Application filed February This invention relates to box covering machines and my improvement 1s directed to means for covering a card board box previously bent to shape and size to form a skeleton, and preferably .secured at the corners by adhesive strips.
My invention has been devised for the purpose of providing` automatic means, actuate by any suitable source of power, of extremely Vsimple and inexpensive construction to accomplish the same results as the comparatively complicated and expensive machines for this purpose now in general use.
Briefly expressed, my invention consists of automatic means for folding a pre-pasted cover onto a box skeleton, stripping the covered box from its carrier and conveying the same from the machine. y
An importa-nt feature of the invention resides in the employment of a cam acting to control the movements of the form block on which the box skeleton is carried, said form block being normally held in suspension in its uppermost position through a supporting rod and a roller resting on thetop of the cam, in vertical alignment with its shaft, and this construction obviates any possibility of accident to the operator as the downward travel of the form block is controlled by gravitation, and is not a positive movement, so that, should the operators hand be below the form block as it is about to enter between the upper folders, no harm would be done, as the form clock and its rod have no appreciable weight and can be lift-ed by the hand at will.
Another feature of the invention resides in automatic mechanism, whereby the devices employed to apply the cover to the box as it descends, are caused tov recede or move outwardly as the form-block moves upwardly after delivering` a covered box to the conveyor, so that said form-block does not contact with said cover applying devices thus keeping said devices clean and free of paste.
For the accomplishment of thesev and such other objects as will'be lapparent to those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains, the invention consists of thev following construction, combination and arrangementof parts hereinafter specifically set forth and illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof, wherein is shown an illustrative embodiment of the invention, but it will be understood that such changes, variations and modifications may be resorted e, 1926. serial No. 86,374.

Referring now to the drawings, l preferably construct a frame 10, comprising a table 11, supported on legs 12, and rising from the table is a two-piece frame 13, consist-ing of a lower part having side portions 14, and a cross bar 15, on which at 16, the upper part 17, of the frame is bolted or otherwise secured, and this upper part consists of side portions 18, bent inwardly at the top as at 19, and bolted at 20, between the out turned portion 21, of the parallel bars 22 and 23, and a cross head 24, formed with three guide bosses 25 and 26, arranged ina straight row. The bars 22 and 23 are turned outwardly at the lower ends and are bolted to the cross portion 15, as at and constitute part of the upper frame 17.
rlhe middle guide boss is adapted to receive avertically reciprocating rod or bar 27, which carries a roller 28, passes through and iS guided by the cross portion 15, of the lower guide frame as at 29, and carries au exchangeable form block or box receiving head at its lower end.
Side guide and brace rods 31 are provided to steady the form block carrying middle rod 27 in its operative up and down travel, Said rods being connected at the 'tcp by a cross plate 32, and are also guided in a bracket 33 formed on the vertical bar 22.
A vertically arranged plate cam 84, on which the roller 28 rests, is carried on a shaft 35 journalled in bearings 36 and 37 in the upper frame, and on said shaft are keyed a bevelv gear 38, a balancing "ywheel 39 and a sprocket 40, geared by a chain 41, to a sim ilar sprocket 42, carried on a shaft 43, having keyed thereto a large sprocket or gearv 44, to which a suitable source of power may be connected.

The upper frame 17, is securely held by brace rods 46, connected at 47, to cross extensions 48, of said frame, and are threaded at their lower ends to receive nuts 49, clamped to the top and bottom sides of the table 11, through which the bra-ce rods pass.
The upper frame carries an arcuate 50, to protect the opera-tor when the machine' is running. (Portions of guard have been removed.)
An endless conveyor belt 51, is arranged to travel across the table and is carried on rolls 52, journalled in brackets 53, secured to the underside of the table 11, at the front and rear edges thereof. The roller 52, at the rear of the table is mounted on an extended shaft 54, which carries grooved pulleys 55, belted as at 56, to similar pulleys 57, said pulleys being of various sizes whereby speed adjustment may be attained.
The pulleys 57 are keyed to a horizontally arranged shaft 58, journalled in brackets 59, and carrying bevel gear connections 60 to receive power from a cam shaft 61, and to drive a cam shaft 62. (See Fig.
The cam shaft 61, is driven through a bevel gear connection 63, by a vertically arranged shaft 64, geared as at 65, to the bevel gear 38, on shaft 35, in the upper guide frame 17.
The upper folding device, the one making the first or side fold is constituted by a pair of parallel rolls 66, yieldingly mounted and journalled in blocks 67, having` Shanks 68,
entering guide tubes 69, and backed by springs 70, encircling reduced rods 71,' extending backwardly from the shanks and slidable in bores 72, formed in frames 73.
The tuckers 74, comprise angularly `bent plates 75 having a slotted base portion 76, by which they areserewed or bolted to the 73a of the frames 7 3. (See Fig. 2.)

Attached to the frames 73, are depending spring arms 97 forked at their lower ends as at 98 to straddle a cross rod 99, (see Fig. 5) carried adjustably in the outer ends of slide or cam, bars 100, having cam faces 101, adapted to engage the cam faces 96 of Vthe bars 95 to draw back the rolls 88 when the form block 30 starts upwardly after delivering a covered boX to the conveyor 51, to vprevent said rolls contacting with said yform block and this operation is accomplished by a pair of cams 102 on shaft 62, timed to strike the spring arms 97 at the proper time to force the slide bars 100, inwardly through guides 103 on the said frames 91a.
As the form block continues its upward travel, the upper folding rolls 66 are caused to recede from contact with said block through the instrumentality of pivoted levers 10a, perforated the tops to receive the bolt extensions 71 of the shanks 68 and having angular extensions or plates 105, against which properly timed cams 106 are adapted to impinge, said cams being carried on the extended ends of the shaft 61 and outside of the frames 73.
Spaced parallel spring metal stripper plates 107 are provided with slotted adjustable rests 108 to attach them to the frame table.
The frames 73 and 91a are also provided witl slotted base extensions 109, by which they may be adjustably secured to said table, said. extensions being preferably provided with beveled sides 110, to engage undercut ribs 111 on the frame table 11.
T he parts of the machine where necessary are, or should be adjustable to accommodate boxes of various sizes.
Referring to Fi 8 to 14 of the drawings,
the box blank is shown at 112; the formed bex l skelet-on at 113, and the box cover at 1141, which in the operation of covering the box skeleton is folded on the dotted lines, the separate operations being illustrated in Figs. 11 to 14 inclusive.
The operator of the machine first places a prepasted cover in the proper position on the box skeleton and then places the box and its cover on tl form block after which the descent of the form block between the folders and tuckers complete the folding operation.
lt will be seen that the form yblock and its supporting rod are normally suspended from the pear shaped cam 341, and when said cam passes from its supporting position, the form block and its rod are permitted to drop by gravitation and this movement can properly be termed floating7 and I may employ such a term in the appended claims.

1. A box wrapping machine comprising a box bla-nk and cover carrier, folders, tuckers, strippers and a conveyor, means for controlling said carrier to permit an unretarded drop to make one fold, a dwell during which the tuckers operate. an unretarded second drop to make the end fold and to impart a positive upward movement after the box is delivered to the conveyor. and means for retracting certain of the folders, said retracting means comprising a frame, retracting cams thereon, a leaf spring normally moving said retract-ing means out of actuating position, and
a cam bearing on said spring to deflectsame to actuate said retracting means.
2. A box wrapping machine comprising a box blank and cover carrier, folders, tuckers, strippers and a conveyor, means for controlling said carrier to permit an unretarded drop to make one fold, a dwell during which the tuckers operate, an unretarded second drop to make the end fold and to impart a positive upward movement after the box is delivered to the conveyor; and means for causing the folders to recede when the upward movement of the carrier occurs, a lea-f spring to normally move said last mentioned means out of operative position, and a cam to deflect said leaf spring to move said last mentioned means into operative position.
3. A box wrapping machine comprising a box blank and cover carrier, folders, truckers, strippers, and a conveyor, means for controlling said carrier to permit an unretarded drop to make one fold, a dwell during which the tuckers operate, an nnretarded second dro-p to make the end fold and to impart a posit-ive upward movement after the box is delivered to the conveyor, and means for causing the folders to recede when the upward movement of the carrier occurs, said means comprising cam operated levers, spring forked arms operated thereby, and cam faced slide bars, actuated by said arms, said slide bars being operative to cause the folders to recede.
4. A box wrapping` machine comprising a box blank and cover carrier, folders, tuckers, strippers and a conveyor, means for controlling said carrier to permit an unretarded drop to make one fold, a dwell during which the tuckers operate, an unretarded second drop to make the end fold and to impart a positive upward movement after the box is delivered to the conveyor, and means for causing the folders to recede when the upward movement of the carrier occurs, said means comprising constantly driven shafts having revolving cams to engage spring arms and pivoted levers, said arms having forks at their lower ends to operate. sliding cam carrying bars and said levers having angular plates with which some of the revolving cams engage.
