' 4 Claims.
VThe invention has for its object the provision of a shoeshine box equipped with a collapsible footrest which is concealed within the box when not in use. This enables: the box to be used as a seat and also as an attractive article of furnishing. The salient feature of the invention is that the seat portion of the box is hinged to compose a lid which is connected by mechanism with the footrest so as to automatically raise it to an upstanding position for use. A hinged ap at the front of the box is incorporated as a part of the mechanism and has locking means whereby the footrest is firmly secured when elevated.
The box is furnished with pockets for holding the usual accoutrement common to shoeshine outfits. The accompanying drawing is illustrative of the invention and the manner in which it is used. In this drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of the shoeshine box.
Figure 2 is a front elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view on line 3``3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a similar sectional View depicting the box opened for use of the footrest.
Figure 5 is an elevation of a guide that forms a part of the mechanism for operating the footrest.
Figure 6 is an edge View thereof.
Figure '7 is a front View of the footrest.
Figure 8 is a sectional detail of one of the front corner portions of the box illustrating the locking means for the footrest.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in each ofthe figures throughout the drawing.
In `the drawing the reference numeral II) denotes the front of the box body and I' and I0" the sides thereof. The back II is supplied with an interior rack II divided into pockets for brushes et cetera.
The major part of the front I 0 is fashioned into a flap I2 hinged at I 2' so as to swing outwardly. Locking means are associated with the flap to secure it when open. The locking means preferably consists of a bar I3 pivoted at I 3' to the flap and supplied with a longitudinal slot I4 notched at its free end as at I 4'. A pin I5 inwardly projects from a. bracket I on the sidewallA IU and loosely engages the slot so that as the flap is opened the notch will engage the pin and thus secure it in this position. The bar is raised by hand to release the ap for closing. The locking mechanism is shown in Figure 8.
The top of the box body slopes upwardly from the front and the lid I6 is hinged at the rear at I6' so as to swing backwardly to the position shown in Figure 4. The lid is furnished withhor-zontal slats I6 to provide a seat. r1 ?he'footrast consists of a standard I'I having an integral footpie'ce I1. at its upper end and at its lower end a transverse base bar I8 also integrally constructed and supplied with end trunnions I8' lodged in the sidewalls I0 and I adjacent the lower part ofthe front ID. This mounting enables the footrest to swing from its collapsed position shown in Figure 3 to its upright position shown in Figure 4 in which it projects out of the box.
A link I9 connects the footrest to the flap `which in turn is connected by a link 2D to the lower end of a rocker 2l. The rocker is swingable about-a stud 22 xed to a bracket 23 attached to the side-wall I0". The stud is lodged in a slot 2| in order that the rocker may also have a slight lengthwise movement attendant upon its swinging.
A pin 24 is fixed to the upper end of the rocker and loosely engaged in a slot 25 of the guide 26- which obliquely extends with the top of the box. This guide consists of a strap having offset ends by which it is fastened to the side wall I0" in .stud 22 accompanied by a slight lengthwise movement. Ifhelower end vof the rocker urges the link 20 to open the iiap. Since the footrest is connected to the flap it is raised thereby. When the lid is fully opened the footrest assumes the vertical position shown in Figure 4, in which positon it is locked by the bar I3. Upon release of this bar the lid can be closed, which automatically lowers the footrest.
What I claim iszi 1. The combination in a shoeshine box, of a box body having an open top, a lid hinged thereto forming a closure for said open top, a footrest swingably mounted within the body and assuming a reclining position when the lid is closed, a rocker mounted in the body, mechanism connecting an end of the rocker to the lid apart from its hinge, a hinged flap forming a part of the front of the body, and link mechanism connecting the other end of the rocker and the footrest to the flap apart from its hinge.
2. The combination in a shoeshine box, of a box body having an open top, a lid hinged thereto forming a closure for said open top, a footrest swingably mounted within the body and assuming a. reclining position when the lid is closed, a rocker mounted in the body, a bar connecting an end of the rocker to the lid apart from its hinge, a. hinged ap forming a. part of the front of the body, a link connecting the other end of the rocker to said flap apart from its hinge, and a member linking the footrest to the flap apart from its hinge.
3. The combination in a shoeshine box, of a box body having an open top, a lid hinged thereto forming a closure for said open top, a footrest swingably mounted within the body and assuming a reclining position when the lid is closed,
an elongated rocker pivoted intermediate of its.
end of the rocker to the ilap apart from its hinge, and a link connecting the footrest to the flap apart from its hinge.
4. A cabinet having a lid pivoted to swing up and back and having the upper part of the front wall pivoted to swing forward and down, a lever in the cabinet pivoted intermediate its ends and having one end near the top of the cabinet, a link connecting the end of the lever near the top of the, cabinet, to a point on the klid forward of the axis about which it'swings and in back of the lever, another link connecting the other end of the lever to a point vonthe front wall above the axis about which it swings, a foot rest carried by a support mounted to swing about a horizontal axis crossing the forward part of the cabinet near the bottom, and a third link connecting the pivoted part of the front wall to the foot rest support to swing the foot rest up and forward when the front of the cabinet is swung forward and down by the opening of thelid:
