The main object of this invention is to provide a window which is so constructed as to enable the builder or user thereof to remove the sashes in a quick and ready manner. Another 5 object of the invention is to provide a window which has the conventional type of counterweights from which the sashes are suspended and is so constructed that said sashes may be entirely removed from the frame so that replacement or cleaning of the exterior surfaces of the window face may be facilitated.
The above and other objects will become apparent in the description below in which characters of reference refer to like named parts in the drawing. 7
Referring briefly to the drawing, Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a half of a window frame showing the sashes mounted in operative position therein.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal, sectional, elevational view through the window frame and sashes, showing the latter in partly removed position, said sashes being in a position suitable for cleaning of the exterior surfaces of the window panes.
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view through the lower portion of the window frames showing the method of attaching the guard strips in place on the frame.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 10 indicates the outer boards which lie flat upon the exterior surface of the wall of a building construction. The window frame may be standard type and is provided with rectangular box pieces 11 whose tongues 12 upon the edges of the box structure, are mitred into channels of the side boards 10 and 13, the latter framing the window on the inside of the building. The said pieces 11A of the box structure are provided with pulleys 14 at their upper ends, about which are trained ropes 15 and 16. The sides 11A of the box structure are divided into passageways 1'7 and 18; an upper window 21 and a lower window 22 respectively are slidable. Aligned with the intermediate strip 19 which extends for the upper half of the window, is a pivoted intermediate strip 23; this pivoted strip extends to the extreme lower end of the window frame and rests upon the sill 24. The inside wider strip 20 is similarly provided with an aligned, pivoted strip 25 which also rests upon the sill of the frame.
The window frame and sashes are of standard construction with the exception of the guard strips 20 and 19. These stated guard strips are rigidly mounted upon the window frame in their desired positions but instead of extending for the entire length of the window opening, extending only approximately half way from the upper end to a point intermediate the height of the frame. The aligned guard strips 23 and 25 are pivoted at their upper ends upon the window frame and are constructed with a view to rotating these stated guard strips outwardly into a room or chamber. By displacing these pivoted guard strips 23 and 25 angularly, either individually or in combination, the upper sash 21 and lower sash 22 may be selectively or independently removed in their entirety from the frame or these sashes may be independently rotated to a position such as indicated in Fig. 2 where cleaning of the exterior surfaces of the window face is facilitated.
It is to be noted that certain changes in form and construction may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
We claim:
In a window device, a rectangular open frame, an upper and lower window sash movable lengthwise in said frame, ropes suspending said sashes, a member mounted rigidly on one side of the said sash on said window frame, said member forming a guide for one sash, an intermediate strip rigidly mounted between said sashes, said intermediate strip being mounted on the upper half of said window frame, independent intermediate strip arranged end to end with respect to the first named intermediate strip, said second strip being rotatably secured to said window frame at its upper end, wider strip mounted rigidly on the side of said frame on the upper half portion of the latter, a second member similar to the wider strip being arranged end to end with said wider strip and being pivotally secured to said window frame at its upper end, said swingable intermediate strip, said pivoted wider strip being adapted to be swung inwardly when said sashes are to be reversed.
