asses.
Specification'of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 22, 1922.-
Application filed Itoveinber 30, 1921. Serial No. 518,756.
To all whom; it may concern:
Be it known that l, HARRY E. CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State ofNew York, have invented a certain new and useful improvement in Window Frames and Sashes, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to window-frames.
and sashes of the type shown, for example, in U. S. Letters Patent No. 1,273,453, granted to me July-23, 1918, and consists in the,
construction of the window-frame whereby the sashes may be easily removed therefrom for packing for transportation, or for repair or replacement. The frame and sashes, as here shown, may be of wood or wood cov ered with sheet metal. The lateral extension plates on the sashes which enter the hollow jambs are here shown of metal and cooperate with fixed. metal walls or parti tions within said jambs.
In the accompanying draWing- Fig. 1 is a transverse horizontal section of the sashes and frame. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectionon the line 2, 2.,ofFig. 1. Fig. 3 is an elevation of a portion of the middle section 11,-sh0wing the joint between the parts of said section. t
Similarnumbers of reference indicate like parts.
3 and 4 are hollow jambs ofwood; As these jambs are alike, a description of one applies to both. The front wall 5, the rear wall-6 and the outer side wall 7 are of'planking framed together. The inner wall is composed of four vertical sections, namely, an inner section '8 secured to rear wall 6 by screw 9, an outer section 10 which is rabbeted to receive the end of the front wall 5 and which protrudes outwardly beyondsaid front wall, and two middle sections 11 and 12. The middle section 11 is carried by a fixed metal wall 13 within the jamb. Said Wall 13 is secured between the front wall 5 and outer section 10 by the screw 14 which unites said wall and section and passes through said fixed wall 13. The middle section 11 is secured to said fixed wall 13 by countersunk screws 15 and is made in two parts 16,17 disposed one above the other, as shown in Fig. 3, the joint 18 between them being preferably diagonal. The middle section 12 is secured by screws 19 to the middle 1". section 11 and has its inner surface flush with the adjacent inner snrtaces of sections wit, an inner section,
8 and 10. Vertical gaps are left between the edges of section 12 and the adjacent edges of sections 8 and 10, through which pass metal extension plates 20 and 21 which are secured on the verticalside rails of the sliding sashes 22, 23. These extension plates at their free edges move over the vertical surfaces of the fixed walls' 13 when the sashes are raised or lowered. In Fig. 1, 23 is the upper and 22 the lower sliding sash, each carrying, as usual, a glass pane 24.
To remove the lower sash 22, I simply re.- move the screws 9, and so release the jamb wall sectlons 8. The sash is then moved in wardl into the room. To cause its extension p ates 20 to pass the rear jamb walls 6, t is alsomoved laterally in its own plane into first one hollow jamb and then into the .other, so that the extension plate first on one side of the sash and then on the other successively clear said walls.
-To remove the upper sash 23 (the lower sash having been removed) the middle section 12 and the upper portion 16 of section 11 are taken out, when said sash can be moved inwardly into the room and caused to clear the rear jamb walls 6 in the same way as already set forth in connection with lower sash 22. I claim:
1. In combination, two sliding sashes having lateral extension plates on their side rails,'a'frame havin hollow jambs, each jamb comprising a xed wall, wherewith said extension plates cooperate, and an inner wall formed in four removable sections, to
two middle sections, one of said middle sections being secured to said fixed wall and the other of said middle sections being secured to said first-named middle section;
there being gaps for'the reception of said extension plates between the edges of said last-named middle section and the edges &of the inner and outer sections adjacent thereto.
2. The combination of claim 1, further including said o ne middle section made in separate y removable parts disposed one above the other. i
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
