The edges of the door window opening are rounded-in such a manner that little or no flat space is provided against which to clamp the parts of a bracket, and neither arethe openings square or thevtop and bottom edges parallel, as they follow the car design as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1 showing at 2 the downward slant of the upper edge of the window open- Application August 31, 1931, Serial m seazsr 8 Claims. (or 29684)r in than is to meet-various conditions in all been developed; I
sizes and shapes of,c arsTthat my invention has, The glass plate 3 is tightly fitted and cementedwithin grooves of upper and lower bracket plates 4 and 5 inanyappr oved manner, and as the construction of the lower bracket is the simplest, this'will first be described. The lower bracket includes an inner clamp mentber 6 provided with a' straight clamping margin 1 directed at an'angle toward the door at its outer edge, andahousing' or hollow boss portion '7 coveringfover' the clamping screw 8, as well. as the screw'engaged lu'g or boss9 of the opposed meme. be'rlO'of the clamp, whichfits overand against 5 the-rounding edge of the window opening, "a piece of sheet rubber 11 beingv interposed to insure a tight grip, and it will be noted that this rubber extends to the right and is pierced by screw 8 so that when the clamp is disassembled the rubber 20, sheet Willnotbecome misplace l Outer clamp plate is bent outward at 10' at right angles to' the door and vertically pivoted by means of a bo1tl2 passing through'tl e-memhere, as well as through ao friction plate 13, and if desired, a pair' of thin washers asihdicated slings. 1 The housing portion? of the inner clamp'n emher is closed. on its outer end, as best shown at 7' in Figg 9jwhere this member is upside down insofar as a description of the lower bracket is concerned. "Theclamping screw -B'is accessible I only from within the automobile so as to makeit easy to adjust from Within, yet hard to steal fromwithout In the action of this device it will benoted that the inner clamping plate is initially slanted to'bring itsrfree edgeinto contact'f'with thefdoor as shown, and as the screw is tightened this plate 6 will tend to straightemand outerclamplq will 40 attemptto crawl upward on the curved'edge of the door, However, the glass plate '3 prevents this movement with a result that an extraordinary tight grip is secured onthe door edge."
, The[upper bracket'hasthe counterpart of plate 4 V 5 in plate 4,which is likewise'securedto theglass," b t hic s ea of e n p ot d e ma bolt to the clamp member'sas islower bracket plate 5, is iinstead formed with a, hollow sheet metal 7 lea-1114' formed integrally on plate 5, ball is gripped by upper and lower hemispherical sockets 15 andlfi respectively, formed on plates Hand 18. V Plate 18 is formed with a step 18 in it receiving a bent down portion 17, of plate 17 and the two plates are frictionally clamped 55;;
ATE T OFFICE and which e on the upper clamp.
In clamping reflect just like the lower one described, except that the presence of the ball joint 14 between the plate 4 and the clamping elements 6 and 18 permit these elements to tip with respect to; the horizontal or upper edge of the glass as shown in Fig. 1 so that apparatus will accommodate itself to any down- Ward slant of the window opening-dueto the design of the car body, a feature not properly cared for in prior devices of this kind insofar as I am edge. When odd shaped plates 1'7 are supplied.
aware. Through the provision of. screws '19,,
plate l7.may easily be detached and another one of slightly difierent form substituted so that the precise form to suit the particular car may be supplied. Thus the'plate l7 of Fig. is tapered smaller at 17. whereas in Fig. 8 the corresponding clamping portion is shown the same size at both endsas would be used to fit a window opening in which the upper edge is parallel with the lower they are, of course, furnished right and left for opposite windows of the car. It will be noted that the vertical pivotal axes of the upper and lower brackets are aligned when the apparatus is installed, and that the, side wing may be adjustedas desired on this axis. Having thus described my improved side wing bracket, whatIclaim'is: I r 7 1. In 'an automobile side wing bracket ofthe character described, a clamp'adapted to engage the opposite edges of ,a door window opening comprising a plate with a margin arranged tobear against the inner, side of the door opening and,
formedwithahollow boss overlying the edge of V the opening, and a screw extending into the boss,
a second plate bearing curved to fit the rounded outer corner of the window opening and provided with a lug positioned within said hollowboss threadedly engaged by said screw.
2..In, an automobile side wing bracketoi the character. described, a clamp adapted to engage the opposite edges of a door window opening com prising a plate .witha margin arranged to bear against the inner side of the door opening and formed with a hollow boss overlying the edge of' the .opening, and a screw extending into the boss,
a second plate bearing curved to lit the rounded outer corner of .the window opening and provided withfa lug positioned within said hollow boss threadedly engaged .by said screw, and a sheet of friction material positioned between said secondplate and the window, also extending into said hollow boss andengaged by said screw. v
3. In a structure as specified in claim 1, said hollow -boss being closed onthe outer side and said screw accessible only from inside of the car. r v
l. 4. Ina side wing bracket for automobile door windows, avclamp for the edge of the window opening comprising inner and, Outer edge clampthe upper clamp operates 'edly engaged by said'screw, and adapted to engage said side wing formed ing plates, the outer plate formed with a con vexed outer wall, the inner plate formed with a hollow boss portion riding on the convexed portion of the outer plate, the outer plate formed with an extension lying within said hollow boss,
and a screw extending into the hollow boss engaging said extension for drawing the plates together.
5. An automobile side wing bracket including a clamp adapted to engage the opposite edges of a door window opening comprising a plate with a margin arranged to bear against the inner side of opening formed with a. hollow boss overlying the edge of the opening, a screw extending into the'boss, a second plate formed to fit the outer margin of the window opening and provided with a lug positioned within said hollow boss threada member arranged with a, ball and said second plate provided with a socket formed to engage'said ball for providing a ball and socket connection between the side wingand clamp;
fipIn an automobile side wing'bracket of the character described, a clamp adapted to engage the opposite edges of a door window opening comprising a plate with a margin arranged to bear against the inner side of the door opening and formed with a hollow boss overlying the edge of the opening, a screw extending into the boss, a secondplate arranged and adapted to engage the outersurface of the door adjacent ,the window opening, said second plate being provided with an extension extending'vertically into said hollow boss threadedlyengaged by said screw, and a strip of resilient material adapted to be interposed between said second plate and the side of the door. I
'7. An automobile side wing bracket comprising a clamping memberarranged and adapted for clampingfto the horizontally extending edge of an automobile window opening and provided with an outwardly projecting portion, a horizontally extending vertically opening channel member provided withan inwardly projecting portion overlapping said outwardly projecting portion,
and a ball and socket joint connecting said overlapping portions positioned adjacent the edge of thewindow at a point between the plane of the glass wing and the window edge.
8. An automobile side wing bracket comprising a clamping member arranged and adapted for clampingto the horizontally extending edge of an automobile window opening and provided with an outwardly projecting portion formed with an ofiset, a horizontally extending vertically opening channel member adapted to receive within it the horizontal edge of a' substantially. vertical glass side wing and provided with an inwardly projecting portion overlapping said outwardly projecting offset portion, and a ball and socket joint connecting said overlapping portions positioned, adjacent the edge of the window at a point between the plane of the glass wing and the window edge.
