Description
- This is a divisional of U.S. application Ser. No. 11/474,419, filed Jun. 26, 2006, which claims priority to Japanese Application No. 2005-351283, filed Dec. 5, 2005, respectively. The entire disclosures are hereby incorporated by reference.
- The present invention relates to a golf club head and, more particularly, to a fixing structure of a viscoelastic body to a hollow golf club head.
- In a wood type golf club head represented by a driver or fairway wood, the golf club head has been formed to have a hollow structure to increase its volume in order to enlarge the so-called sweet spot. In addition, a hollow golf club head fixed with a viscoelastic body on a part of its circumferential wall, e.g., in a sole portion, to improve the hitting impression or adjust the hitting sound on impact has been prevailed. When the viscoelastic body is fixed, the vibration on impact is absorbed by the viscoelastic body to improve the hitting impression and decrease the hitting sound that is offensive to the player's ear.
- As a fixing structure to fix a viscoelastic body to a hollow golf club head, for example, a structure disclosed in Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 2005-160947 has been proposed. In Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 2005-160947, the following fixing structure is disclosed. A recess portion is formed in a part of the circumferential wall of a golf club head and a viscoelastic body is inserted in the recess portion. The inner circumferential wall of the recess portion forms a screw hole. When a threaded portion is threadably engaged with the screw hole, the viscoelastic body is sandwiched between the distal end of the threaded portion and the bottom portion of the recess portion.
- In order to more effectively damp vibration on impact by the viscoelastic body, the viscoelastic body is desirably as close to the circumferential wall of the golf club head as possible. When the viscoelastic body is fixed in the sole portion, the viscoelastic body is desirably fixed to the lowest position to lower the center of gravity of the golf club head. In the fixing structure disclosed in Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 2005-160947, a viscoelastic is sandwiched between the distal end of the threaded portion and the bottom portion of the recess portion. With this structure, the viscoelastic body is away from the circumferential wall by the length of the threaded portion. Therefore, this structure still has room for improvement in terms of increasing the vibration damping effect of the viscoelastic body. In the fixing structure disclosed in Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 2005-160947, the viscoelastic body positions at a point higher than the circumferential wall of the sole portion by the length of the threaded portion. Therefore, this structure still has room for improvement in terms of lowering the center of gravity.
- The present invention has been made in order to overcome the deficits of prior art.
- According to the aspects of the present invention, there is provided a hollow golf club head comprising a fixing member having a shaft body formed with a threaded portion at one end, and a head portion at the other end of the shaft body, a viscoelastic body having an opening through which the shaft body extends, a recess portion formed in a circumferential wall of the golf club head and in which the viscoelastic body is disposed, and a screw hole formed in a bottom portion of the recess portion and threadably engages with the threaded portion, wherein the viscoelastic body is fixed between the head portion and the bottom portion by threadably engaging the threaded portion with the screw hole.
- In the golf club head, as the viscoelastic body forms a structure where the shaft body of the fixing member extends through the viscoelastic body, the depth of the recess portion can be shallower, so that the viscoelastic body can be fixed at a position closer to the circumferential wall. Hence, the vibration damping effect of the viscoelastic body can be improved.
- Other features and advantages of the present invention will be apparent from the following descriptions taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters designate the same or similar parts throughout the figures thereof.
- The accompanying drawings, which are incorporated in and constitute a part of the specification, illustrate embodiments of the invention and, together with the description, serve to explain the principles of the invention.

-
FIG. 1 includes a sectional view showing the structure of a golf club head A according to an embodiment of the present invention, and an enlarged view of the main part of the same. The golf club head A forms a hollow body, and its circumferential wall constitutes aface portion 10 which forms a golf ball hitting surface, acrown portion 20 which forms the upper surface of the golf club head A, a side portion 30 (only the back side is shown) which forms the toe-side, heel-side, and back-side side surfaces of the golf club head A, and asole portion 40 which forms the bottom surface of the golf club head A. The golf club head A is also provided with ahosel portion 80 to which a shaft is to be fixed. The golf club head A is desirably made of, e.g., a titanium-based metal material. - Although the golf club head A is a golf club head that is to be used as a driver, the present invention can be applied to a wood type golf club head including a fairway wood or the like other than the driver as well, a utility type golf club head, and other hollow golf club heads.
- A
recess portion 41 extending into the golf club head A is integrally formed in thesole portion 40, andviscoelastic bodies recess portion 41. Although the outline of the side wall of therecess portion 41 forms a circle in this embodiment, the shape of therecess portion 41 is not limited to this, but the outline of the side wall of therecess portion 41 can form an ellipse or a shape having corners. Ascrew hole 41 b is formed in abottom portion 41 a of therecess portion 41. Thescrew hole 41 b is located substantially at the center of thebottom portion 41 a. - A
fixing member 50 threadably engages with ascrew hole 41 b. Thefixing member 50 and an interposedmember 70 fix theviscoelastic bodies FIG. 2 is an exploded perspective view of the fixing structure of the viscoelastic bodies, showing theviscoelastic bodies member 70, and fixingmember 50. InFIG. 2 , the interposedmember 70 is partially cutaway. - The
fixing member 50 has ashaft body 52 formed with a threaded portion at its one end to threadably engage with thescrew hole 41 b, and ahead portion 51 integrally connected to the other end of theshaft body 52. Both theviscoelastic bodies openings 60 a′ and 60 b′ where theshaft body 52 is to extend are formed at the central portions of theviscoelastic bodies openings 60 a′ and 60 b′ are circular through holes, the present invention is not limited to this, and, e.g., anotch 60 c′ may be formed as in aviscoelastic body 60 c shown inFIG. 3B . Although theviscoelastic bodies - The
viscoelastic bodies viscoelastic bodies viscoelastic bodies recess portion 41 in a stacked manner. However, naturally, a single viscoelastic body can be mounted. - The vibration of a golf club head on impact ranges in a variety of frequencies. The frequency band in which a viscoelastic material effectively absorbs vibration is limited to a certain range in accordance with the viscoelastic material. Therefore, the two
viscoelastic bodies viscoelastic bodies - The interposed
member 70 is a member interposed between theviscoelastic bodies head portion 51 of the fixingmember 50, and serves to press theviscoelastic bodies bottom portion 41 a of therecess portion 41 substantially evenly. The interposedmember 70 has aflat surface 70 a with the same shape as the outer shape of each of theviscoelastic bodies opening 70 b where theshaft body 52 is to extend is formed at the center of the interposedmember 70. Although theopening 70 b is a circular through hole, the present invention is not limited to this, and theopening 70 b can be a notch in the same manner as in the viscoelastic body (FIG. 3B ). The central portion of the interposedmember 70 is thinner-walled than its circumferential portion. Thus, when the fixingmember 50 is fixed to therecess portion 41, thehead portion 51 of the fixingmember 50 is partly buried in the interposedmember 70. - In the golf club head A having the above structure, the
shaft body 52 of the fixingmember 50 is inserted in theopenings member 70 andviscoelastic bodies shaft body 52 is threadably engaged with thescrew hole 41 b. Thus, theviscoelastic bodies head portion 51 andbottom portion 41 a. As theviscoelastic bodies shaft body 52 of the fixingmember 50 extends, the depth of therecess portion 41 can be made shallower, so that theviscoelastic bodies - Accordingly, the vibration damping effect of the
viscoelastic bodies viscoelastic bodies sole portion 40 in this embodiment, the center of gravity can be lowered. According to this embodiment, since the interposedmember 70 is interposed between thehead portion 51 and theviscoelastic bodies viscoelastic bodies bottom portion 41 a substantially evenly regardless of the size of thehead portion 51, so that tight contact between theviscoelastic body 60 b andbottom portion 41 a can be ensured. This further improves the vibration damping effect. Due to the presence of the interposedmember 70, theviscoelastic bodies viscoelastic bodies - The fixing
member 50 and interposedmember 70 can also be used as members to adjust the barycentric position of the golf club head A. For example, the fixingmember 50 and interposedmember 70 can be made of a material having a specific gravity that is different from that of the circumferential wall of the golf club head A. When the circumferential wall of the golf club head A is made of a titanium alloy (specific gravity: about 4.5), if the fixingmember 50 and interposedmember 70 are made of stainless steel (specific gravity: about 7.8) or a tungsten alloy (specific gravity: about 13.0), the fixingmember 50 and interposedmember 70 can serve as weights as well, and the barycentric position of the golf club head A is closer to the portions of the fixingmember 50 and interposedmember 70. Conversely, if the fixingmember 50 and interposedmember 70 are made of an aluminum alloy (specific gravity: about 2.7), the barycentric position of the golf club head A is farther away from the portions of the fixingmember 50 and interposedmember 70. - According to this embodiment, the
viscoelastic bodies sole portion 40. However, the viscoelastic body can be fixed at different portions of the golf club head A, e.g., in theside portion 30 orcrown portion 20. The viscoelastic body need not be fixed at a single portion, but a plurality of viscoelastic bodies can be fixed at a plurality of portions. -
FIG. 3A is a sectional view showing the structure of a golf club head B in which a plurality of viscoelastic bodies are fixed at a plurality of portions. InFIG. 3A , the same members as those of the golf club head A are denoted by the same reference numerals, and a description thereof will be omitted. In the golf club head B, aviscoelastic body 61 a is fixed to asole portion 40, and aviscoelastic body 61 b is fixed to a back-side side portion 30. The fixing structure of theviscoelastic body 61 a is the same as that of the golf club head A described above. - The fixing structure of the
viscoelastic body 61 b is also the same as that of the golf club head A. A brief description will be made. Arecess portion 31 extending into the golf club head B is integrally formed in the back-side side portion 30, and theviscoelastic body 61 b is disposed in therecess portion 31. Ascrew hole 31 b is formed in abottom portion 31 a of therecess portion 31. A fixingmember 50′ similar to a fixingmember 50 threadably engages with thescrew hole 31 b. The fixingmember 50′ and an interposedmember 70′ which is similar to an interposedmember 70 fix theviscoelastic body 61 b. The fixingmember 50′ has ashaft body 52′ formed with a threaded portion at its one end to threadably engage with thescrew hole 31 b, and ahead portion 51′ integrally connected to the other end of theshaft body 52′. - The
shaft body 52′ of the fixingmember 50′ is inserted inopenings 70 b′ and 61 b′ of the interposedmember 70′ andviscoelastic body 61 b, respectively, and the threaded portion at the distal end of theshaft body 52′ is threadably engaged with thescrew hole 31 b. Thus, theviscoelastic body 61 b is fixed as it is sandwiched between thehead portion 51′ andbottom portion 31 a. - The two
viscoelastic bodies sole portion 40 and that in theside portion 30. - In the golf club head B, as the
viscoelastic body 61 b and its fixing structure are disposed in the back-side side portion 30, the back side of the golf club head B becomes heavy to deepen the center of gravity. As theviscoelastic body 61 a and its fixing structure are disposed in thesole portion 40, thesole portion 40 side of the golf club head B becomes heavy to lower the center of gravity. Therefore, with the golf club head B, in addition to the vibration damping effect, the center of gravity can be lowered and deepened. The materials of therespective fixing members members respective fixing members members - As many apparently widely different embodiments of the present invention can be made without departing from the spirit and scope thereof, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific embodiments thereof except as defined in the appended claims.
