The present invention relates to shoe heel clamps and has main application in connection with wooden heels, in womens shoes, the object being to retain the wooden heel while i the leather layer is nailed thereto to prevent splitting of the wooden heel during the process of driving nails therein.
A further object of the present invention is the provision of a clamp the jaws of which 'ic may snugly lit the periphery of the heel and squeeze the same while nails are driven for attaching a layer of leather to the heel for preventing splitting of the heel during the process of driving nails thereto.
'15 Another object of the present invention is the provision of a clamp of the character indicated which may be constructed of comparatively few parts, which may be easily assembled or replaced.

Referring detail to the present drawing the invention includes a pair of L-shaped frame members 10, pivotally hinged by their leg portions by pin 11, in a manner whereby said L-shaped frame members 10 effect a U- shaped frame, as clearly seen on Fig. 1.
The side portions of each of said L-shaped member 1G, adjacent the free end thereof is provided with apertures 12, which remain in substantial alinement in both of said sides.

Said apertures are adapted to receive bolt 13, which, at one of its ends, is provided with head 14 while the other end is threaded as at 15 forV receiving thereon wing nut 16. Said apertures 12 are slightly larger than the periphery of bolt 13 for permitting play of said bolt 13 within said apertures 12 during the angular shiftine movement of the two L- shaped frame members 10 upon pivot 11 at the time pressure is exerted upon sides of said L-shaped members 10 by screwing on the wing nut 16 upon bolt 13. Apertures 12 adjacent head 14 may preferably be square to accommodate therewithin square base 1T of bolt 13, by virtue of which arrangement bolt 13 may remain stationary at the time wing nut 16 is operated.
At the free termination of each side of L- shaped frame member 10, and on the inner face thereof, bores 18 are made for the purpose which will be hereinafter described The invention further includes an oblong strip 19 of springy resilient nature made of metal similar to that employed in clockspring. Said strip 19 is adapted to assume a U-shaped formation while the same is in an operative position within frame members 10 as clearly seen on Fig. 1. Rigidly mounted by soldering or by any other suitable means atxed to said spring strip 19, at the ends and upon the same face thereof are clamping jaw members 20, which at their free faces are suitably grooved as at 21 in order that they may snugly fit the peripheral side of the heel 22 when the device is in an operative position thereupon as clearly seen on Fig. 1.

From the hereinabove description it will be seen that the clamp is adjustable to suit various Widths of heels. By virtue of the fact that strip 19 is of resilient nature easy shitting oit' clamping jaw members 20 on longitudinal plane with the free ends o t L- shaped clamping members 10 is obtained. The swivel arrangement of said clamping jaw members 20 by virtue of bores 18 and pins E24, Jfacilitates ready adjustment of said clamping aw members 2O to proper posi-tion With respect to the adjacent portions of the periphery of the heel at the time pressure is .exerted at L-shaped frame members 10 by means of bolt 13 and wing Vnut 1X6. Further, by virtue ot swivel arrangement or' pins 24 at bores 18, the lshitting movement of .clamping jaw members 20, whereby they seek most natural position with relationto the periphery of the shoe heel at the time pressure is exerted at L-shaped frame members 10, by operating wing nut 16, is facilitated.
From the hereinabove description of the construction and operation of the device it will be seen that when the device is in an operative position upon shoe heel 2 2, great amount ofpressure may be had thereupon by said clamping jaw members, and While this pressure is continued, leather layer 25 may then be safely nailed to the wooden portion of the shoe heel without fear that the heel may split as is a frequent occurrence Without the aid of suitable clamping device.
Due to the tendency of strip 1 9 to open and to assume normal position shown en Fig. 3 on outward angular shifting of the L-shaped frame members 10, on unscrewing oi the wing nut 16, pins 24 continue to remain Within their respective bores 18, they being forced to remain in that position by virtue of the resiliency of strip 19 and by virtue of its tendency to spread| out in order to assume normal position shown on Fig. 3, It is also observed that diameters of bores 18 are larger than the diameters of pins 2a permitting swivelling of said pins 24C to considerable degree in order that clamping members 20 may fit various sizes of shoe heels, and further that they may quickly iind the most suited position with respect to the heel during the process of tightening of tlie clamp by screwing on Wing nut 416.
While there is described herein a preferred embodiment of the present invention., it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without depart-- ing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim as new is:
1. A device of the class described comthrough saidV frame members, a nut upon said bolt for maintaining said frame members in a relative angular adjustment, and a spring device connecting said clamping members for maintaining the same in operative position with respect to said frame members.
2. A device of the class described comprising a pair of L-sh-aped'framel members pivotally connected at their leg portions to defineV a substantially U-shaped frame, the tree ends vor" said frame members being in substantially parallel relation, clamping members swivelingly positioned upon the inner opposed faces of the free ends of said frame members, means for angularly adjusting said frame members, and yield-able means Vior maintaining said clamping members in operative position with respect to said frame members, said last namedmeans permitting shifting of ysaid clamping members on operation of said first named means in all directions other than transverse with respect to the free ends of said frame members,
8. A device of the class described comprising a pair ot iframe members pivotally connected by one of their ends, clamping members swivelingly positioned upon the other ends of said frame members, means for pivotally adjusting said frame members, and yiel'dable means for maintaining said clamping members in operative position with respect to said frame members, said last named means permitting shifting of said clamping members on operation of said first named means in all ldirections other than transverse with respect to said frame members.
