. IMPROVEMENT IN ALBUMS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 199,982, dated February 5, 1878; application filed October 1, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN G. KOCH, J r., of Berlin, in the Kingdom of Prussia, have invented an Improvement in Albums for Photographs, of which the following is a specification:

The album is sustained upon an easel. The back of the album is downward. There are pictures in the front cover. When the front cover is swung down the folding leaves within can be opened out to examine the pictures. There is a sliding frame within the album, carrying one or two ranges of pictures, and held down by a spring catch. When the catch is liberated, the pictures ;are projected at the upper edge of the album by a spring.

In the drawing, Figure 1 shows the album as folded. Fig. 2 is the same as entirely open. Fig. 3 is an elevation, showing the mechanism for projecting the pictures at the top; and Fig. 4 is a vertical section.

The easel is made of the legs a a, to the front ones of which the album is attached.

. The front cover 0 of the album is provided pictures to be inserted from the top edge.

At the inner surface of the cover there is a .leaf, d, with two or more photograph-spaces with the surrounding mats of ordinary character.

An album-sheet, (1 adapted to receive pictures at both sides, is attached to the cover 0 at the front edge 3, and similar half-sheets to holdphotographs, as at d (P, are connected to the edges 4 of the cover.. These fold together upon the inner surface of the cover when the same is to be shut up. A swinging leg, 6, sustains the front edge of the albumcover when in an inclined position.

The album is made as a box in the shape of a book. Thereis a stationary leaf, f, with picture-holders and swinging half-leaves f f, hinged at 5 to the edges of j, which pictureholders are all similar to those made use of in ordinary photograph-albums. These holders f f d d fold inwardly when the albumis to be closed, and the sheet (1 folds back.

Within the album-box there is a frame, m, that can be slid up and down. It is guided by projections entering the grooves 70 70'. There is a spring to project the pictures that are hinged to m, said spring being preferably of india-rubber, attached at its bottom end to the back at 9, passing up over a roller, 0, and descending to the frame m. The latch s is provided with a spring, a, and a button end, t, and the catch upon the frame m receives the hooked end of the latch s, to hold the frame m in place when the frame is pushed down from the position shown in Fig. 3 to that shown in Fig. 1. WVhen the latch s is liberated, by pushing upon the button end it the spring it draws up the frame 122, and with it the pictures g g g g 9 The pictureholders g g g are firmly fixed to the frame m but the pictures g 9 swing outwardly to uncover the pictures g. This is accomplished by the lower ends of g g being cut off diagonally and drawn down by an india-rubber band. This construction allows of the pictures 9 g being swung inwardly as the frame m and its pictures are pushed down into the box of the photograph-album.

The photograph-holders are all made similarly to those in photograph-albums, with openings in the sheets or at the edges for the pictures to be inserted.

The leaf with the pictures f is preferably attached at the top to allow it to be swung out into the position shown in Fig. 4, for the insertion or withdrawal of the pictures.
