The subject matter of this specification is a 4 division of the subject matter of the specification filed with my co-pending application Serial No. 637,537, filed October 12th, 1932.
The inventionrelates to axle boxes, and is principally, though not exclusively, concerned with the axle boxes of railway vehicles, its object being to prevent or greatly reduce the leakage of oil at'the part where the axle enters the box.
According to the invention the box has on the inside, around the opening for the axle, two flanges side by side, one farther than the other from the plane of the opening, the said flanges being separated from each other by a channel whose depth decreases from the part above the opening to the part below the opening. I
The purpose of these flanges is to catch oil flung off the axle and cause the same either to drip off on to the axle or to run down the channel to an oil well at the bottom of the box.
It is not broadly novel to provide flanges round the opening for reducing leakage, the distinctive novel feature of my invention, in its broadest aspect, being the configuration of the flanges whereby the channel merging into a shallow outlet at the bottom is obtained. I
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a vertical section of the axle box in the plane of the axis of the axle. Fig. 2 is an elevation, we larger scale, of the two flanges, seen from the inside of'the box. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the flanges, taken transversely of the opening which they surround, and Fig. 4 is a side view showing one of the flanges. Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are respectively sections of Fig. 2 on the lines V--V, VI- VI and VII-VII.
The axle l in the axle box 2 has upon it an oil flinger 3 and ribs 4 for restraining oil from leaking through the opening where the axle enters the box.
Around the opening In for the axle there are two ribs 5 and 6 side by side, the rib 5 being farther from the plane of the opening than the rib 6. These ribs have between them a channel I, which has its greatest depth at the top, the depth decreasing gradually down the sides, till at the bottom the channel merges into a shallow (o1. ass-5) outlet 8, which is below the level of the oil in an oil well H at the bottom of the box. At the top the flange 5 overhangs the flange 6, and at the bottom it drops away from the same. The edge of the flange 6 is bevelled so that both at the top and at the bottom the rim surface of the flange is inclined downwardly in the direction towards the interior of the box.
Entrance of foreign matter is prevented by a flanged ring 8 on the axle and a felt disk 9.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. In an axle box having an opening for entrance of the axle two flanges around said opening, projecting on the inside from the box wall, and spaced from the rim of said opening, both having at the part above said opening a down-' ward inclination with a narrow inverted channel between them, one of said flanges having also a downward inclination below said opening whereby it forms a pendant lip for the purpose set forth. r

In an axle box having an opening for entrance of the axle two flanges around said opening, projecting on theinside from the box wall and spaced from the rim of said opening, the space between said rim and said flanges being larger above said opening than below said opening, both said flanges having at the part above said opening a downward inclination, with a narrow inverted channel between them, and one of said flanges having also below said opening a downward inclination whereby it forms a pendant lip for the purpose set forth.
3. In an axle box having an opening for entrance of the axle two flanges around said opening, projecting on the inside from the box wall and spaced from the rim of said opening, the space between said rim and said flanges being larger above said opening than below said opening, both said flanges being of a cross section tapering to a downwardly directed edge, said flanges having at the part above said opening a downward inclination, with a narrow inverted channel between them, and one of said flanges having also below said opening a downward inclination whereby it forms a pendant lip for the purpose set forth.
