13 Claims. (01.216-9) This invention relates to an apparatus for banding boxes or the like; and has special reference to the provision of r a banding apparatus of the type in which a flap of thestrip to be used as banding material or both of its flaps are folded primarily against one side of the box and subsequently against an adjacent'box side.
In devices heretofore known in the art the medial portion of the strip is held with pressure against one side of the box being at rest and the edge or flap of the strip is folded down'against an adjacent side ofthe'box by a folding member which moves along said side pastthe edge 'oflthe 5 strip. 1 Thereupon another folding member is tion is'performed rapidly, the flap will be flung outwards when being released from theprimary folding member andthe secondary folding memoperation is uncompleted. Even though the primary folding member should-not be moved past the edge of the flap but is given a movement on a line at right angle to the line of the primary movement immediately upon reaching an edge of the box'the strip will notbe effectively secured to the box on account of its tendencyto.
be flung out from the side'of the box against which it is primarily folded and on subsequently paratus for banding boxes or the like, such ap-,
paratus not being subject to the inconveniences above mentioned.
' A main object of my invention is to provide an apparatus for banding boxes or the'like in I which the strip is folded against a side of the box by a folding member which is moved past anedge of the box but not pastthe edge of the strip and subsequently moved over said edge to apply the flap to an adjacent box side whilst the strip is held tightly pressed against the box side previously mentioned.
Another object of my invention is to provide an apparatus of this type in which a smoothing or pressing member is conveyed behind the folding member during the primary movement of the latter and is held during the secondary folding operation with pressure against the 'side of the box against which the strip is primarily folded; R
A further object of my invention is to provide moved to turn the flap up againstithe bottom side of] the box. If however the banding operabar will not engage said flap and thus the banding an apparatus of. the same typein which a pressing-v member is moved'l'again'st the. side of the box against which the strip is primarily folded and held with pressure against said side during the second stage'of the folding operation.
To. the accomplishment of the foregoing and .5 such other objects asv may hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the elements and their .rela'- tion one to the other defined in the claims, refer-' ence being hadto the accompanying drawings which show preferred embodiments of my inven- 10;
tion and in which:
Figures 1 and 2 are front elevational-views of the apparatus shownv in two different stages of operation. t I
-Figure' 3 is a side elevational view of the same. 15 Figures 4-6 are. views showing the banding op-.- eration in successive stages. I
Figure '7 is a side elevational viewof part of a modified form of theapparatus. v
Referring to the drawings the box 1 to be banded is positioned between tworoller shaped folding members 2 rotatably journalled on links 3. The links'are pivoted to pins 4 on the free ends of arms 8 and actuated each by a coiled tension spring 5. The links are provided with adjusting screws 6 which are forced bythe spring against shoulders 7 on the arms-8, thus limiting the upward stroke of the rollers 2. Each arm 8 is pivoted to a crank arm 10 on'a pin 9, said crank arm beingrigidly connected with another arm 11, arms '10 and 11 thus'forming a bell crank lever keyed to'a shaft 12. Q
' -A roller shaped pressing member 13 is arranged adjacent each folding member, said rollers 13 being journalled on pins 14 on 'the free end of arms 3 15 which are pivoted-on the pins 9. a
The arms 8 are provided with shoulders '16 en-. gaged by rollers 17, rotatably journalled on a free end on one arm 18 of a bell crank lever rotatably journallediona shaft 19. The other arm 20 ofthe, bell crank lever is likewise providedwith a rotate able roller21 engaging the periphery of a cam disc 22 under the influence of a coiled tension spring 23 connected tothe. two arms 8. The two cam discs-22' are keyed' to a main drive shaft 24.. Continuous rotary movement is imparted to said shaft in any well known manner and therefore no description of the driving means is needed herein. f I o The arms/ 11 carry rotatable rollers 25 riding on the periphery of cam'discs 26 likewise keyed to shaft 24,"and are connected by means of a coiled tension spring 29.. 1 r
The position of the arms 8 relative to that of the arms -15before beginning the folding opera tion is determined by coiled tension springs 27 tending to move said arms together, thereby causing adjusting screws 28 in the arms 15 to engage the rear side of the arms 8.
For holding the medial portion of the strip 31 to be folded under pressure against the upper side of the box a stamp 30 of known structure is used. The means for actuating said stamp is likewise known in the art and therefore description thereof is omitted herein.
The modified form of the apparatus is intended for folding but one flap of the strip against two adjacent sides of the box. The roller 13 is omitted and replaced by a'stamp 36 on a rod 37. Reciprocating movements are imparted to said rod by a grooved disc 38 keyed to a continuously rotating shaft 39 driven in any well known manner. A pin 40 on the rod engages the groove 41. r
In the operation of the embodiment of apparatus shown invFigures I and 2 the box 1 is conveyed' in anyiwelllmown manner into a position beneath the. folding members and a strip 31 of paper or similar thin material is applied to the box likewise inany well known manner for instance by means of a1 pincher 32, so that its portion rests on the upper side of the box as illus rated in Fig. 4'. Thereupon the strip is pressed against the box by the stamp 30. At this period the different elements of the banding apparatus occupy the position illustrated in Fig.1. The arms Sand 15 are then caused to move downwards maintaining the relative position illustrated in Figs. 1 and 4 under the influence of the rotating cam discs 26 permitting thejarms. 11 to swing somewhat together under the influence of spring 29, and the rollers 2 fold the flap of the strip downagainst the vertical sides 33 of the box, until the rollers 2v and 13 occupy about the position illustrated in Fig. 5. On the rapid move-.
ment of the rollers the flap of the strip has a tendency to be flung'outwards as shown in Fig. 5 but is prevented therefrom by the roller 2, which does not release the flap...v The cam discs are timed in such relation that immediately upon the roller 2 having passed the edge 34 of the box, the descending movement is arrested and the arms 20 each enter a curvature on a disc 22, thereby swinging the arms 18 together. Then the arms ,8 are free to swing together, so that the rollers 2 fold the flaps of the'strip up against the lower side 35 of the box tightly and adhesively applying them to said side, as illustrated in Figures 2 and 6. The presser rollers are conveyed on the vertical sides 33 of the box behind the rollers, and hold the strip against said sides with yielding pressure when the second stage of the folding operation, viz. the applying of the flap ends of the strip to the lower side 35 of the box is performed, thus preventing any injurious effect caused by the tendency of the strip to be flung outwardly and. not to adhere to the side of the box. As the links 3 are. free to yield somewhat downwards, the rollers 2 accommodate themselves automatically to press against the side 35 of the box, even though the vertical position of the side 35 is somewhat varied.
In operating the modified apparatus shown in Figure 7 the stamp 36 is held in a retired position during the descending movement of the roller 2 until it has reached the edge 34 of the box. Then the stamp 36 is moved against, the side .33 and holds the strip with pressure against said side during the second stage of the folding operation.
After finishing said operation the stamp is retired again.
Although but two specific embodiments of this invention have been herein shown and described, it will be understood that numerous details of the construction shown may be altered or omitted without departingfrom the spirit of this invention as defined by the following claims.
