Abstract
The machine comprises: a path of travel for the fabric (t) to be treated; a device (1) to feed the fabric and a device (5) to remove the fabric; along said path of travel a plurality of rotating drums (3A, 3B, 3C, 3D), inclined in relation to the horizontal, made to rotate by control devices, through which the fabric is made to travel; and between adjacent drums, means to transfer (7, 9) the fabric from a drum upstream to a drum downstream. Inclination of the drums is modifiable, individually for each drum, as a function of the operating conditions of the machine.
Description
- The present invention relates to a machine for continuous treatment of fabrics, for example for drying treatment, above all for treating cord fabrics.
- More specifically, the present invention relates to a machine of the type comprising a combination of: a path of travel for the fabric to be treated; a device to feed the fabric and a device to remove the fabric; along said path of travel a plurality of rotating drums inclined in relation to the horizontal, through which said fabric is made to travel to be subjected to a continuous treatment process; and between adjacent drums means to transfer the fabric from a drum upstream to a drum downstream.
- A machine for continuous treatment of fabric of the type mentioned above, comprising a plurality of drums in series along the path of travel of the fabric in the Italian patent application n. PR99A00002, filed on Dec. 1, 1999.
- The present invention relates to improvements to a machine of the type mentioned above in order to optimize the characteristics and solve some technical problems.
- In particular, an object of the present invention is to produce a machine of the type mentioned, in which there is more accurate control over the movement of the fabric.
- This and other objects and advantages, which shall become clear to those skilled in the art by reading the text below, are in substance attained with a machine of the type mentioned above, in which inclination of said drums is modifiable, individually for each drum, as a function of the operating conditions of the machine. By varying the inclination of each drum it is possible to modify the speed with which the fabric travels through the drum, unloading the fabric at a greater or lesser speed. In this way the path of travel of the fabric through the machine is controlled more efficaciously.
- Moreover, with the machine according to the invention it is possible to establish variable inclinations to the various drums positioned in sequence along the path of travel, to take account of the greater or lesser ease of the fabric to run through each drum. For example, if the fabric has a decreasing water content from the start towards the end of the path of travel, the drums farther upstream can be inclined to a greater extent to favour sliding of the fabric, while the drums farther downstream may be inclined to a lesser extent, as the fabric with less water runs with greater ease.
- The same inventive concept may be applied to machines for discontinuous treatment, that is in which a bolt of fabric is closed in a ring joining the two ends of the bolt and is made to circulate along a closed path of travel for a certain period of time, after which the bolt is opened again and removed from the machine. A single drum or a plurality of drums may be positioned along the closed path of travel. In the first case the bolt of cloth with its ends joined is made to circulate repeatedly through the single drum, while in the second case it is made to circulate repeatedly through the various drums in series.
- In the case of discontinuous treatment of the fabric, the machine according to the invention, in substance, has a path of travel for the fabric to be treated and along said path of travel at least one rotating drum, inclined in relation to the horizontal, made to rotate by activating devices, through which the fabric is made to travel to be subjected to a treatment process. Characteristically, inclination of said at least one drum is modifiable as a function of the operating conditions of the machine. In this way inclination may for example vary in time during the same treatment cycle, so that the fabric always slides through the drum with the required ease, even when the bolt of fabric has a high water content. For example, if during treatment of a single bolt the water content decreases gradually from the start to the end of treatment, horizontal inclination of the single drum through which the fabric is made to travel may be gradually decreased.
- According to a particularly advantageous embodiment of the invention, even when treatment is of the discontinuous type a plurality of drums in series, for example two or more drums, may be positioned along the path of travel. In this case, just as in the case of continuous treatment, means to transfer the fabric from a drum upstream to a drum downstream are provided, and the drums are made to rotate by control devices, the fabric being made to travel through said drums in series. Moreover, inclination of said drums is modifiable, individually for each drum, as a function of the operating conditions of the machine.
- According to a practical embodiment of the invention, each of said drums is supported on a horizontal axis of oscillation to modify inclination of the drum in relation to the horizontal, and is connected to means to regulate inclination.
- In order not to modify the position of the inlet of the drum through which the fabric is fed, it is preferable for the horizontal axis of oscillation to be positioned in proximity to the inlet of the respective drum and for the means to regulate inclination to be connected to the drum in proximity to its outlet.
- The means to regulate inclination comprise at least a supporting member to which the drum is connected, directly or indirectly, said supporting member which can be raised and lowered by means of a respective actuator. The supporting member may be a belt, a cable, a chain or preferably a raising and lowering rod. If necessary the rod may be double, if necessary fitted with two actuators, one for each rod.
- Further advantageous characteristics of the machine according to the invention are indicated in the attached claims and shall be described hereunder with reference to some examples of embodiment.
- The invention shall be better understood by reading the description hereunder and with reference to the attached drawings, which show practical non-limiting embodiments of the invention. More specifically, they show:
- FIG. 1 a plan view of a machine according to the invention;

- FIG. 3 a section according to III-III in FIG. 1; and
- FIGS. 4 and 5 plan views of two machines according to the invention in a second and third embodiment.
- With initial reference to Figs. from1 to 3, the machine has an inlet 1 for continuously feeding a fabric T, by means of a feed device 1, constituted in the example shown by a reel. The fabric T is made to travel through a series of machine sections, indicated with 2A, 2B, 2C, 2D, each of which comprises a respective rotating
drum 3A-3D. Thesections 2A-2D and the rotating drums are positioned along a feed path of the fabric. In the example shown four sections are provided with four respective drums substantially the same as one another, positioned side by side. One of the sections and more specificallysection 2A with thedrum 3A is shown in greater detail in FIGS. 2 and 3 and will be described hereunder. It must be understood that the number of sections and drums may vary according to the complexity and dimension of the machine. - The fabric T which has travelled through the
various sections 2A-2D and therefore thevarious drums 3A-3D in sequence, is removed from the machine by a removal device generically indicated with 5 and constituted (in the example shown) by a further reel. In eachdrum 3A-3D, through which the fabric travels along the feed path, the fabric T is subjected to mechanical and, where required, heat treatment, of a type substantially per se known and similar to the treatment described in the aforesaid patent application PR99A00002. - With reference to FIGS. 2 and 3, in the
section 2A (and similarly in theremaining sections drum 3A is positioned with its axis A-A inclined in relation to the horizontal, for example by about 5-20° and preferably about 5-15°, without these values being considered binding. The cord fabric T is fed inside thedrum 3A bytransfer means 6 which comprise, in the example shown, areel 7 motorized by a motor only shown schematically in FIG. 2 and marked therein with 7M. In addition to thereel 7 the transfer means 6 are provided with aduct 9 inside which, through anannular distributor 9A or equivalent means, a flow of air is fed which comes from a blower and if necessary a heating battery, not shown. In substance, theassembly duct 9 draws the fabric T mechanically fed by thereel 7 or in any case facilitates its running along theduct 9 until it reaches the inside of the rotatingdrum 3A. In the example shown theduct 9 has a curvilinear form and leads into thedrum 3A through aninlet 11 in the drum, positioned on the side of thesection 2A in which the transfer means 6 are positioned. - The
inlet 11 of thedrum 3A is located at the highest end of thedrum 3A, which is equipped, at the opposite and lower end, with anoutlet 12, through which the fabric T is delivered from the rotatingdrum 3A to drop into acollection tub 13. From thiscollection tub 13 the fabric is picked up by thereel 7 of thesubsequent section 2B to be fed into the rotatingdrum 3B. A similar device is provided insections 2B, 2C. As can be seen in FIG. 1, in thelast section 2D of the machine, vice versa, the fabric is taken from therespective tub 13 by areel 7B which transfers the fabric to theremoval device 5. - The
drum 3A (and similarly theother drums 3B-3D) are supported at the highest end by means of a hinge withhorizontal axis 15, in the plan projection the axis of the hinge is at 90° in relation to the axis A-A of thedrum 3A. At the opposite lower end, thedrum 3A is hung on a pair ofrods joint 19A, 19B to anactuator 21A, 21B. Theactuator 21A, 21B is represented in the form of a mechanical jack, but may also be a piston-cylinder actuator or any other type of suitable mechanism. Similarly, therods actuators 21A, 21B may be constituted by respective winches or even by a single winch. - At the opposite end in relation to the
joints 19A, 19B eachrod frame 25 of the rotatingdrum 3A. With this layout inclination of the axis A-A of the rotatingdrum 3A may be modified by adjusting therods actuators 21A, 21B for the purposes described in greater detail hereunder. - The supporting
frame 25 of the rotatingdrum 3A has ashaft 27 parallel to the axis A-A of the rotatingdrum 3A, keyed on which are twotoothed wheels 28 meshing with correspondingtoothed ring gears 29 integral with thedrum 3A. The drum also rests on theframe 25 by means of rollers or wheels not shown, substantially in the same manner described in the Italian patent application PR99A00002. Alternatively to the toothed wheels friction wheels may be used, with surfaces in material suitable to transmit motion by simple friction. In this case, the ring gears may be omitted. In general, rotating movement may be provided with any suitable means. Theshaft 27 receives rotating movement from amotor shaft 31 controlled by a motor 33 (FIG. 2), through auniversal joint 35 interposed between theshafts universal joint 35 is substantially in line with theaxis 15 of oscillation of thedrum 3A, so that inclination of thedrum 3A can be varied without this being prevented by the mechanical transmission between themotor 33 and thedrum 3A. - The
motor 33 makes thedrum 3A rotate around its axis A-A. The rotating movement may be a continuous, intermittent or alternate rotating movement, or a combination of these movements, according to the requirements of the work cycle and according to the settings made by the operator on a specific control unit, indicated schematically with 37 (FIG. 2). Other systems to transmit rotating motion to the drums may be used, as only their suitability to allow inclination of the drum to be modified is relevant. - The mechanical parts relative to supporting the drums and their rotation are substantially the same for the different sections and are omitted in the plan view in FIG. 1 to simplify the drawing.
- The
tub 13 is resting in an tilting manner on the supportingframe 25 of thedrum 3A, so that it can oscillate around anaxis 39 parallel to theaxis 15 of oscillation of thedrum 3A. At the opposite end in relation to where it rests on theframe 25, the tub is attached to atie rod 41, the top end of which is connected to abracket 43 integral with the fixedframe 45 of the machine, to which theactuators 21A, 21B are also connected. A sensor, for example aload cell 47, is interposed between thebracket 43 and thetie rod 41, to detect the tractive force applied to thetie rod 41, due to the weight of the fabric in thetub 13, for the purposes described below in greater detail. - The
load cell 47 is interfaced with thecontrol unit 37 just as theactuators 21A, 21B are interfaced with it. - The
tie rod 41, therelative bracket 43 and theload cell 47 may be double, just as therods drum 3A, although this is not absolutely necessary as the tub has a smaller mass than thedrum 3A. - The layout described with reference to FIGS. 2 and 3 for the
section 2A is repeated for theother sections control unit 37, unique for all the sections, is interfaced with the actuators and sensors of each section. - Operation of the machine described above is as follows.
- By means of the feeding device1 of the fabric T, the latter is fed to the
reel 7 of thesection 2A and through of theduct 9 it is fed into thedrum 3A. Here it is subjected to mechanical treatment through the continuous or alternating rotary movement of the drum, the inside of which may be equipped with suitable ribbing or similar. The fabric T moves gradually along thedrum 3A, thanks to its inclination on the horizontal and is delivered through theoutlet 12 into thetub 13 ofsection 2A. From here the fabric is picked up by thereel 7 of thesuccessive section 2B where the fabric is subjected to similar treatment in thedrum 3B and so on until it is unloaded into thetub 13 ofsection 2D, from which the completely treated fabric T is removed by thereels - The speed of each
reel 7, of the feeding device 1 and of theremoval device 5 must be controlled in order to obtain gradual advance of the fabric through the various drums and to prevent excessive accumulation of fabric in eachtub 13. For this purpose, the quantity of fabric (in weight) accumulated in eachtub 13 is detected by theload cells 47. On the basis of this information thecontrol unit 37 controls the speed of thereels 7. Moreover, when the unloading speed of the fabric T from eachdrum respective actuators 21A, 21B, which raise or lower therods drum 3A-3D in relation to the horizontal there is an increase in the speed with which the fabric is unloaded from the drum into thetub 13. The opposite occurs by decreasing the angle of inclination in relation to the horizontal. - According to a modified embodiment of the invention, a load cell or a pair of load cells may be provided (in addition to or to replace the load cell47) associated with the
rods joints 19A, 19B, and indicated with 48. In this way, it is possible to detect the load on therods load cell 47, to control theactuators 21A, 21B and hence to modify inclination of the drum. For example, if an excessive quantity of fabric is detected in the drum, inclination of the drum can be increased to increase the speed with which the fabric T is unloaded from the drum. The speed of thereel 7 downstream of the drum will be increased correspondingly to prevent excessive accumulation of fabric in thetub 13. Alternatively, instead of being interlocked directly to the signal from the load cell associated with therods reel 7 may be interlocked to the signal coming from the load cell 47 (if provided in combination). The signals coming from the load cells on thetie rod 41 and/or on therods control unit 37, the air flow in eachduct 9 as a function of the transfer speed of the fabric T from one section to the other. - FIG. 4 shows a second embodiment in a schematic plan view. In this case each
section 2A-2C (three in the example) is aligned according to a rectilinear layout. The layouts and operations of the means to control inclination of the drums of each section remain unvaried. - FIG. 5 shows a similar plan view to the view in FIG. 1, of a machine similar to the previous machines, but with a different layout of the
rotating drums 3A-3D. The same numbers are used to indicate the same or corresponding parts to those in the previous embodiment. The substantial difference consists in the fact that while in FIG. 1 theinlet 11 of each drum is positioned on the same side as theoutlet 12 of the drum upstream, in FIG. 5 all theinlets 11 of thedrums 3A-3D are positioned on one side and all theoutlets 12 are positioned on the opposite side. This requires a longer duct and a similar layout to the one described in PR99A00002, which should be referred to for greater details. In substance, theduct 9 extends longitudinally along the length of therespective drum 3A-3D. - Also in this case each
section 2A-2D is produced as in FIGS. 2 and 3 as regards layout and operation of the means to control inclination of the drum of each section. - It must be understood that mixed solutions are possible, where the
sections 2 and the drums 3 are partly aligned as in FIG. 4 and partly side by side as in FIG. 2 and/or in FIG. 5. - It is understood that the drawing merely shows a non-limiting example of embodiment of the invention, the forms and layouts of which may vary without however departing from the conceptual scope of the invention. Any reference numbers in the attached claims are provided merely for the purpose of facilitating reading in the light of the description above and the attached drawings and do not limit the scope of protection in any manner.
Claims (14)
1. A machine to treat fabrics, comprising:
a path of travel for the fabric to be treated;
along said path of travel at least one rotating drum, inclined in relation to the horizontal, made to rotate by control devices, through which said fabric is made to travel to be subjected to a treatment process;
characterized in that inclination of said at least one drum is modifiable as a function of the operating conditions of the machine.
2. Machine as claimed in claim 1 , characterized in that a plurality of drums in series are positioned along said path of travel, that means to transfer the fabric from a drum upstream to a drum downstream are provided between adjacent drums, that the drums are made to rotate by control means; that inclination of said drums is modifiable, independently for each drum, as a function of the operating conditions of the machine; and that the fabric is made to travel through said drums in series.

Machine as claimed in claim 1 , characterized in that it comprises a device to feed the fabric and a device to remove the fabric to feed said fabric continuously along said path of travel through said drum(s) positioned in series along the path of travel, the fabric being subjected to a continuous treatment process.
4. Machine as claimed in claim 1 , characterized in that each of said drums is supported on a horizontal axis of oscillation to modify inclination of the drum in relation to the horizontal, and is connected to means to regulate inclination.
5. Machine as claimed in claim 4 , characterized in that said horizontal axis of oscillation is positioned in proximity to the inlet of the respective drum and said means to regulate inclination are connected to the drum in proximity of its outlet.
6. Machine as claimed in claim 4 , characterized in that said means to regulate inclination comprise at least one supporting member to which the drum is connected, said supporting member which can be raised and lowered by means of a respective actuator.
7. Machine as claimed in claim 6 , characterized in that said at least one supporting member is formed of a rod hinged at one end to the respective drum and connected at the opposite end to said actuator.
8. Machine as claimed in claim 1 , characterized in that a tub to collect the fabric is positioned at the outlet of said drums, associated with first means to detect the quantity of fabric contained in the tub, the inclination of the relative drum being varied according to the quantity detected by said first detecting means, to vary the delivery speed of the fabric.
9. Machine as claimed in claim 8 , characterized in that the transfer speed of the fabric by said transfer means is controlled as a function of the quantity of fabric detected by said first detecting means associated with said tubs.
10. Machine as claimed in claim 1 , characterized in that second detecting means are associated with each drum to detect the quantity of fabric contained in the drum.
11. Machine as claimed in claim 10 , characterized in that inclination of said drums is controlled as a function of the quantity of fabric inside the drums detected by said second detecting means.
12. Machine as claimed in claim 10 , characterized in that the transfer speed of said transfer means is controlled as a function of the quantity of fabric detected by said second detecting means.
13. Machine as claimed in claim 8 , characterized in that said first and/or said second detecting means determine the weight of the fabric in said tub and/or in said drum.
14. Machine as claimed in at least claim 8 , characterized in that each of said tubs is supported by a supporting frame of the relative drum and by a respective tie rod.
