Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OHARLES FEBDINAND GEYER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO KOCH SONS 85 CO., OF SAME PLACE.
ALBUM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. .500,32'7, dated June 27, 1893.
Application filed February 21, 1893. Serial No.463.21'7. (No model.)
To all whom it may conoern:
Be it know that I, CHARLES FERDINAND GEYER, of New York city, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Albums, of which the following is a description, reference being taken to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to portraittalbums, or album holders and to other devices of similar character for books of illustrations, maps, and the like, which when closed serve as ornamental holders for the portraits orillustrations and When open form readily adjusted supports presenting the books or other articles to be exhibited in a convenient and advantageous position.
To these ends my invention consists of the device and of its several parts, constructed, arranged, combined, and used, substantially in the manner hereinafter described, illustrated, and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of an album and holder complete. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Figs. 3 and 4: are vertical sections on line 3-3 of Fig. 1,
. showing the device as closed and as opened.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view of a modification, and Fig. 6 is a detail view.
In the drawings like letters of reference indicate like parts.
In Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive the details of the preferred embodiment of my invention as applied to portrait albums are clearly shown.
To the base or stand B is hinged as shown the front C. In its closed position the front C forms the cover of the album, confining the leaves G between it and the rear cover or back D, to which it may be Secured by a catch H. The back D" forms the carrier for the book or series of leaves G and for this purpose is provided wi th the cleat or small shelf (Z upon which the book is supported. The front C is provided with a similar cleat or foot portion c to the free edges of which the back D is hinged as shown. A link F pivvoted to the back and to the base supports the upper end of the back and permits the tilting motion hereinafter described. The front or cover O is hinged at its knee or angle to the base B and may be turned forward and downward to expose the contents of the album as seen in Fig. 4. By this movement the back D is tilted backward, elevated, and brought forward as in the figure. The leaves 5 5 may then be convenientlyturned over one by one falling forward onto the inclined front O in position to advantageously eXpose the pictures or other illustrations upon their rear faces. The front O is made With a glass plate c' fitting into a rectangular or other opening and forming a transparent panel through which the first page of the book, with its portrait or illustration may be seen. WVhen the holder therefore is closed and clasped it presents in front View the appearance of a picture nounted and supported in a frane and stand, as in Fig. 1.
Preferably the rear of the book o r albu is attached by the fiexible connection g, (Figs. 7o 4: and 6) to the back piece D as this prevents the album from falling forward when the holder is suddenly or carelessly opened while it does not interfere With the partial removal of the book for the purpose of drawing out or inserting other portraits.
In Figs. 5 and 6 I show a less preferred form of my invention in which the link F is replaced by a slding motion and the back D is closely mounted upon the foot cleat c of the front O instead of being hinged thereto. The back D is provided as before with the book supporting cleat d which rests directly upon the edge of the foot c Without hinge or other attachment.
To prevent slipping, when the front C is opened, I may place projecting ribs or strips upon the lower face of the cleat d and a raised edge upon the foot o, the strips serving to retain the cleat d upon the foot as the 1at- 0 ter raises or lowers the back D. The link F is replaced by the fixed support F' against which the back D rests and upon which it slides as the front C is opened or closed.
In dotted lnes I have indicated the position of the parts when the holder is open. From this it is clear that the book or album is tilted backward and brought forward as before.
I have now set forth two complete types of IOO my invention and the manner in which they may be used. I do not enumerate the many minor nodifications that may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the principles of myinvention, because so to do would tend to obscure rather than to make clear the essentials of the invention.
I now claim and desire to secure by these Letters Patent the following:
1. As an article of manufacture an album consisting of a base B, front or cover C, hinged to the said base B, a back D hinged to the said front or cover C, and provided With a book support or cleat d, a book or series of leaves G carried by the said back D, a support or link F pivoted to the said back and to the said base, the relative position of the parts being such that the front may be opened and turned down and the book or leaves thereby tilted back and brought forward, substantially as, and for the purposes, set forth.
2. As an article of manufacture an album or like exhibiting device consisting of a base B, a front or cover C, provided With a cleat or foot c, and hinged to the said base B, a back D provided with a book support or cleat (l and carried upon the said cleat or foot c, a book or series of leaves G carried by the said back D, and a rear support for the said back attached to the said base, the relative position of the parts being such that the front may be opened and turned down and the book or, leaves thereby tilted back and brought forward, substantially as, and for the purposes, set forth.
3. As an article of manufacture, an album stand or holder consisting of abase B a front or cover C hinged to the said base B, a back D hinged to the said front and a support or link F hinged to the said back D and base B, whereby a link movement is obtained enabling the back D to be sinultaneously brought forward and tilted back when the front is opened, substantially as, and for the purposes, set forth.
4. As an article of nanufacture, an album stand or holder consisting of a base, B, a front or cover, C, provided with a cleat or foot, c, and hinged to the said base, a back, D, provided with a book support or cleat and carried upon the said cleat or foot, c, and a rear support for the said back, upon which said back is novable, and an opening or transparent panel in the said front or cover, C, formed to expose and constitute a frane for the front leaf picture or other design of the album or series of leaves to be exhibited therein, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 14th day of February, 1893.
CHARLES FERDINAND GEYER.
