a waste outlet connection to said bowl, and having an apron depending from the front edge of said top wall and a wall concealing said outlet connection, and comprising a portion extending rearwardly from the lower edge of said
