DENTAL i-RAY PACKAGE.
Application sie@ october 7. 192e serialA No. 140,133.
vThis invention relates to dental X-ray iilin packets and particularly to such pac'kets having a tab adapted to be gripped between the teeth of the patient to position the packet during exposure; i proved embodiment of the invention disclosed in' the patent to Raper, 1,467 ,87 6 granted September 1l, 1923.
y Such packets heretofore have either had the t-ab near the middle, to be used in taking inter-proximal exposures, or near one edge` to'b'e used in taking root exposures. One obj ect of my .invention is to furnisha package in which a single tab may be usedvfor .f either purpose. Another object is to utilize they tab as a means for opening thepackage. Other objects will appear from the following description, referencebeing made to the accompanying drawing, wherein the 'same reference Characters denote" the saine parts throughout; andin which Fig. 1 is aperspective view of a package embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 isa side view of a package showing certain parts in section;

The Ypackagein whichv my invention is shownA as incorporated in Fig. lis of the type disclosed inv Patent'No. 1,441,160, Lovejoy granted January 2, 1923, ,and the wrapping of which consists ofra sheet of material 1, preferably paper, coveringone side ofthe package and bent around 'the edges at 2, and held in'place by an adhesive coated sheet or label 3. Beneath one edge of the label 3 is inserted the end 4 of a tab 5 which is bent around the edge of the package and across the opposite surface 1 against which it lies fiat, as manufactured and sold. The tab is preferably scored or weakened along transverse lines 6 and 7, one of which ls near the edge of the package while the other the median line of the package. Suitable directions may be printed on the tab, as at 8.
another embodiment This invention is an .imy 'easily vWritten or printed on.
is along The tab may consist, as shown in Fig. 2, of a'singleA piece of rather stifpaper' 0r of cardboard 9', or it lmay consist, as shown in Fig.v E3, of a'sheet of metal foil'9 preferably aluminum', uponA each surface of which is cemented a sheetof paper 10, makingr a'laIn-. inated tab, having the advantages, inherent in a metal foil, of being readily. impression# able and the advantagesA of paper of being The tab may have a small amount `of adhesive onV the under side as at 20, so that when used for int-'erproxiinal exposuresit will be madeto adhere to thepackage. This may .be Waterproof adhesive byr which the tab adheres lightly tothe package but which permits it to be-stripped'thereirom at the end, when used :is shown in dottedflines in Fig. l, or it may be a soluble adhesive that is inoistened only when used. '.Oniy alight degree ofadhesive isnecessary in any event.
The tabmay be bent up 'valori the line 6, asindicated in dottedlines in Iig. 1, when an 'exposure' is tol bev made of certainl entire teeth, including the roots of one jaw. The user then bites orv grips the tab between his teeth vand ,holds the tab in such position that it will lie lalmost entirelybehind one aw-,and lwill' extendibehind the roots. f the 'tab is bent aloi'ig-line 7, it will extend up frein the center ofthepackage,'as shown inFigfQ, -and when ,gripped Vbetween theteeth will Vlie behindfthe crowns of the teeth'ofjboth AlyingHarige'.12 and heldin place by ,a sheet 13. O'verlying` this sheet 13" is a y'tab 14."The 1m( sheet 18 overlies the flange 12 except for the part covered by tab 14. At each edge 15 of tabl14,V the fiange 12 has small slits, andV at these points the sheet 13 passes beneath the tab and the flange, the latter being bent 10e down over the tab. An additional sealing strip of paper 16 may be placed across-this end of the packet, the edge 17 of which constitutes an abutment against which the tab may be bent up for the purpose of taking im Cil root exposures.V In Fig. 5 are shown the usual sheets of sensitized ilm 18 and protective paper 19. The tab 14 is continued around theedge of thepackage, as shown at 15, under sheet 11, and may be used to rip off this sheet 11, thus opening the package.
The packet shown in Fig. Gis similar to that just described except that the sealing strip 16 is omitted.
In' Fig. 7 is shown a package ofthe type including a sheet of paper 19 across one surface, upon which is bent as a iiange 2l, the edge of a sealing' sheet of material 22 covering the other surface and bent around theledge. This may be of metal foil or of iaper, and is held in place either by adesive or by the crimping of the material. From one edge, an integral tab 23 is continued which constitutes an opening tab and also is to be gripped by the teeth of the user as already described. l
The form shown in Fig. 8 is similar to that shown in Fig. 2 except thatthe tab 24 is integral with the sealing sheet or label 25.
In all of the forms described it is to be noted'that the tab is so joined to a part of the wrapper that it can be used to open the package, and that the tab is in each case attached to the package adjacent one edge, and is' adapted to be bent attwo diiierent points as desired for use during the exposure. The material of the tab is impressionable ,in that it may be bent at the desired points of fiexure without cracking and will retain the shape into which it is bent.
It is obvious that numerous other embodiments are possible and I contemplate as within my invention all such modifications and equivalents as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
VHaving thus described by invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by lLetters Patent is,
1. A dental X-ray film package having an impressionable tab attached thereto adjacent one edge andvhaving a free portion exterior of the package lying flat upon the package and extending over half way across the package, and being bendable on aline near the edge of the package and also on a line bisecting the package transverselyof the tab.
2. A dental X-ray film package having attached thereto adjacent one edge a tab the length of which is greaterthan one half the ybaseand also on a line midway of the pack.-
age whereby the. tab may he readily bent at either place.v
3. A dental X-ray film package having a sealing sheet, a iiexible tab joined to said sealing sheet adjacent one edge of the package and constituting a tab whereby the package may be opened, said tab extending over halfway across one face of the package from said edge. Y
li. A dental X-ray film package having a sealing sheet, an impressionable tab joined to said sealing sheet adjacent one edge of the package and constituting a tab by which the package may be opened, said tab having a free portion exterior (of the package extending over half way across said package from said edge and being readily bendable on a line near the edge of the package andV also on a line bisecting` the package transversely of the tab.
5. A dental X-ray film package having a sealing sheet, an impressionable tab joined te said sealing sheet adj acentV one edge of the package and constituting a tab by which the package may be opened, said tab Vextending over halfway across said package'from said edge and having weakened transverse lines near its base and at an intermediate point in its length, whereby it may be readily bent near the edge of the package and on a lineV midway of the package.
6. A dental X-ray nlm package having on one surface a sealing sheet, a tab extending from said sheet near the edge ofthe package and attached to the package by the sheet and constituting a means by which the sheet may be torn from the package and the package thereby opened, the tab having a length greater than one half the distance across the package and comprising a sheet of impressionable `metal foil and a strip of paper laminated together, and having` transverse scored lines adjacent its base, whereby it may be readily Ybent near the edge of the package, and also atan 4intermediate point,
whereby it may be readily bent onl a line' midway of the package.
