Feb. 26, 1935. E. B. HINSHAW DEVICE FOR HOLDING X-RAY FILM IN PATIENTS MOUTH Filed July 5, 1934 ATTORNEY Patented Feb. 26, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DEVICE FOR HOLDING X-RAY FILM IN PATIENTS MOUTH 1 Claim.
This invention relates to a holder for X-ray films employed for dental purposes, and has for the primary object the provision of a device of the above stated character which will provide an efiicient and economical medium for supporting a film of a conventional character in the mouth of a patient to permit the making of an interproximal examination of the teeth or the taking of an X-ray picture of the portions of teeth exposed above the gums of a person for determining whether there is any abnormal condition not apparent from a superficial examination.
With these and other objects in view this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan view illustrating one face of the holder.
Figure 2 is a similar viewillustrating the opposite face of the holder.
Figure 3 is a side elevation illustrating the holder.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 3.
Figure 6 is a plan view illustrating the blank from which the holder is constructed. 7
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a blank constructed of paper or any other material suitable for the purpose and consists of a body portion 2 of substantially rectangular shape and of a size slightly larger than the size of an X-ray film. Integral with opposite edges of the body 2 are pairs of flaps 3 and 4. The flaps 4 are of slightly less width than the width of the body and each are provided with an elongated slot 5. The flaps 3 have tongues 6 integral therewith and the flaps 3 are adapted to be folded over the film resting upon 5 the body with the tongues 6 paralleling and extending at right angles to said flaps 3. The flaps 4 are thenfolded upon the fiaps 3 and overlap each other with the tongues extending through the slots. The flaps thus folded'cooperate with, 10 the body 2 in covering the film with the tongues 6 extending at right angles thereto, as shown in Figures 3 and 5. The blank 1 folded upon the film in a manner heretofore described provides an efiicient and economical holder for the 15' film whereby the latter may be positioned in the mouth of a person with the tongues 6 project- 'ing outwardly between the teeth so that the person may grip the tongues by said teeth and thereby retain the film in proper position for 20 making an X-ray picture or examination of the exposed portions of teeth above the gums.
A holder of this character can be economically made and after once used may be destroyed and further before use may be suitably sterilized 5 so that danger of infection will be eliminated. Having described the invention, I claim: A holder comprising a body adapted to have a film positioned thereon, a pair of flaps integral with opposite edges of the body, tongues 30 formed on said flaps and foldable relative thereto, a second pair of flaps integral with opposite edges of the body and having elongated slots, said first-named pair of flaps adapted to be folded over the film on the body with the tongues 5 extending at right angles thereto; said secondnamed pair of flaps adapted to be folded over the first-named pair of flaps with the tongues projecting through the slots.
