UNITED STATES- FRED C. IMMELE, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
OHILDS TOILET SEAT.
Application filed August 24, 1927. Serial No. 215,136.
My invention relates to toilet seats and more particularly to childrens toilet seats. It is a purpose of my invention to provide a toilet seat of the above mentioned character that is made so that the same can be substituted for the usual cover member provided on ordinary toilet seats, and which will have the appearance of the ordinary cover member when in down position.
My improved childs toilet seat comprises a seat portion and a back supporting portion hinged thereto, said back supporting portion preferably being in the form of a lid or cover member for the seat. It is a purpose 5 of my invention to provide, in a device of the above mentioned character, guard means comprising side members hinged to the back supporting portion, and engaging the seat portion when in operative position, and a transverse member carried by one of said side members and detachably engaging the other side member.
The side members are preferably in the form of frames, and are preferablyprovided with resilient means for urging the side members away from each other, thereby tending to hold the transverse portion of the guard means in engagement with a suitable formation on one of the side frames. The resilient means furthermore tend to swing the side frames into a divergent relation when the device is unfolded and to swing the transverse guard member about its pivotal axis on one of the frames, so that these parts are out of the way of the child when the same is being placed on the seat.
The seat portion is preferably providedwith a portion of greater thickness at the rear thereof for hin'gingthe cover, thereto, and said cover is recessed to accommodate the guard means in folded condition. An important feature of the invention is the provision of recesses in the thickened portion of the seat to accommodate the portions of the side frames that engage with clips on the seat portion when in operative position. The frames are preferably provided with offset portions engaging these clips, and said offset portions enter said recesses when the device is folded. up, to thus permit the frames to be so made that the same will engage the seat portion with the back supporting portion or cover member in an upright position.
It is another purpose of the invention to provide a device of the above mentioned character with a seat portion having the opening therein adjustable'to different sizes. This is preferably accomplished by providing an inset in the seat portion that is annular in form and which is detachable therefrom to enlarge the opening in the seat.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the description of the drawings proceeds. I desire to have it understood, however, that I do not intend to limit myself to the exact details shown or described, but that I intend to include as part of my invention all such obvious changes and modifications as would occur to a person skilled in this art and as would fall within the scope of the claims.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective View of my improved childs toilet seat;
Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof with the cover in raised position;
Fig. 3 is a section of the seat and cover por- '1 tion with the guard omitted, the section being taken on a line corresponding to the line 33 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4: is an enlarged perspective view of one of the holding clips on the seat portion showing a fragment of one of the side frames;
Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary .sectional view taken substantially on the line 55 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary bottom plan view of the seat portion.
Referring in detail to the drawings, my improved childs toilet seat comprises 7 a seat portion 10 and a cover portion 11 serving also as a back supporting orback-rest portion. The seat portion 10 is provided at the rear end thereof with a thickened portion 12, which maybe of any desired construction, being shown as being made of aply of material of'a thickness corresponding to the thickness of the cover memberll. The cover member 11 is hinged to the seat portion 10 by means of the hinges 13, and a shoulder 14 is provided at the junction of thethick ened portion 12 and the main body portion of the seat 10. f r r The cover member 11 is provided with a depression or recess 15 in theunder side thereof, said recess being substantially rectangular I and opening into the face of the cover member lying adjacent the. shoulder 14. Mounted in the recess 15 near the opposite sides thereof are the hinge members 16 that are provided with the tubular portions 17. Guard means for preventing the child from falling off the device are provided, said means comprising a pair of side frame members 18 having the vertically extending portions 19 pivotally mounted in the tubular portions 17 of the hinge member 16. The side frames are substantially rectangular, the lower members 20' of each of the frames, being inclined slightly downwardly toward the forward ends of the frames, and being provided with downwardly offset portions 21. Said side frames are further provided with forwardly extending offsets 22 adjacent theupper forward corner of each thereof. The guard means further comprise a transversely extending guard member 23, having an eye port-ion 24 pivotal- 1y mount-ed on one of the forward offsets 22 and having a hook portion 25 engaging the other forwar'doffset 22. Thus the frames are pivotally mounted on the back supporting or cover member 11 and are adapted to form an enclosure with the transverse member 23,
which may be in the form of a sheet metal bar or strap, and the back supporting member 11.
Clips 26 are mounted on theseat portion 10 and'are formed into a hooklike shape and cut away so as to form the hooks 27' and 28 with the intervening space or slot 29. The book 28 is somewhat wider than hook 27. The frames 18 are engaged with the clips 26' so that the offsets 21 extend under the hooks 28 and the forward vertically extending portions 30 of the frames extend through the slots or openings 29, when the parts are in operative position.
Resilient means are provided for urging the frames 18 to swing in a direction away from each other, in the form of coil springs 31, coiled around the vertically extending portions 19" of the frames, and having a hook 32 at one end of each thereof engaging around the'lower mem- -ber'20*of the frame 1.8 with which it is associated. The other end 33 of each spring 31 extends into an opening 34 in the backisupporting cover member'll. It will be evident that if the parts are; folded in the position. "shown in Fig. 2 with the frame members 18.-
and cross bar 23 nested in the recess 15 the same will be confined between the, cover member- 11 and the seat portion 10, and the device-forming-thesubject matter of this invention will have theappearance of the-ordinary toilet lid'or cover, for which it is'substituted. However, in order to bring the-lower, portions of the framesto such a position that the same can be engaged with the clips 26 without making these clips extend too high above the top of'theseat'portion 10, the offsets 21 are provided", and in order to accommodate-these offsets and permit the back supporting portion 11 to assume a vertical position, when the said means beingshown as being parts are in unfolded, operative position the recesses 35 are provided in the shoulder 14. It will be furthermore noted that when the device is unfolded the springs 31 will tend to move the frames 18 and the cross bar 23 to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 1 thus moving the same out of the way of the child when being placed in position on the device. After the frames 18 are engaged with the clips 26 and the hook 25 is engaged with the offset 22, the springs tend to hold the hook in engagement with the said offset.
If desired, the pivoted catch 36 having the opening 37 engaging the projection 38 may be provided for holding the seat portion 10' and cover member 11 together when the de vice is folded up. The seat portion 10 is provided with an opening39 therein and means is provided for adjusting the size of said opening' by reducing the same, said means comprisingan annular insert member 40 having,
a central opening 41. The edge of the opening 39 is bevelled as indicated at 42 and the outer edge of the insert 40 is oppositely bevelled. Clips 43 are provided for holding the insert member 40 inposition in the opening 39.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by United States Letters Patent is:
