Description

June 18, 1935. E. ELLSWORTH VETERINARY INSTRUMENT Filed Nov. 25. 1934 2 SheetsSneet l nwnfor Z wZWsnw Attorney June 18, 1935. E. ELLSWORTH VETERINARY INSTRUMENT Filed Nov. 23, 1934 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Inventor ZW ZZZJWOF7% Attorney Patented June 18, 1935" V UNITED" STATES" PATENT OFFICE The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in veterinary instruments and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device-comprising a novel construction, combination andarrangement of parts through the medium of which enemas, for example, may be expeditiously given to cattle, horses and other stock.
Another important object of the invention is to provide an instrument of the aforementioned character comprising novel. means for clamping the rectum in a manner to prevent leakage bu without causing discomfort to the animal.
Other objects of the invention are to provide an instrument of the character described which willbe comparatively simple in construction, strong,
durable, highly efficient and reliable in use, com
pact, light in weight and which may be manufactured at low cost. I
All of the foregoingand still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:--
Figure 1 is a plan View of a veterinary instru-- ment constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is a view in longitudinal section through the instrument.
' end 'a ring 2. The forward"portion of the ring 2 has formed therein an internal groove 3 in which is mounted a tubular annulus of suitable resilient I I or compressible material, preferably rubber, which constitutes a valve seat4.- I I The b ight portion of the frame I has forme thereon a rearwardly extending boss5;and said bight portion is provided with a longitudinal groove or channel 6 for the reception of a tubular stem 1, the rear portion of which is externally threaded, as at 8. Mounted in the rear end of the stem I is a nipple 9 for connection with a flexible conduit from a source of fluid supply.
Return flow of the fluid through the nipple 9 is v prevented by a ball check valve I (see Figure 2) which is mounted in said nipple.
Formed integrally with the forward end of the stem I is a substantially conical head I I through which the passage I2 in said stem 1 also extends. Engaged with the rear end of the head I I is a 1 ring I3 of suitable compressible material, preferably rubber, which is secured in position by a retaining nut I4 which is threaded on the enlarged forward endportion I of the stem I.
A nut I6 is threadedly mounted on the portion 8 of the stem I and engageable with the boss 5 for drawing the head I toward the resilient seat 4 for clamping the rectum therebetween.
In use, the instrument is inserted and the nut I6, which is provided with operating handles I1,
is actuated to clamp the outer end or mouth of the rectum between the elements I3 and 4, thus sealing this point againstleakage of the fluid With without causing discomfort to the animal. a rubber hoseor other suitable conduit connected to the nipple 9 the fluid from the source of supply may then be introduced into the animal through the passage I2, as will beapparent. The check valve I0 prevents return flow of the fluid throughthe stem I. I In Figure 1 of the drawings, a portion of a conduit is indicated by the reference numeral 18.
It is believed that the many advantages of a veterinary instrument constructed in accord ance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although a preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the inve n,
tion as claimed.
What is claimed is:-
A veterinary instrument comprising a substantially U -shaped frame having a ring integral with the open end thereof, the bight portion of the frame having a longitudinally extending groove therein, said ring having a channel in its-inner periphery, a compressible annulus mounted in said channel and having a portion thereof projecting beyond the inner side of said ring and defining a seat, a stem extending through saidgroove and extending through said ring, a frusto- I conical shaped headon said stem, a compressible,
tween, said stem and said head being provided with a fluid passage therein and a clamping nut threadedly mounted on said stem and engageable with thebight portion of the frame for} moving the stem within the frame.
