-BAT HltM UNIT Robert L..Davison, New-York, N. Y., assignor to John B. Pierce Foundation, New York, N.. Y., a corporation of New York Application November 21., 1932, Serial No. 643,589 I M. a 3 ms My present invention relates to building construction and more-particularly to an improved combined bathroom wall unit. I
In connection with factory fabricated units 5 adapted to be assembled to form a complete structure, as for example a complete dwelling house, the walls and partitionsare built in unit panel construction adapted to be assembled on the job with the minimum of labor and at a minimum of cost, and the erection of the walls and partitions results in defining rooms or chambers of any desired shape and size, depending on the size of the building desired.
One of the necessary rooms in a building, such as adwelling house, is a kitchenor'a bathroom' or both, and, to obtain the greatest efliciencyand' simplicity of plumbing, it has been'found desirable and feasible to locate the bathroom and kitchen on opposite sides of a single partition wall. The plumbing for the kitchen and bathroom fixtures may be made exceedinglysimple in construction, andas it is advantageous to make variousfabricated units in as l'argea size as is possible in viewof the convenience in shipping and handling, I have utilized in connection with' the building construction, and particularly 'in connection with the subject matter of my present invention, a so-called factory fabricated rough plumbing unit which forms the subject matter of my co-pending application Serial No. 643,324
filed Nov. 19th, 1932, entitled-Factory fabricated rough plumbing unit. 1 i
With a factory fabricated rough plumbing unit such as described in-the applicationabove referred to, all of the plumbing outlets are concentrated at but a single point and the unit may be arranged as an integral part of the present invention. Under certain circumstances, the wall itself may be dispensed withandthefixtures forming the unitsof the present ,inventionimay. be utilized as a partitioning means between the bathroom and the kitchen. a
In carrying out my invention, I preferablyutilize a single unit composed of atoilet or. hopper element and a wash basin element, both assembled side by side into a unitary, structureland occupying a portion of one side of the bathroom. Where the partition wall between the bathroom and kitchen is dispensed with, "theback of the two units acts as a portion of the wall of the kitchen. It is preferable, however, to utilize at least one panel'cf a partition as adividing mem ber between one end of the bathtub in the bathroom and the-kitchen.
Into the unit thus fabricated, is likewise assembled the factory fabricated waste line unit above referred to, all connected to a vertical riser element, and also incorporated in this unit struc-;
'ture are the usual supply, pipes for hotand cold water, both for the toilet and bath, and also the 5 wash basin. v 7
An object'of the invention, therefore, is-the provision of a wall structure serving asthe common wall between a bathroom and a kitchen and incorporating improved features for both bath- 10 in which'is located and supported awall hung.
toilet fixture having the usual or other approved siphon action and the siphon element of. which 25 forms part of the waste line. The particular features" of the construction of the siphon-like action of the wall hung feature'as distinguished from the floor type of toilet does not directly concern my present invention, although it is incorporated therein, but forms the subject matter of a separate and distinct patent application.
In the more preferred embodiment the wall unit comprises oppositely disposed uni-planar plate members serving respectively as the facing 5 for the kitchen and the bath room, such unit being provided for the, mounting of plumbing; units for a kitchen, such as a sink, one or more I laundry tubs arranged on one sideof the wall, and plumbing units such as a wash bowl, toilet;v 40, etc; arranged on the other side of; the wallstructure.
My invention also provides a wall unit comprising spaced oppositely disposed unb-planar plate members serving as wall elements, the space 45 vbetween. the wall elements affordinga housing for concealing and supporting a flush tank.
, My'wall unit also provides for the structural A combination therewith of vertically arranged shelves-and cabinet structure for the bathroomsideof the unit, which feature may be utilized singly or conibinedly with. vertically arranged; y shelves for a cupboard on the kitchenside of.
the unit.
Such cabinet structure may also be combingwf for -housing and concealing suitable illuminating means.
Such cabinet or cupboard features may be em-.
ployed with or without the flush tank support, and also with or without the plumbing unit, and also with or without the fixture attachment feature, above referred to.
Other objects and novel features of the construction and arrangement of parts comprising the device will appear as the-description of the invention progresses.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating a preferred embodiment Fig. 1 is a sectional plan view of bathroom units, taken on the line ll of Fig. 2; P
Fig. 2 is a front elevation, partly in section, of the units illustrated in Fig. 1;

Fig. 6 is a sectional elevation on the line 66 of'Fig. 2; and
Fig. 7 is a sectional plan view on the line 'I! of Fig. 6. f
Referring to the drawings, and more particularly -to Figs. 1 and 2, the unit comprises a uniplanar plate member H and a thereto attached end elevation on the line frame work, described more fully hereinafter;
such uni-planar plate member being arranged to receive at selected locations a wash basin and toilet, and their respective waste piping, referred to moreparticularly hereinafter, whereby such bath room fixtures are respectively supported by the uni-planar plate member and the frame work of the unit.
Figs. 1 and 2 also indicate a wall lli extending transversely to the unit, also a wall [3 spaced from the wall i0 and also extending transversely to the wall ll the walllil is shown to indicate a closed type'of bath room, a door for which is indicated at H.
a plurality of panel sections of the character set forth and claimed in my copending application Serial #591,395, filed Feb. 6th, 1932, entitled Factory fabricated partition and ceiling con- 'struction, now U. S. Patent # 1,9 60,575. granted usual fixtures in the (bathroom as well as the usual fixtures in the kitchen. f Preferably, the factory fabricated waste line unit is arranged in therear portion of the present unit and lies adjacent to and parallel with the partition wall ii and is directed to be connected to the toilet 16, the wash basin l1, and the bathr I mirrors 46,.be'ingaflorded by the presence of ,a

and 46.
2,004,933 1 with suitable spacing, above or below, or both, is attached by welding or in any other suitable the limits of the framework l9 and behind the ,front wa1l2li is arranged the flush tank 24 connected at its lower end to the inlet of the wall toilet 16 by the elbow 326. The operating handle for the tank 24 extends outwardly through the front plate2ll, as indicated by the numeral 26. Above the flush tank 24 and within the limits of the right hand side of the unit forming the subjectmatter of the present invention, are arranged a pluralityof adjustable shelves 21 and the front of the right hand end-is provided with doors 28. Above theshelves 21 and the doors 23' a and extending across the fullwidth of the entire unit, see Figs. 5 and 6 is a finished plate 23, also and preferably of metal.
The lower portion ofthe left hand sideof the unit is provided with a removable door 30, provided with a knobil and hinges 32, finishing a closure for a compartment 33 beneath the wash basin l1, and in such compartment is housed the trap 34 connected to'the washbasin i1 and to e The lower portion I of the left hand side of the unit and below the compartment :3 is provided with'a longitudinal horizontal passage 35 see Figs. ,5 and 2, in which is housed the horizontal pipe 36, extending from the bathtub l8 to the outlet 31 of the waste line unit, such I pipe also being connected to the vertical riser 33 of such waste line unit. Extending upwardly from the horizontal pipe 36 isa pipe containing interis connected to the trap 34 of the wash basin I1 and the otherarm of which is closed by a cap I 7 4|]. Whendesired, such'cap maybe removedand The walls III, II, "and "may be made up of mediate its ends'a Y-fltting 39, one arm of which example, a set of tubs,,or the ordinary waste line. Extending upwardly fromthe Y-fltting 33 is a riser-42 connected with a horizontal pipe 43, which in turnis connected to the vertical riser 39. Also in the horizontal pipe 36 and accessible from within the compartment 33, is the usual trap 44.
Above thewash basin ll'is arranged a reentrant portion which may carry a mirror 43 and-side" mirrors 46, the'side mirrors 46 being preferably To still further insureeconomyin construction, hmged' as Indicated at as may be the I have utilized a factory fabricated waste line unit l5, such as forms the subject matter of my' aforesaid co-pending application Serial No. 643,-
324, such unit beingrelativelylight in weight and. factory assembled as a unit, and serves both the mirror 45, which is hinged at 41, see Figs. 3 and 4, toallow access to shelves "43 located within the limits of the The mirrors or equivalent members 46, 46 ex' tend from a point above the wash basin I I! upwardly tothe lower edge of the member 23. The member 23,"together'with the back of the unit unit and behind the elements 46 and thetop: thereof forms a compartment, in 'which'is located a source of illumination 6|, as an electric lamp and reflector, and the light from;
such lamp illuminates the mirror '46 and also the transparentmember 62. It is possible also toilluminate the mirror 46 from the-sides by making the members 46 transparent and placing behind the same in a compartment 53 formed in the unit, a source of illumination, as the electric bulb 54, see Fig. 5.
The wash basin I1 and the bathtub l8, are supplied with hot and/or cold water from the hot and cold water supply pipes 55 and 56, respectively, which form an integral part of the unit; the hot or cold or combined hot and cold water is controlled by the operating device 51 mounted on a panel 58 at the side of the unit. The fiush tank 24 is supplied with water from the plumbing unit pursuant to regular or other approved practice.
The entire unit as thus described is assembled at the factory andshipped to the place where the same is to be installed, the only operation necessary being the forcing of the upper end of the waste and air-vent pipe 38 through a hole in the ceiling and connecting to the discharging waste line the outlet 31, of the upper fioor, see Fig. 2, and correspondingly for any additional floors.
Proper connections of the ends 31, 38 having been made to the waste line of the house, and the hot and cold water pipes 55, 55 being connected to the water supply, the entire installation is complete. This represents a radical saving in the cost of installation asvbut one hole is cut in the fioor and because of the fact that all traps, as the trap 44, are contained within the unit, the unit may be placed in a building in which the floors are merely slabs of concrete or similar material and the use of or necessity for suspended ceilings to accommodate the piping is totally avoided.
Where it is not desired to have a bathtub l8 in the same compartment as the wash basin l'l and the toilet [6, the same may be dispensed with by stopping off an appropriate section of the waste line unit l5, and therefore the compartment or room in which the wash basin I1 and toilet l6 are contained need not be greater in extent'than the front face of such units. In such case, it is quite feasible to eliminate the panel partition H for its entire length of the bath or wash room, although it may be found preferable to retain one of the panels of the panel partitions and utilize the rear walls of the toilet and wash basin units as the division wall between the bathroom and the kitchen.
The structure embodying my invention, therefore, includes a number of coordinated features of individual novelty. The entire unit is selfcontained, including waste line unit, hot and cold water pipes, electric conduits, illuminating fixtures and the like, and all parts other than the toilet and wash basin are contained within 'the limits of the unit. The-unit not only forms a housing for the various parts above enumerated, but also afords closet and illuminating features, as well as a housing for the fiush tank for the toilet. In connection with the wash basin, the unit is recessed from the wash basin upward and the recessed portions may be faced with mirrors or left plain as desired, and an illuminating fixture formed integral with and housed within the unit and above the recessed portions adequately illuminates'the mirrors and/or the faces of the I recesses.
Further, the. unit houses an illuminating fixture or acts as an illuminating fixture to illuminate the bath that may be associated with and at one. side of'the unit so that'when curtains are-drawn to screen the bath tub from the remaindenof the bathroom fixture, the space above the bath tub" is illuminated by the illuminating device contained within the unit through the transparent or translucent partition 50, see Figs. 1 and 2.
The wasteline unit housed within the limits of the unit is so located and is of such character as to permit the use of a wall hung toilet while yet retaining the siphon action of the toilet. which is a feature not to be found in any other construction of which I am aware. The unit while adapted for installation in a bathroom or wash room and ordinarily fitting against a wall thereof may be utilized as a substitute for the wall, and in such case, acts itself as the guiding wall or as the major portion of the dividing wall between two rooms as for example between a bathroom and a kitchen in a dwelling house.
Various other features are inherent in my construction and the novelty of such features will be apparent as the description of the invention is studied by those skilled in the art.
I claim:
1. As an improved article of manufacture, a wall structure comprising oppositely disposed uniplanar plate membersserving respectively as the front and rear wall structure and affording therebetween an open space, a wash basin fixture located at the front wall structure, a unitary frame secured to and supporting the front and rear wall structure and the wash basin fixture, and supply piping and waste piping for the stated fixture disposed within the spacing between the front and rear wall structure.
