Application February 2c, 1931, Serial No. 51am Renewed June 5, 1934,
5 Claims. (Cl. z-m) My invention relates to new and useful improvements in coat shirts and the like.
An important object of my invention is the provision of a shirt for dress, sport, or lounging purposes which may, with comfort, be worn over suspenders rendering the same completely invisible from the outside.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a shirt of the'above character having means for detachably securing the suspenders to the shirt body and for detachably securing the shirt to the trousers of the wearer to maintain the shirt and trousers in their proper place and position with respect to each other.
A still further object ofmy invention is the provision of a shirt or the above character which eliminates the disagreeable feature of the shirt and trousers becoming separated, prevents gathering of the shirt about the waist band of the wearer, and which, by reason of the suspenders being concealed, always presents a neat and attractive appearance.
Other objects will be in part obvious from the annexed drawing and in part indicated from the following analysis of the invention, which referonce is made to the accompanying drawing illustrating an embodiment of my idea.
In the drawing- Fig. 1 represents a front view of my shirt;
Fig. 2 represents a back view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a front view of the detachable band adapted to be worn about the waist of the shirt;
Fig. 4 is a top view of the lower shoulder yoke pendant ends for supporting the trousers;
Fig. 5 is an auxiliary suspender end adapted to connect one of the pendant ends of the under yoke to the trousers and,
Fig. 6 is a modification of Fig. 5.
The form of shirt shown in the drawing and in which my invention may be satisfactorily embodied consists of the body portion 10 to which the sleeves ll and collar band 12 are permanently attached. The shirt shown and hereinafter described is of the coat type opening at the front from top to bottom, and provided with the customary button closures 13 whereby it may be buttoned about the body of the wearer.
Permanently attached to the upper portion of the shirt body between the opposite sides of the collar band 12 and the uppermost point at which the sleeves are joined to the body, are upper shoulder yokes 14. These yokes are preferably separate strips of cloth or the like sewed to the inside of the shirt body.
Secured at one end to the respective upper shoulder yokes are under yokes 15. The under yokes 15 are preferably tapered strips or ribbon of cloth as best shown in Fig. 4 and are secured at the wide end by stitching to the upper yoke at 16 adjacent the point where the sleeves ar joined to the shirt body. A button 1'7 is secured to the tapered portion of each of the under yokes l5 and are adapted to detachably engage with corresponding button holes provided in the upper shoulder yokes on each side of the collar band 12.
Referring to Fig. 4 the under yokes 15 have a strip of cloth or elastic material 19 permanently secured thereto, approximately mid-way between the end 16, which is attached to the upper yoke adjacent the sleeves, and the end carrying button 15 17.. The strip 19 is securedto the under yoke in. any well known manner and has pendant ends 20 and 21 extending downwardly therefrom at the front and back of the wearer. The lower ends of the pendants 20 and 21 are provided with a series of button-holes 22 which may adjustably engage direct with buttons at the waist-band of the trousers to support the same, or may engage with corresponding means such as buckles 23 secured to auxiliary suspender ends 24 and 25, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, respectively. The auxiliary suspender ends may be of elastic material and, as shown in Fig. 6, the suspender ends 25, which are intended to be worn at the back of the wearer, are provided with button holes 26 which are intended to engagethe corresponding buttons. on the waist-band of the trousers. The auxiliary suspender ends 24, which are worn at the front, are provided with conventional tabs 27 having button holes '28 to engage with corresponding buttons at the .front of the waist band of the trousers to support the same.
The shirt body 10 is tapered or narrowed at the waist line 29 to conform to the outside measurement of the waist band of the trousers and is provided at the side, front, and back with tabs'30. These tabs are small pieces of fabric or leather secured at the upper edge to the inside of the waist band 29 of the shirt and have button holes adapted to engage with corresponding buttons 31 secured to the inside of the waist band of the trousers. The waist band 29 of the shirt is adapted to be worn on the outside of the trousers, and the tabs or flaps on the inside to retain the shirt and trousers in their proper place and position with respect to each other.
Referring to Fig. 3, the numeral 32 indicates a belt or band which is intended to be worn about the waist band of the shirt. The waist band 32 may be of fabric or leather, or an elastic material may be used if desired. It is also contemplated that the belt or band may be made of different colors to add to the attractiveness thereof. The ends of the belt or band 32 may be joined by a buckle or the like 33. Snap fasteners 34 are secured to the inside of the belt 32 and are adapted .to engage with corresponding fastener studs 35 on the outside of the shirt waist band so that the belt may be detachably secured thereto.
It will be seen from the foregoing description and the accompanying drawing that my invention accomplishes all of the objects above enumerated and, further,- provides a shirt which, when properly worn, presents a neat attractive appearance, and which may be wornwith or without a coat, the unsightly suspenders being at all times concealed beneath the shirt.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A coat shirt for dress, lounging and sport purposes adapted to be worn over the top of suspenders to permit the suspenders to be freely operated or attached and detached from the trousers as desired,-said shirt being open in front from top to bottom, a waist band adapted to open with the shirt and having upon its inside lower edge at the waist line and on the inside of said waist-band tabs adapted to engage the inside of the top oi the waist band of trousers, thereby to permit the bottom of the shirt to be worn outside of the trouser waist band.
2. A coat shirt having underneath the body of the shirt over each shoulder double shoulder yokes, the under yoke having permanently attached thereon suspender strap ends extending downwardly back and front to engage with and support the trousers, said under yoke serving to relieve the strain or pull of the suspender ends from the shirt body over the shoulders.
3. A shirt open in front from top to bottom having double shoulder yokes over and upon each shoulder, the under yoke underneath the shirt body being broad and wide and is of a swinging character, one end of this being permanently attached to the shirt body and upper yoke at the outer edge of the shoulder, the other end being free and having detachable engaging and fastening means thereon to engage with like means to the upper shoulder yoke and shirt body near the collar band 01 the shirt and beneath the shirt body.
4. A coat shirt to be worn with suspenders and trousers, said suspenders being invisible underneath the body of the shirt, the lower edge of the shirt body being narrowed to conform to the outside waist band measurement of the trousers over which it is adapted to be worn, double shoulder yokes permanently secured underneath the bod oi the shirt and over each shoulder, each lower yoke being attached at one end to the adjacent upper shoulder yoke and the shirt body, the other end having means cooperating with corresponding means secured to the upper yoke near the neck collar band to which it is adapted to be detachably secured to form a passage way through which said suspenders extend, a plurality oi individual tabs disposed about the waist line on the inside of said shirt body and permanently attached thereto, said tabs having detachable engaging means coacting with corresponding means secured to the inside oi said trousers at the waist line to retain said trousers and shirt body in fixed position relative to each other, and a band of different colors permanently attached to the outside of said shirt body at the waist line.
5. A coat shirt terminating at the waist line and having its lower edgev at the waist line narrowed to conform to the outside measurements of the trouser waist band, a band upon the outside lower edge 0! the shirt body, said band having upon its inner side invisible tabs with detachable engaging and fastening means thereon to engage with like coacting means on the inside at the top of the trouser waist band to keep the shirt and trousers each in their respective place and position, the said band being of varying colors and extending all around the bottom of the shirt and permanently attached to the bottom of the shirt body.
