Be it known that we, EMIL SALTzxoRN and LUDWIG NICOLAI, subjects of the King of is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of our invention is to provide a machine or apparatus to be employed in the manufacture of paperboxes, as more fully set forth hereinafter, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation partially in section on the line 1 1, Fig. 2, of a machine constructed in accordance with ourinven tion. Fig 2 is a transverse section of the'same on the line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation on the line 4 4, Fig. 5, of the strip-cutting device. Fig. 5 is a sectional elevation of the same on the lne 5, Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a detached perspective View of the guide-box into which the formed boxes are forced. Fig. 7 is a perspective View of a detail of construction, and Figs. 8 and 9 show the Vapplication of a scored or grooved blank to a former.
The various working parts of the machine are supported upon a suitable vframework ct b c, the upper portion c of which is provided with suitable bearings for the reception of a shaft d, connected at its upper end by a swiveled shackle d to a chain g passing over a guidingroller F, and having its opposite end secured to and adapted to be Wound upon a Winding-drum fo. Near its lower end the shaft d is provided with a handle h, and at its lower end is secured a frame'or former i, the latter being secured to the shaft d'and capable of being readily removed for the substitution of a former or frame of different size, ac-
cording to the size or contour of the' boxes to be manufactured.
The boxes which are 'to be manufactured are made from blanks previously cut and shaped to the desired size, and the machine is designed to hold the blank when bent up into the form of a box by means of a strip of pasted paper either on the inside or upon the outside of the box, and when it is desired to employ an inner lining-piecefor holding the sides and ends of the box in position paper is fed to the former with its pasted side outward, .and While its end is held in position against the former the latter is turned by means of the operating-Wheel h, so that the band or strip entirely envelops it. After thus covering the former with the strip, that sectionV of the latter to be employed is severed from the remainder by means of a separate cutting device K, and the blank a' is placed in the position shown in Fig. 8, and its sides and end portions are turned up so as to come into contact With the pasted strip in the manner shown in Fig. 9. So far as this operation is concerned the box is practically complete, and it only remains to be delivered from the former and dried or it may be desired to cover the outside with a strip of similar material. In such case, or where it is desired to employ simply an outer covering for the blank, the former employed may be an ordinary block. In the operation of the machine when arranged for this purpose the previously-prepared blank is first held to the bottom of the former, as in Fig. 8. One of the sides of the cardboard is turned up against the former and the strip is pasted against it'. Thelower portionctof the supporting-frame serves to support a series of vertically-arranged angular strips r, which, when placed in position, form a vertical guide-box of a shape corresponding to that of the box being manufactured, as shown more clearly in Fig. G. llhe various strips fr' are held together by transverse guiding-bolts r extending through lugs r2 on the various strips, and between the heads of the bolts and the lugs o2 are coiled springs r3 normally7 tending to force the strips toward each other and press the pieces of cardboard upon the strip of pasted paper, the tension of the spring being adjusted by screws r4. The central portion of each of the sides of the box or guide is open to permit the free circulation of air to assistin drying the paste, and at their upper edges are spring-held fingers s having upper beveled edges, which, as the former Q is depressed, are forced outwardly by the lower edge of the former, and after the upper edges of the box have passed below the fingers the latter are again moved in by their springs and act as strippers to remove the formed box from the former t'. The box or guide is of suflicient length to contain a number of boxes so that between its entrance to the guide and its final discharge sufficient time Willn have elapsed to permit the thorough drying of the paste.
Adapted to a guiding-platform at the base of the machine is a delivery-box @/,from the opposite side of which extend arms y secured at their outer ends to chains wz passing over guiding-pulleys w3 and carrying at their free ends counterbalance-weights 104, which normally tend to retain the deliverybox in position immediately beneath the dischargeunouth of the guide r. rlhe rear end of the delivery-box is secured to chains w', which extend to drums cgsecured to the shaft t and passing part-ly around said drumsin the same direction as that in which the chain g passes around the drum c. The shaft t is also provided with a drum c', froinwhich extends a chain w to a pedal Z, so arranged With respect to the various drums c c2 that on the depression of the pedal the shaft and all its drums will be revolved, causing the chain g to be partially wound upon its drum u and raising the shaft CZ and the formert' to the position illustrated in Fig. 2, While the chains wV are also partially Wound upon their drums c2 and the delivery-box 'y is moved from its normal position beneath the guide r, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, a slight distance to the rear, as shown by full lines in said figure, and delivering one or more of the formed boxes. Upon the release of this pedal the counterbalance-Weights U14, acting upon the chains 1.02, will again draw the delivery-box back to its normal position, and the Weight of the former 'L' and its shaft OZ will cause the latter to de- Scend and force the completed box betfween the squeezing-rollers p and into the guide r.
The proper position of the former t' with respect to the squeezing-rollers and the guide is determined by the guiding-plates c', carried at the upper portion of the frame c, and to which is adapted a guiding-pin e2, which, during the turning of the shaft and former, is normally above the mouth 0f such guides, the latter being gradually inclined toward each other, so that the pin c2 will be caughtby the guides as the shaft cZ descends, and before the entrance of the former t' between the pressing-rolls the shaft will have been turned axially until the former assumes the proper position.
During the turning of the former and the placing of the blank against the paste-covered strip of paper or the covering of a blank by a pasted strip the former may be held up in the position shown in Fig. 2 by means of alocking-catch u', adapted to extend over the treadle Z, and under the control of an operating-lever it, the catch being preferably acted upon by a spring u2, as shown in Fig. 7, so that it will automatically engage with the treadle each time the latter is depressed.
The mechanism for severing from the pasted strip a section of sufficient length for the completion of the box is more clearly illustrated in Figsland 5. This mechanistncomprises a frame Zt, from which projects an arm Zt', adjustably secured by a screw k2 in a box K', depending from a stanchion K2, which latter is adapted to an orifice in a lug 7a3 projecting from the fratrie c, the adjustment of the frame Zt being for the purpose of enabling the operator to adjust the position of the cutting-knives in accordance with the size and character of the box being manufactured. Pivoted centrally at Z3, within the frame or casing Zt, are two arms Z, one of which carries a cutting-knife Z, and to the opposite arm isv secured a block Z2, of wood, lead, or the like, so arranged as to form a cutting-base for the knife Z. The upper ends of the levers Z, which project beyond the pivot-point, are connected bylinks Z4 to a rod or spindle m,guided within the upper portion of the frame 7c and connected at its upper end to a lever M, pivoted at n to the stanchion K2 and connected at its extreme outer end to a treadle o through the medium of a connecting-rod o, having a yielding or spring-like central section which will yield when the cutting-edge of the blade Z is tightly pressed against the.
block Z2, and thus avoid injury to the blade. In order to normally keep the arms Zapartin readiness for action, a tension-spring m is located within an offset in frame 7c. and is connected at one end to the frame and at the opposite end to the lever M, so as to normally depress the rod or spindle m and keep the arms Zapart.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-,is
1. The combination of the former, a shaft carrying the same, pressing rolls between IIO IZO
which such former is adapted to be passed, a guiding box comprising a series of angular strips, yielding connections between such strips, and stripping ingers provided at or at about the upper end of said guide box, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the former, an axially movable and rotatable shaft carrying the same, a laterally projecting guiding pin carried by such shaft, guideways carried by the frame and to which such pin is adapted, pressing rolls between which such former is adapted to pass and a guiding box located below said pressing rollers, substantially as specified.
3. The combination of the former, a shaft carrying the same, a guiding box having outwardly movable walls into which such former `is adapted to be forced and laterally yielding stripping fingers carried by the movable walls atthe upper end of such guide box, substantially as specified.
4L. The combination of the former, a rotatable shaft carrying the same, devices for raissupporting frame, bearings` provided in the frame for the reception of said shaft, a guiding pin secured to the shaft and guideways provided on the frame and adapted to act upon the said guiding pin, substantially as specified.
G. The combination with the box forming mechanism, of the guide, r, a delivery box,y, located beneath such guide and adapted to be moved toward the rear of the machine each time a completed boxis forced from the guide, r, into said delivery box substantially as speci'- fied. ,i
7. The combination of the former a carrying shaft therefor, a chain, g, having one end secured to such former carrying shaft and at its opposite end secured to a drum, e, a shaft carrying said drum, drums, uon such shaft, a delivery box or slidefy, chains, w', extending from said delivery7 box to the drums, e?, an operating drum, fu, secured to such shaft, a treadle, Z, and a chain, w, extending from said treadle to the operating drum, substantially as specified.
8. The combination of the former a carrying shaft therefor, a chain, g, having one end secured to such former carrying shaft and at its opposite end secured to a drum, fu, a shaft carrying said drum, drums, v2, on said shaft, a delivery box or slide, y, chains, w', extending from said delivery box to the drums, 0:2, counterbalance weights, 104, chains connecting such counterbalance weights to the delivery box, an operating drum, c', secured to the shaft, a treadle, Z, and a chain, w, eX- tending from `said treadle to the operating drum, substantially as specified.
9. In combination with the former and its operating devices, a guide box comprising a series of corner sections, r, lugs, r2, formed on such sections, holding bolts, r', extending through suchlugs and compression springs adapted to said bolts, substantially as specified.
10. A cutting device comprising a supportw ing frame, levers pivoted thereto and carrying at their free ends cutting mechanism, a spindle as m, guided by said frame, links as Z4, connecting said levers to the spindle, and a treadle operatively connected to said spindle, substantially as specified.
11. The combination of the frame, k, levers, Z, pivoted thereto, a cutting blade, Z, carried by one of said levers, a cutting block, Z2, carried` by its fellow, a spindle as m, links, Z, connecting the levers to said spindle, a pivoted lever, M, connected at one end to said spindle and at its opposite end being operatively connected to a treadle, substantially as specified.

The combination of the frame, 7c, levers, Z, pivoted thereto, a cutting knife, Z', carried by one of said levers, a cutting block, Z2, carried by its fellow, a spindle, m, links connecting said spindle to the levers, an operated lever as M, pivoted to said spindle and a spring extending from the xed frame to the lever, M,iand normally tending to separate the levers, Z, substantially as specified.
