Application February 21, 1933, Serial No. 657,907 T RenewedJune 26, 1934 1 Qlaim. (01. 12-103) The invention relates to a clamping device for heels of womens footwear and more particularly to a heel protector.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, wherein a footwear artificer will be able to have the heel of women's footwear clamped and protected during the application of a heel plate or rubber heel lift so as to eliminate any liability of the heel of the footwear becoming split during th application of such plate or lift.

Another object of the invention is the prov1- sion of a device of this character, wherein the construction thereof is such as to permit adjustment thereof, whereby it will fit varying sizes of womens footwear so as to enable the heel thereof to be clamped during the mounting of a rubber lift or a heel plate to the said heel of the footwear and avoiding the splitting of the heel proper during this service.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, wherein the construction thereof is novel in form, it being suscpetible of various applications, namely, when footwear has a last therein or without containing the last and in its use will firmly clamp and protect the heel of the footwear when repairs are made to the heel.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is extremely simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efiicient in its purposes, strong, durable, readily and easily adjusted, convenient of application and removal to and from the footwear, and inexpensive to manufacture.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be-hereinafter more fully described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which disclose the preferred embodiment of the invention, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.

Referring to the drawings in detail, particularly Figures 1 to 6 thereof, A designates generally a womans shoe having as usual the high or spike heel B, and this shoe is merely shown to illusstrate the application thereto of the device constituting the present invention and hereinafter fully described.

The device comprises a heel clamp including a pair of jaws 10, these being outwardly curved correspondingly to the external shape of the heel B and such jaws 10 are swingingly joined together through the medium of a pivot 11, the pivoted portions of said jaws being countersunk or recessed as at 12 for accommodating a spring 13 coiled about the pivot 11 for the tensioning of the jaws so that the same will swing apart or in open position. One of the jaws 10 has swingingly connected thereby by a pivot 14 a hasp or latching bar 15, the same being slotted at 16 to accommodate the free end of the other jaw 10 which carries a notched lip 17 with which is engageable a set screw 18 threaded in said hasp or latching bar 15 so that the jaws 10 can be firmly and adjustably clamped upon the heel B to embrace the same so as to avoid the splitting thereof when applying a heel lift, heel plate or rubber tread thereto.

The clamp having the jaws 10 has connected thereto a retaining frame including a series of straps, each having the sections 19 and 20, these being separable from each other and adjustably joined by retaining lugs 21 selectively fitted in holes 22, the latter being in the sections 20, while the lugs 21 are onthe sections 19. The sections 19 are riveted or otherwise made fast to the jaws 10 of the clamp. The sections 20 are joined to a plate 23 and said sections are doubled on themselves to fit over the body of the shoe A whereby the plate 23 of the frame will press against the insole at the heel end of said shoe and in this fashion the clamp will be retained in proper adjusted position on the heel B. Furthermore, the heel in its entirety will be clamped to the body of the shoe as will be clearly apparent from Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings.

In Figure '7 of the drawings there is shown a slight modification, wherein the sections 24 of the frame of the device, which sections correspond to the sections 20, are connected to a disk 25 common to all of the sections 24 of said frame, the connection being had by a rivet 26. The sections 24 are bent to overhang a last C when within the shoe A as is clearly disclosed in Figure 7 of the drawings. 7

The jaws 10 and the ha'sp or latchingbar 15 at the faces confronting the heel are provided with pads or linings 2'7 so as, to avoid the marring of the heelB' at the exposed faces thereof. 1

In-Figures 8 and 9 of the drawings there is shown a further modificationof the device; where'- in the jaws 27 are outwardly bulged and swingingly connected'by a pivot 28. The outwardly bulgedformation corresponds with the external shape of the heel B. These jaws 2'7" are formed with extensions 29 joined with the inbent portions 30 of said jaws, while pivoted to one of the extensions 29 is a latching yoke 31, it swinging on a pivot 32 and accommodating the other extension 29 therein for engagement of a set screw 33 threaded in said latching yoke 31, the screw being seated in a notch 34 when engaged with the extension 29 next thereto. Thus it will be seen from Figure 8 of the drawings that the jaws 2'7 embrace the heel B and will be adjustably clamped by the latching yoke 31 to the heel.

What is claimed is:

A 'device of the character described comprising pivotally connected opposed clamping jaws, means for adjustably securing the jaws about the heel of a shoe, linings on said jaws for contact with the heel to prevent marring thereof, an adjustable frame carrying the jaws and engageable about a body of the shoe, and means carried by the jaws forv tensioning the same and. spreading said jawsrwhen releasedby said means,
